Where's my money, Gnomski?!?

A cozy yet chaotic game about reclaiming debts from forgetful little gnomes.

Gnomski-630-500.png

The Story

You arrived in the quiet and peaceful village called Debt Meadow, where gnomes live in happiness, harmony, and TERRIBLE DEBTS.

Your task as a COLLECTOR is to track down the gnome in debt among the hundreds of Debt Meadow residents using a scroll with his appearance and personality traits.

AND TO SHAKE HIM DOWN OF HIS COINS!

Please do not disturb honest villagers who are not on our list, or pay them one gold coin if you have made a mistake.

If you run out of gold coins, don't worry... WE'LL JUST FIRE YOU.

Theme: Collector

Where’s My Money, Gnomski?!? explores the Ludum Dare 58 theme pretty much straightforward: - You literally play a role of a Debt Collector, equipped with all tools needed and ready to use all tricks to get things done. - Besides that, a key skill in collecting anything is the ability to distinguish valuable and important things from the ordinary ones. Similarly, in our game, the core gameplay revolves around Tracking Down debtor in the village full of regular gnomes. - Game Mode and win/lose conditions of our game also built around theme of collecting money and depends on how precise you are in tracking a debtor.

Key Features

  • Simulation of a settlement populated by 130(!!!) unique gnomes.
  • Appearance of each gnome is randomly generated from various parts(Hat, Eyebrows, Beard, Mustache) and colors.
  • Each gnome has its own unique set of character traits(Food preferences, attitude towards the player, opinion on VIOLENCE) which determines their behavior.
  • 15+ different debtor gnomes to track down spread through 10 levels.
  • Incredibly funny gnome voiceover(even when you kick them), and an incredibly gnomish soundtrack.
  • YOU CAN KICK GNOMES and they fly away in a fancy way.
  • Secret part of game level with photos of our team's cats. Yes. CATS.

Tips for Players

  • You'll start a game with a scroll with an image of a gnome debtor on it. Use it! Compare all gnomes you encounter with an image, until you find a right one.
  • Once you've found the gnome with matching appearance, chase debtor and press [E] to shake him and his purse.
  • At some point, appearance alone won’t be enough to be sure it’s the right gnome. But don't worry. We got you covered. Take a look at the scroll, and you'll see icons: what debtor like and don't like. Use Item near your suspect and check his reaction - this is the way!
  • Gnomes won’t react to items you're holding(unless you scare them even more with it).
  • If you really need an item that a specific gnome has — just kick him and take it :)
  • If you bother an innocent gnome, you’ll have to pay for their silence(and maybe give them a kick for being uncooperative).
  • If you need a closer look at a gnome — TAKE A CLOSER LOOK(Right Mouse Button).
  • If gnomes get really scared, they might run to the farthest corner(Can't blame them tbh).

Did you actually opt out of the Graphics category??

Oct 07th · 00:22 UTC
This is quite a fun game! I love having to identify the right gnome through every small detail, which also makes each gnome feel so unique. The items around the game that help in the search are a great idea, as are the personality traits. However, I feel like there should be less traversal across the map and more focus on comparing the picture with the gnome, since the comparison is monumentally more fun. I found myself walking a lot while searching for a gnome sometimes. Another critique I have is that the game feels a bit insensitive toward vegans and deaf people. The term "Saint Salad," the thunder dialogue about the deaf gnome, and the way the game incentivizes using the whistle to find the deaf gnome made me feel a bit uncomfortable. However, everything else is on point. Good job!

@timo5034 yeap. We created environment from the market assets so we opt out graphics. But Level art we created on our own. It's sad, cause gnomes, and scroll are our own, and created in this three days. Do you think it's a mistake to opt out?

The first five minutes were fun. Then I realized I couldn't find the gnome I needed. I wanted to turn it off, but then I decided to restart it. I restarted it, and miraculously, I found the first gnome. Finding the second gnome was also difficult. But when I realized I could kick gnomes for free, things got a little more fun. I found the second gnome. It was time for the third. At that point, I gave up. They're impossible to find. The graphics are nice, the atmosphere is great, but I'd like some hints. For example, if the game were more playable, it would throw the right gnome at the player after a couple of minutes.

Oct 07th · 10:06 UTC
@kit-gorn Thanks for the feedback! Sounds super valid, we thought about some extra tips, but didn't have time to implement them(write current location, for example "Windmill" on a scroll, or item that would last some time but give some sound clues of the direction and the proximity of a gnome)...

But in the end we left debug on. Press "L" and look in the skies, you'll understand where little guy is)

Really loved the atmosphere in this. Fantastic work having all the different gnome variations, its incredible how you have so many combinations. I did find the game somewhat frustrating after a while, i wish that there was more of a general indication of where they might be. I found myself just wondering around for ages looking for one gnome constantly re-visiting locations to double check I didn't miss them. Maybe a secondary gameplay could have been a way to give more clues to their location.
Overall a good take on the theme.

Look, I'm going to be honest here with you. I spent **FAR MORE TIME** kicking random gnomes around their cozy village than I did doing what I was hired for. I even tried to make some kind of sport out of it. Only after about half an hour of gnome ball did I decide to go collect some money. I shook down the wrong gnome five times in a row and got fired. Sadly.

But that's okay, because I will just come back for some relaxing gnome ball!

Wow, this is so good! You've done a massive job. The location is awesome, and the atmosphere is top-notch. It's just fun to play, and the graphics are cool too!
A couple of small things: it lags a bit sometimes, probably from too many objects on screen.
I also found it pretty tough to locate the right gnome. Would be cool if there were some abilities to help with the search, like a hint system or something, especially since the area is big
But really, it's very cool, you guys are awesome!

Tax collector was one of my initial brainstorms, love that somebody ended up doing one. The lighting is blindingly harsh. I didn't mind it much for the first mission, but it kept just shining straight into my eyes the whole game. Would have been interesting if it got later in the day as you completed each mission. Tuning the sun back by half and adding in a global light to soften the shadows would do wonders for game feel. Also, a stone instead of a locked gate was definitely a choice. The credits cave with the cat shrine was a nice touch. Would have been interesting if the gnomes fought back, could even just be throwing whatever item they're holding at you. The last mission was particularly tricky since he kept running away when I entered an area. Cheeky little twist. I harassed far too many innocent gnomes and did not do well. Still had a great time.

So many gnomes, holy cow! I was a bit overwhelmed with just how many were scampering around the map but I had a blast tracking the pesky little debtors down. The items you can hold to scare/attract is a cool idea. Very neat idea, looks great and was well done!

Not necessarily the most unique idea on this theme, but the execution of it absolutely is. For a jam game this is well done but with a big team you can usually get a lot done. Would've loved if this had been a web game instead of unreal engine, but can't have the world at my fingertips.

Very charming with the gnome behavior and world design! In the second level it was a little confusing how there was a gap in the gnome's beard ingame, but not on the scroll. But it was enjoyable to just walk around and explore the world even when it took a while to find the right gnome

The 3D visuals and atmosphere are really well done — especially impressive considering it’s a jam project. The overall polish feels above jam level.

That said, I personally get a bit dizzy with 3D camera movement, so I couldn’t play for too long .

Overall, fantastic work! You clearly put a lot of effort into making this look and feel great.
