Air Signal by MicleFirst

[raw]
made by MicleFirst for Ludum Dare 59 (JAM)

Hello!

This is my first participation in a Game Jam and my first game overall. I had never created games before, so I misjudged my abilities and didn’t manage to finish it.

I don’t know programming, so I used Codex, but I worked on editing scenes, parameters, and so on. I created all the graphics for the game in Photoshop and also found free sound effects on pixabay.com.

I learned a lot and I’m really glad I took part. Hope you enjoy it! <3

Hello
This is my first game jam and my first game. On the first day I didn’t manage to do much, but I’ve already gained a lot of valuable experience. There are still many discoveries ahead.

A really amazing game. The graphics are awesome and gameplay too, felt like in Call of Duty while playing it. Although I encountered a bug that after my Hp dropped to 0 I didn't lose and the enemies just didn't do any damage anymore

One of the best graphics I have seen in a game jam. Loved this so much!

Incredible looking game, truly outstanding art. The audio design is also great, and it's very somber and immersive in tone. The gameplay is pretty simple, but that does not detract from the game being an outstanding solo work, let alone a FIRST AND SOLO work. Keep at it!

@alex-o, thanks! It actually wasn’t a bug :D I just postponed creating the plane destruction scene and later didn’t have time to finish it, so the game continues even at 0 HP.

As you can see, the signal theme isn’t fully explored. The game was supposed to be more story-driven, and the enemy spawning logic was meant to be different, but it ended up a bit simpler

Thank you! Your words are inspiring. The gameplay did turn out a bit too simple and repetitive, but I plan to make new, more interesting games and dedicate more time to polishing them.

Incredible graphics, I love the artstyle, it fits so well.
Would love to see more enemy variety or maybe different weapons.
Also not sure if it's intentional but I could keep playing when my Health was 0.

@nullmoxy Thank you for the feedback! <3 Overall, I was planning to make the game more story-oriented, but your point about the variety of weapons and enemies is completely valid. Unfortunately, regarding the 0 HP — I was going to implement that part at the very last moment, but then I ran out of time т.т

This is a very good game.

Considering that, as I understand it, the game was created by one person, it is very good.

Beautiful art and ready-made mechanics. (As I understand it, except for death, because when I had 0 HP I kept flying)

I didn't quite understand where the signals are, but maybe it's just me.

In general - an excellent game.

Thank you very much! Yes, I focused more on polishing the small part of the game I managed to complete. So, unfortunately, the rest of the gameplay didn’t get much attention.
Still, I’m glad you appreciated the effort put into the visuals and atmosphere

Excellent! Loved the visual damage feedback on the cockpit. The art is fantastic too - everything looks beautiful and stylized. The UI is clean, every element serves a purpose. Really enjoyable gameplay - I blew up all 99 planes on the last wave. (A praise screen after pulling that off would've been a nice touch, but that's a minor thing.)

It genuinely took me back to childhood, playing these kinds of games on arcade machines at the mall. Really great stuff!

This was a treat! Really cool aesthetic, the sound and the controls work perfectly together - the aim lag for the turret was a great idea. I think you've got something decent here! In particular with the art, I love how so many static elements work together to sell the idea that the plane is moving - it's extremely well done!

Only thing to note is the plane needs more armor! Just add it in the red dots, that's where planes get shot :D

I really love this game’s art style. As your health drops, the fighter’s hull gradually shows damage and wear, which is a great detail.
Considering this is your first game development work, the overall performance and gameplay feel are really smooth and well-polished. I’m looking forward to further optimization and updates in the future.

Currently, the gameplay mostly only relies on mouse movement and shooting. It would be great to add more distinct interactive mechanics later on.
I also tried using WASD controls and noticed the lever has corresponding feedback animations, yet the cloud scenery outside the window never moves. This small mismatch left me a little confused while playing, haha.

I really put quite a lot of effort into the visuals. Going forward, I also plan to work on the gameplay to make the game more engaging.

@panduplan Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I’ll try to take that into account so that shots feel more impactful on enemies. I had also already drawn explosion sprites, but didn’t manage to implement them in time.

Thank you! I’m glad you noticed the damage system, as well as my attempt to make the gameplay more immersive. I spent quite some time working on that. Of course, I had way more ideas than I could implement, and I definitely should’ve paid more attention to the gameplay. I’ll try to take these mistakes into account when working on the game in the future :3

This is overall a very well made and fun little jam game. The visuals is really good, and sound effects is overall pretty good with little weirdness to some of it. The game all needs some kind of ending. But else a really good jam game. Very well done.

Well done on your first jam game! Even if it's mechanically simple, it's satisfying to play, and has a very nice aesthetic. I shot down all 99 planes on that final wave until they stopped spawning lol.

I hope you participate in future jams as well, I'm sure you'll continue to make some pretty cool stuff.

That was insanely stylish. Love the use of static images to create so much life within the cockpit. The faux-3D effect of the controls stick, the turret delay, the glowing red lights, the diegetic UI, all felt extremely cohesive. The audio effects were mixed well and added to the atmosphere. I could be reading too much into it, but for the final stage where the enemy count goes to 99, and by this point, my health was at 0, mixed with the faded audio design and synth ambience, made me feel like I had died and was fighting these aerial battles as a warrior's apparition. Don't know if you're inspired by the Machine Games Wolfenstein reboot, but your scene feels reminiscent of that weighty, chunky desaturated feeling. Really awesome, glad to hear you're turning this into a bigger project!
