Magic Lumberjack by JoseArias

[raw]
made by JoseArias for LD34 (JAM)
Show your lumberjack skills and cut all the wood you can without missing!!!

Calculate the needed strength for each chunk and cut it.
Chunks cut by 1 hit have double value!

Be careful! If your last hit is stronger than necessary or if you hit the chunk more than 3 times, you will lose the axe and you will have to start again.

Watch the fruit! Each one will give you a temporary extra ability. Will you try them?

Hold and Release X to hit the chunk.
Press Z to eat a fruit.

Fruits:
Extra strength - Selfexplanatory
Extra precision - The “right cut” range is increased.
Extra life - If you miss the hit (Third cut is incorrect or the cut is too strong), you have another try.

Themes were growing and two button controls. We decided to do both!

Simple, I liked it. Took me awhile to get going. Record was 5 i think. Lost interest quickly but for those 5 minutes or so it was good. Nice art and sound

I loved the art style and the polka music, but I feel you could be more lenient with the margin for error.

Man, that was tough. Great visual style though.

Thanks for the comments!
@Miltage if you make the game easier, it means that you will not fail and there is not challenge.

Liked it! But wasn't too sure if the "you hit too much, you loose" mechanic isn't too "demanding".

@lawendt Yes! One important point is the difficulty. "How long can you go without lose". Our mother was one of the testers and she achieved to score 8 points.

the art work was excelant and the gameplay was straightforward. Great game! The only thing I would say was I wasn't really sure the effects the fruit actually had.

Needs a little practice to find the good balance, but it don't take much time to be fun. :D

PS : Sorry for all that broken glasses...

Visuals are top notch. I couldn't get the hang of when I applied too much power, sometimes it felt like even a very short hold/release would have the axe flying. Good idea and integration with the themes.

I thought the game was awesome!

I found it a little hard to get used to how much strength to use as I kept flinging the axe out of my hands but once I got the hang of it, it was ok.

Looks awesome too!

The intro tutorial-screen is sooooo long :D I liked the game. It's simple, with nice graphics and well-chosen music.

Great art and audio. The tutorial screen was a nice touch. However, I didn't enjoy trying to guess how long to hold x with limited guidance. I think either more guidance, or more forgiveness could have gone a long way.

If instead of losing the game, it merely lowered our efficiency/score; swinging too much/too far, I think it could have been more enjoyable. The lose condition could be time-based or something else entirely.

Overall, great work!
