The Spirit of Medusa by sockfolder

[raw]
made by sockfolder for LD34 (COMPO)
Once upon a time, the legendary hero used a mirror to reflect Medusa's gaze back upon herself. Medusa was turned to stone, but her spirit lived on within. Now, she has regained her strength and even mightier powers. It is time for revenge; it is time to turn the world to stone.

TLDR: Medusa has a magical gaze that changes radius over time. When enemies are in the grey donut-shaped region, press Z to turn them to stone over time. Stoned enemies become your "towers" (like in a tower defense), which attack in a radius around them when you press X. Damaged enemies turn to stone more easily. Survive as long as possible.

Medusa has two abilities:
Z - Activate her gaze, turning enemies in stone over time. Her gaze is indicated by the grey circle with oscillating radius. Time this ability for maximum effect.
X - Activate the stoned enemies, causing them to unleash an attack. This can reduce the enemy's health and make them easier to stone. Medusa has a small attack as well.

When the power of the stone effect (gray bar) is more than the remaining health of enemies (green bar), the enemies turn to stone instantly from Medusa's gaze. This is indicated by a flashing gray bar.

Stoned enemies get in the way of living foes, blocking their path to Medusa. In addition, Medusa can use the stone "statues" to attack and weaken other enemies. However, if the path to Medusa is entirely blocked, several statues are destroyed by Zeus (after all, that would be too easy). Note: There are some pathfinding bugs.

Medusa uses her powers to activate her gaze, and cannot do so for lengthy periods of time (see gray bar at the top of the screen). When she runs out of health (green bar at the top of the screen), she dies and you must restart.

Defeat all the waves to win (when there are over 20 enemies on the screen at once, you are getting close). Beware, later enemies are more powerful.

Hint: You must accumulate an army of statues as best you can to survive the later waves.

I like the artwork and the theme is very creative, but I did not fully understand the game play. It would be good to add a points system so I can tell how well I'm doing and see when I beat my best score.

Really nice take on the themes! A good challenge, too.

Can be described as "tower defense" where you have no way to improve your defenses (and enemies still become stronger over time), also you don't get any profit from defeating enemies / completing waves.
Pretty boring, actually D:

I couldnt understand anything what was happening, the circles just kept changing size, and the keys somehow changed the result, but there wasn't really any logic in how it worked. Not sure what the game was about.

Nice game, took some time to really comprehend what's going one, but it was pretty enjoyable afterwards. Couldn't beat it though, as my stone minions keep getting destroyed. ;_;
Would be nice if after game over one could begin the game from the last wave, not totally from the beginning.
Sound effects reminded me of the first 8-bit game consoles. :D
Coll game!
