Unlit by mjgood

So, I'm going to be upfront before anybody attempts to evaluate our work...

We mostly failed this jam.

In the state that it's in right now, the menu doesn't work properly, most of the artwork hasn't made it in, and it's just not fun. Sometimes these things happen.

However, I wanted to post this anyway, as a few of us have a lot of interest in building this concept out more. There's an idea here that could create some really fun and unique gameplay, and if we get it working right, it'll be fun to pull this up so we can laugh at ourselves for the stupid weekend we had here in August.

Newer, extremely buggier version: https://github.com/mjgood/ld42/blob/master/unlitld42.zip Older, more stable version (way less features, but more playable): https://github.com/mjgood/ld42/blob/master/unlitdemonstration.zip

That said, here's what we're trying to do.

Unlit

The Void is a very large, very empty space. It is very dark, there is a lot of nothing inside of it, and not much else. Oh, except the Unlit Bugs.

What, you've never seen a Unlit Bug before? Well let me tell you about them! They're pretty peaceful, they like sticking to themselves, they do. Most folks never seen them, ‘Course, most folks never been to The Void neither... they don’t even think it’s possible critters can live in The Void, but they can.

How you make a Unlit Bug mad at you? Well, that’s not easy, given they’re in The Void and all, and most folks don’t know how to even get there, but you can. Oohh, you can. See, Unlits live in The Void on purpose... They like how much nuthin’ is in there! They cozy right on up to it, they do. Best way to make one hoppin’ mad? Take away it’s nothing... Oohh they get real riled up then!

Sure, might not look like it right at first... You put somethin’ in The Void, first thing they do is get real scared of it... They run away, they do. But after a little while they’ll be back. And once they’re back, they’ll be hoppin’ mad you bothered ‘um too, so ya gotta keep moving! That’s the key if you ever go to The Void... Don’t ya dare ever, ever run out of space. Second you run out of space is the second them Unlits got ya.

‘Course, don’t know why you asked. The Void is a strange place, not sure why anybody’d wanna go there anyway...

The music and sfx (footsteps were worth it?) created good atmosphere...I felt something. The silence before the music kicks in is great. I had an enjoyable ahha moment when I figured out that the little blocks I was shooting out were actually somehow generating terrain (of course I didn't read the directions on this page before playing ). The terrain gun bullets could use a little feedback when they are about to create stuff and maybe create less/more directed?

I definitely think I'm missing some interactions with stuff in the environment and the game part of the game if there is any other than exploration. However, the performance/controls/falling to void and needing to relaunch kept me from poking at it more.

Windowed mode is basically not playable since there is no mouselock (I tried that first), but fullscreen works enough.

Despite the huge number of issues with the game, the aesthetic is really cool. If you are going to continue developing this, I'd encourage you to further pursue that white-black look. Make the shadows darker, maybe, and play around with some ambient occlusion.

@crefossus @iamsodarncool thanks for the feedback! :D Glad to hear we're on a good track with the atmosphere / feel... sometimes I get into a rhythm as I'm working on something and think it's way cooler than it actually is in the heat of the moment lol. The white tiles are actually not intentional (that's what the default Unity cube looks like with no texture mesh), but I can picture what you're getting at... we'll have to tinker with that some.

No, it wasn't just you missing interactions with the environment... there's a lot of stuff we want to put in to this yet. I'll post an update once we have something more playable created :)

Thanks for pointing out the mouselook issue! I'll have to check to see what's going on there
