SIGNAL:D by FireFish

[raw]
made by FireFish for Ludum Dare 59 (JAM)

⚠️ Attention!!!!!!

  1. Playing this game requires the use of your real-life computer webcam. The core gameplay involves capturing your facial expressions.
  2. We have specially created bilingual subtitles in English and Chinese, which can be toggled in the settings menu. I am not a native English speaker, so please forgive any awkward phrasing in the English text.
  3. Due to Ludum Dare’s website restrictions regarding webcam access, please play the game via the itch.io link at the end of this post. By the way, no download is required

🌌 Game Setting

Welcome to the "Signal :D" project, the most awkward, lowest-budget, yet perhaps most important diplomatic department in the entire galaxy.

You will operate a vintage computer on a space station to remotely control a robot and communicate with alien life. You need to manipulate the robot to interact with the aliens, and when they show emotions, use your own face to make specific expressions. Transmit these pictures to the alien to match each other's mirror neurons. This will increase the calibration level of the interstellar translator until it is fully calibrated.

Throughout the process, a cute but snarky colleague, Vera, will guide you through the employee training and provide hints. In this playthrough, there are a total of three alien lifeforms for you to calibrate.

🎮 HOW TO PLAY?

Follow Vera's instructions to complete the tutorial. At the very beginning of the game, you need to make five corresponding expressions to input basic data into our facial image recognition system. Basically, turn on your webcam, make the expressions, and wait for the progress bar to complete. This process takes about a minute or two.

All subsequent operations only require clicking buttons in the game with your mouse. Entering a specific four-digit code and clicking confirm will make the robot perform a specific action. The specific numerical codes are written on sticky notes attached to the console for you to check at any time.

The monitor in the top right is linked to your real-life webcam. Once you complete the calibration, the corresponding facial emotion recognition will be displayed on the small screen below. When you need to send a picture to an alien, click the "Send" button to transmit it.

Please note that to avoid bugs (yes, it really is quite buggy), the input keys in the game are disabled while Vera is speaking.

💬 A Few Words from the Developer:

  1. This is the second time for us (the designer and programmer) participating in Ludum Dare, and the rest of our teammates are newcomers. It is also our first time making this type of game, so we hope to receive plenty of feedback and suggestions.
  2. We actually made this game to test whether facial emotion recognition technology could be integrated into gameplay. I'm not sure if you guys have played this type of game before, but I'd highly recommend Before Your Eyes—it's a very interesting experience.
  3. Originally, we wanted to create topological dialogue branches for Vera. For example, a scrapped "rewind" feature involved Vera remotely using a memory-erasing device on the alien so we could try again, which would have led to her making more sarcastic remarks during the second interaction. However, due to too many bugs, we had to cut them for now.
  4. We initially planned to have more aliens and a richer variety of actions, but our artists are still in school and the schedule was too tight to finish everything. We might update it later if we get the chance.
  5. Anyway, we hope everyone enjoys Ludum Dare! We really love the atmosphere of this community. Love you all~

🆕 Update Notes

  1. Many players mentioned that the text scrolls too fast. We have added a button that allows you to manually trigger the next line of dialogue, and you can also choose to use the Spacebar to trigger it. You can still scroll up in the dialogue interface to read all the conversation history.
  2. We received a lot of feedback that entering four-digit codes to control the robot is a bit tedious. To preserve the game's flavor, it's hard to remove this feature completely. However, we have added direct keyboard support! You can now use your number keys to input the codes directly and press the Enter key to confirm. We hope this makes the controls feel less clunky. If it still doesn't feel streamlined enough, please let us know! :D

  3. After a failure, Vera will now remind you that you can boot up the backup machine by entering 8080 to try again. This should help prevent players from feeling lost if they fail.

Jesus!PRETTY GOOD!!! I've never played this kind of game on PC, which use face emotion as the main game method. I've only seen this on Playstation or Xbox. Despite the emotion recognize accuracy isn't too high, but ur degree of innovation is very high! The concept of the game is very novel! I can feel the relation between the game and the theme. The whole graphic and interaction design is pretty excellent, too! I really appreciate to your achievement that u can make this surprising progress in about 72 hours! WELL DONE!!!

I played with the webcam and that was so fun! Never played a game like this before. Unfortunately I got only 5/6 green lights before getting all red... The game prompted me to get to try again but I think the game ends there since nothing would happen. The face capturing worked very well in my opinion, I just sometimes wasn't sure what face to make, but that's fine. Very nice game! Somewhat similar to "Who's Lila" with making different faces.

