Samband by Ava Skoog

[raw]
made by Ava Skoog for Ludum Dare 59 (JAM)

The ldjam.com resolution is a bit weird, so I recommend itch.io (also has native builds, and fullscreen).

ℹ️ About

Tune in with the slider to find something in the noise. Then respond using the five buttons.

🔈 Sound

Although pretty much everything is also indicated visually, this is very much a sound-based game. Headphones recommended!

In fact, it should work as an audio-only game as long as you're able to tell the tones apart. An extra challenge, perhaps?

🚥 Flashing lights

It's not super intense, but adding a warning here to be safe. There's also moving grain on top of everything.

📱 Mobile support-ish

This may or may not work in a mobile browser using touch on itch.io, since it's web-based and mouse-only. The fullscreen button didn't work for me however.

🕹 Controls

You can use mouse/touch only. You can also use number keys for the buttons, and arrow keys or scroll for the slider.

Loved it! Great entry. But for some reason I found it so hard. In the end I had to write down the colours and their numbers and put it on screen next to the game. I think I'm getting old and my brain is broken. I finished it though. Love the skeuomorphic design, in fact I love skeuomorphic apps in general. The audio works great and is actually integral to the game. Not sure what else to say other than you smashed it! :8ball:

Awesome little puzzle game and quite challenging. Love the aesthetics of the olden days radio equipment.
I had to write down the buttons BUT that's what always happens to my adhd brain with puzzles! < 3
it's such a lovely, claustrophobic, lonely mood, thank you for making it!

It took me an embarrassing long time to start and figure this out! But I finally got it. I really liked the atmosphere in the sound design. Once I finally figured stuff out you got me a bit scared in the end with the sequence being that long, that I would mix something up and have to restart!

I was looking forward to playing something horrory from you, remembering previous entries, and so I am really happy to see this :D I love the sound-based horror and the creepy atmosphere coming from it and the visuals, the concept is really cool! And the sound is great.

However, I've played around with the radio but for the life of me I can not understand what am I supposed to do. The red button lights up so I pressed it several times before realizing I am technically able to press others too when it does. But that didn't change anything - I was only hearing static each time ;_; Now I am looking through the comments about people writing down stuff but I am at the stage where I have no clue WHY I even would do that and WHAT would I write :'D

I see there is a video in one of the comments but I really would love to try it myself, so any clue/ walkthrough would be appreciated :')

Thanks to everyone who played so far! Really nice to see familiar faces once again—will be playing and rating yours soon too :)

I was kinda hoping you'd write stuff down and make the game as analogue as I tried to make it look, so I'm glad it happened!

@local-minimum: Thanks for the video! I did intend for "figuring out what the objective even is" to be a part of the game, but you might be right that some more feedback like a different pointer would've been good. As for the name, it can have a couple of meanings including *contact*, *connection*, and *correlation*, so I thought it was a nice fit :)

@kanity, hopefully this clue is enough: make sure you really try *every* button in response to the red one, and one of them should do something~

@ava-skoog Thank you!! I got it! x) So the idea is in what "answers" what, now I see what is there to write down. Though I ended up clicking on memory because I had many tries x) Didn't expect such a positive ending at all! :D But the process of getting there was actually super fun. I mean, I feel accomplished after completing it, but I loved the process itself as well. And the buttons feel so satisfying, I just loved clicking on them x) Thank you, it was great ^^ Though I have a sneaky feeling there is another ending (?) because a few times during my tries I got a slight difference in the start of the sequence (yellow OR green lighting up, but now somehow I don't remember which one I've completed XD)

@ava-skoog I think the discovery part went really well in the end, just a little of the UX when first not even knowing when and how to press could have had a little assistance yeah. Also I knew you've been here at Ludum for a great while but I didn't know you were the shared 6th-most jammer of all time

This was one of your hardest games yet, at least for people like me. I really had to rack my brains for this one. I'm not good at figuring out puzzles like this. Still, I persevered. After making a bit of progress with the first 4-5 codes, I kept getting stumped. I then used trial and error and finally slogged my way through. It was a good feeling to finally hear the female voice and then the song—quite a relief. I was beginning to lose confidence in myself. I probably would have given up if it had been someone else's game.

As far as graphics and sound effects go, they are truly amazing. I had the impression that I was working with some old-fashioned electronic device for communicating with ghosts. In terms of imagination, this game is top-notch. A good mental exercise: hopefully this game will turn us into better thinkers. Lord knows, I have a long way to go in that respect.

Still working on *Ảo*? Or any other projects, for that matter? Just curious.

Presenting it in the form of speakers and transmitting signals through sound - I love this setup! I think the idea is great and it's also a bit challenging - a good game

Thanks for playing to you as well! Some interesting trivia there 👀

Glad it helped with the thinking! Always working on Ảo on and off, yeah. Mostly writing lately. But nothing to show yet.

enjoyed the unique atmospheric vibe, not knowing what to expect was fun. art wise love the texture of the light and movement, very satisfying

A very good game. Given how easy it is for a Ludum dare game to be unclear about what you're supposed to do, I'm impressed you pulled it off when doing that deliberately.

I played the game during Ludum Dare, and I realize it’s broken here. The version on itch.io is surely more functional. So, I won't judge it based on that—but given three days, you probably could have created something more substantial than just a light-bulb memorization game.

Brilliant game, and great interpretation of the theme. Once I started writing down the answers I was able to keep my streak going, but near the end I didn't need it as muscle memory started kicking in. Completing this one was super satisfying too, Loved the ending. Fantastic job! Well done.

Loved the concept, but it was frustrating for me sometimes when the sequence changed because I just learned it by heart lol !

Really fun game with a nice concept :)

A really strong interpretation of the theme. I also really liked the overall mood of the game and how well everything felt integrated together. It’s simple but elegant ,and honestly, not every game needs to be overly complex or packed with mechanics to work well, and this is a great example of that.

Sometimes a more focused and polished experience ends up being far more effective, and I think this game achieves exactly that.

Great work! :radio:

Took me a while to actually figure out what my goal was, but now here I am jamming to the ending song :joy: Cute little puzzle game!
