Signal on the Horizon

You wake from your primal slumber and can feel the need to light the ancient beacon. Everything in your peaceful valley depends on you reaching that brazier to warn all other elemental spirits.

What to do?

  • You only have limited fuel - at the top left you see how much longer you last
  • Collect charcoal to gain additional time
  • Don't idle in the rain, your fuel consumption increases there
  • Reaching the beacon grants you score depending on your remaining fuel
  • Your strongest move: walljump!

Controls

|Input|Effect| |-|-| |A <-> D|Walk left-right| |W/Space|Jump| |S|fall quickly|

Xbox/PS/Nintendo Controllers should work: * with D-Pad and Left Joystick for walking * A on Xbox for Jumping (Other Controllers similar placed buttons)

Cute little fire sprite. Platforming feels pretty good, but the ability to infinitely gain more height by constantly wall jumping on the same wall should probably be fixed and not utilized in the level design. Some kind of boost or double jump at the expense of time would be cool, using up some firepower.

Nice game! I coulndt really master the 1-wall jump, and that last bit before beacon was a bit too harsh. Otherwise it was quite well made, smooth graphics and funny death animation)

Здорово. Простая и очень красивая игра. Чувствуется стиль. Дополнительно эффект от жара классный. // Я есть в таблице лидеров))

Fun, cute graphics! I'm not sure if I missed something about the controls and wall jumping, but actually reaching the beacon at the end was really hard with how the wall jump is made to prevent just endless climbing. Other than that, the controls felt nice and the time limit was nicely balanced.

Poor little thing, don't let it touch the water

Such a cute game!! I love the sprites and spent a good couple minutes trying to beat the game. Just played through it again while writing this and omg you save the scores?? That's such a cool feature. Makes me wanna keep playing to try and get the best score. Another thing that I noticed that I loved was the face the main fire guy makes when they're being rained on. Overall a lovely little platformer. ^^

Pretty good platformer. I liked to abuse double jump ;) Really love the little cute ember :)

Nice entry! I really like the clean sprites. I also notices the subtle distortion shader on the smoke effect - really cool! I feel like the wall jump could have been a bit more responsive maybe, but other than that great work!

Absolutely adorable and pretty solid movement controls, would have happily kept playing.
The idea is neat and has interesting potential for expanding on the fuel mechanic, keep going!

So fun. Took me a bit to figure out the controls, but nice work!

The main character was really cute! It was nice to see a game without a digital screen, well done!

Fun short game! Contrary to other feedback, I like being able to jump on the same wall over and over, reminds me a lot of Super Meat Boy - just wish it was a bit more consistent :P
Great job!

I really enjoyed the resource management challenge of the journey. Having to balance collecting charcoal against the limited fuel supply gives the run a wonderful sense of tension and urgency. It made the final push to light the beacon feel genuinely earned!

This game is super fun. The speedrun aspect + leaderboard made me play it 10x as long as I would have otherwise. The controls are great, I noticed the coyote time and how well the wall jumping worked. I couldn't beat the #1 player, not sure how it's possible, even after looking for bugs (I couldn't find any). Not sure how falling faster is useful, I didn't use it in my best time.
!> Once I noticed a time bonus behind the cloud I had to check every cloud. Also, the last jump seems strange to me, since I had to scale the wall by wall jumping 3x which seemed unintentional.

Awesome game, great work.

Edit: After rereading the description I noticed the rain lowers your score. With a new route the best I could do is 6290

Thank you so much everyone for playing the game - I am glad you enjoyed it and had some fun!

@mostlikely your best attempt is already incredibly fast - well done! There is one hint I can give regarding the physics implementation:

!> wallriding slows your gravity pull, so starting a wallride while you still have some upward movement allows you to reach some additional height - best noticed when starting a jump exactly while hugging a wall

!> for the last jump: during our testplays it was possible to reduce the quite consistently required 3 successive walljumps to only one, if you touch the wall very early and use the reduced gravity to gain some extra height

!> apart from the coyote time, there is also some input buffering for jumps, so hitting the jump button a little bit earlier might assist you as well

!> the faster fall is actually useful in at least 2 scenarios as far as we can tell for now

@Fis I managed to get the last jump to one, but it's very inconsistent. Is it a bug or intended? It seems like I can jump, and jump again right before I hit the wall gaining extra momentum but I'm not consistent. I also managed to save time with faster fall but I can't get to a time of 7000. Maybe my route isn't ideal.
I've played this game for way too long lol.

@mostlikely the last jump was intended to be challenging, but taking casual gamers into consideration we should have made it easier

I recorded a video reaching a score of 6873, maybe you'll find some optimizations watching it!

This is the first game ive seen that makes the theme the objective and not a core mechanic, cute fun little platformer, well done cool game.

Nice little plattformer. Main character is very cute. I like the expression change, while getting wet.

Adding heavy rainy clouds, which destroy you on impact, but have a pattern where they change between raining and not could be an additional gameplay feature.
Being able to jump on the wall like in Super Meat Boy is a mechanic I like, but I couldn't get it properly work in your game. Something is missing for me in the controls here.

Apart from that the controls felt good and I like the aesthetics of the game. Everything is very clear to read. :)

I really got invested in speedrunning this one. At first I was a little confused about the ending, I thought it was kind of odd that you have to walljump like that, but then as I game it another try I understood the potential it had as a semi advanced strat.

Very cute character and the platforming feels solid.

I agree with some others that gaining height with multiple wall jumps in a row feels a bit clunky.

@Fis It took me 2 hours total but I finally did it.

!> I noticed to get the 1 jump consistent at the end, you have to face away from the wall and hit jump right before wall sliding, it gives you an extra jump which allows you to get over the wall in 1.

@mostlikely incredible score! this kind of jump was definitely not intended during development, but makes enough fun to be probably reworked into an intended more accessible feature (like grabbing the wall and jumping immediately/as long as there was no gravity pull for 0.1 seconds - triggers this jump intendedly) - it makes navigating the level more interesting

also a friend of mine mentioned "a coalless route" to be interesting - to have different highscore boards with different challenges

thank you for playing the game so much! really appreciated!

A cohesive and charming game 😄 Really enjoyed jumping around, dodging the rain, and watching all the little character animations. The movement and overall feel stayed playful throughout.

Would love to see even more signal/beacon interactions expanded across later levels too, especially with stronger visual cohesion between them. The leaderboard was a nice touch as well. Those highscores genuinely surprised me 😅 I managed around 129 on a first-ish try.

The ambience, visuals, and music tied everything together nicely. A darker/night variation with little beacons lighting up the path ahead could be a really cool direction too, especially for readability and atmosphere. Good job team!