@verttixpertti To restart the game, just re-enter the starting code for the level (8080). We’ve actually updated the game and added some in-game guidance to make this clearer. Thank you so much for your feedback!:D

Haha, very original, I loved making weird faces to the camera (especially at work) xD Putting up codes all the time was a little too much at times though. I appreciate it adding to the overall vibe of the setting, but separate buttons would be quicker and probably more satysfing to use for specific actions and would speed up getting to whats satysfing in game (in my opinion). Still, quite complex, very fun it's a great game! I'm impressed how amazing work people put into this jame :D ![suprise.png](///raw/179/d3/z/72490.png)

I had so much fun playing with the webcam! It’s such a unique experience I’ve never played anything quite like it before. The face tracking worked really well, though I occasionally wasn’t sure which expression to make (but that’s part of the charm!). I did get stuck after hitting 5/6 green lights; the game suggested trying again, but it seemed to end there. Despite that small hiccup, it’s a wonderful game in terms of using facial expressions. Great job!

Where do I even begin! The game was GREAT! I very well believe it's between the games deserving to win. "Welcome to the “Signal :D” project, the most awkward, lowest-budget, yet perhaps most important diplomatic department in the entire galaxy." - You already got me there haha. I've never played a game using face reconginition before, let alone leveraging it to communicate with aliens! It's crazy how you managed to implement such an imaginative- both in technology used and theme- and well-done game in such a little amount of time, congratulations. I also LOVED Vera, sassy queen. I'd love to see a fuller version of this. I also just noticed how the smiley is actually an integral part of the title:D The only critique I have is that I know a few of my friends I'd like to show it to would likely have a bit of trouble keeping up with the dialog speed (though I was okay with it), so I'd suggest perhaps using a button/clicking on the dialog box to advance the dialog at your own pace instead

A very unusual concept.
I liked the visual presentation and the music, but having to constantly perform actions by entering codes can get a bit tiring.

@verttixpertti Thanks so much for playing! We did notice the lack of a prompt after the player fails (yeah, that was definitely an oversight on our part). We've updated the game with a new hint from Vera to remind players to enter 8080 at this point to restart and continue.

Regarding the visual clarity of the art, you are totally right—it is indeed an issue right now. We unfortunately can't optimize it at the moment, but if we decide to release a more complete version later on, we will seriously polish the visual readability to help players better perceive exactly what emotion the alien is feeling :D

Thanks again for your feedback! Hope you have a great time!

@pipetto Thanks so much for playing! We actually had an internal discussion about the best way to control the robot, and ultimately decided to go with this scheme for the sake of the game's atmosphere.

However, player comfort is really important to us, so we just pushed an update that allows you to use the numpad to input and confirm numeric commands. We hope this makes the input process a bit smoother and reduces any discomfort!

Thank you for your feedback and support!

@zoldanka Thank you so much for your review and for sharing our game with your friends!

We definitely noticed the feedback about the dialogue speed, so we just pushed an update that adds a button to manually advance the dialogue. You can also just press the Spacebar to trigger it. We really hope this makes the experience smoother for your friends! We've also made a few other quality-of-life (QoL) updates to improve overall comfort, which you can check out at the very bottom of the game description.

Also, on a personal note, I want to say a huge thank you! Thank you for liking Vera. I'm honestly not the most experienced when it comes to writing narrative scripts, so I put a lot of effort and trial-and-error into shaping her character. Knowing that you like her makes me incredibly happy and gives me so much motivation!

Thanks again for playing, and wishing you all the best!

@oradimi thanks for trying that out, lol! As a game designer, I've always loved trying to anticipate the unexpected/crazy things players might do and adding specific reactions to them. Actually, we originally planned to include a lot more of this kind of humor, but we had to cut it due to the jam's time constraints.

I'm really glad you liked the game, and thank you so much for your support!

Hyper-creative. The camera aspect is really fun to mess around with. I wish there was a little less guidance like not being told that someone having a blast but instead reading about the species and evaluating their emotions based on that but at the end of the day this is a damn good jam entry, holy molly. Face technology!? Thats insane! Intricate alien design!!? Thats incredible! Your second ludum entry!!!? Thats so interesting! You people have a knack for this, truly!

Face-controlled gameplay is such a fresh, fun idea, and the alien story and art fit the Signal theme perfectly. Expression recognition can be a little inconsistent, and frequent code inputs feel tedious, yet this piece is incredibly creative and well-crafted.

Full marks for innovation. I also had a lot of fun with this. It was very therapeutic pulling loads of face at my computer. It would have been nice to have been able to get more info on reactions from the images rather than the text, but I get that it probably wasn't possible in the time allowed. I loved the interface as well. having to put in all the codes was a nice touch. Good stuff :8ball:

Tried to sneak in a quick rating before the deadline, but not sure I'll make it far enough into the game to give it a proper rating.

My one piece of feedback is I'd try to make the game more "snappy", get people into the core of the game quickly and then have the dialog afterwards. Though I do like the dialog and the way it's written!

Conceptually, I like this game a lot! Also, glad to have some non english speakers part of Ludum Dare! Hope you stick around.
