[raw]
made by LDJam user 411255 for Ludum Dare 57 (JAM)

CONTROLS:

ARROW KEYS: MOVE

Z: JUMP/CONFIRM

X: ATTACK/CANCEL

C: CROUCH/SLIDE (WHILE RUNNING)

A: PREVIOUS WEAPON

S: NEXT WEAPON

well, it's not much, and it doesn't really fit the theme, but this is my first time doing a game jam ever, and besides reusing some old sound effects I made and paraphrasing some of my old code from other projects, everything I made (so basically just the code and music...) was from scratch, so I'm proud enough of that.

you can kind of "bullet jump" by starting a slide and then immediately jumping, I even made that boost your momentum a little bit. as you can imagine I spent most of my "development time" just playing around with that. if I end up expanding on this that's something I'd like to focus on really building the game around. you also jump much higher if you're crouching/crouch-walking when you jump.

i wanted to add basic enemy behavior and player death, but vertigo had other plans for me this weekend. honestly, I want to add a lot more to this, I might just keep working on it. but as far as I got done during the jam, this is it. hopefully next time I can make something a bit more concrete and "actually a game"-ish but I'm not unhappy with this.

sprites come from:

2D Pixel Art Character Template Asset Pack by ZeggyGames (itch.io)

Blocks by etqws3 (OpenGameArt)

Metroid like by Chipmunk (OpenGameArt)

Space War Man by Emcee Flesher (OpenGameArt)

music was made in:

WaveTracker

music by me, sound effects by me, code by me

Nice start. The jump is interesting, continuing to accelerate up while in the air.

Hey, it's your first go! Congrats on submitting something, also... **wow?!** What's there is *great*.

The music is just \*chef's kiss\*. *Perfecto.*

That slide jump is the stuff of dreams, I'm tellin' you! Feels awesome to do.

You got a decent variety of weapons, my one qualm is that the firing arc doesn't always seem to be consistent, but then again the focus was clearly on player movement and building something playable.

While it might just be an engine test, it is one rad as hell engine test. Thanks for building a playground for all of this cool movement tech!

The movement feels wonderful and I love the mood of it. Feels like a world I could spend a long time in if it's expanded upon.

Thank you for your game! Looks like a good basis for future projects. The movement is really well done.

Regarding the slide jump: At first it was a bit ... unusual, but after a short while, I really liked it.

i really like the music and the sfx. Sure the game is short but for a short platformer it is still ok.
Another question: i am unable to rate your game (i dont see the Ratings). Is it just me or is it normal ?

Very short & sweet! With the parallax background I hoped that you'd be able to go back in the background layers

This is really well executed! The art is amazing, music, movement is PERFECT. It really feels like a SNES game. Is it just me, or you don't have ratings open? But anyway, The game is great.

PS: Not sure if it is a feature or not, but the enemies are not moving at all.

WOW thanks so much for all the very kind comments!!! yes, I did opt-out of ratings, just because I felt like it wasn't "really a game" (there's no real objective or win condition) and yeah, I wasn't able to make the enemies move or attack in time for the submission cutoff, though that was the last thing I planned to add before submitting. the player bullets handling weird is another thing i plan to fix when I expand on this, originally it felt weird for them to not inherit *any* of the player's movement velocity (so you could outrun the red projectile if you fired it at the start of a slide jump, for example) but them inheriting vertical velocity makes it almost feel more like artillery. either way, thanks for all the feedback!!! once i expand on this some more, i'll leave another comment here linking to where you can play new versions/get development updates. :D

Fun little platformer! I wound up sticking to the red spell orb for most of my run. The aesthetics were super well done - from the music to the SNES-style pixel art.

I found the controls a bit unintuitive at first - I would've expected WASD / space to control my movement, but I wound up needing to check the controls page to figure that out. Once I got that it wasn't too bad though! Only other thing is I found my weapon fire fell down too fast.

Overall awesome job for your first shot at a game jam. I'd love to see what you make the next time around!

I really like the style of the game! The shooting mechanics are really pleasant, the movement is on point. Smooth transition from slide to jump, the jumps themselves - magic. Incredibly well done, congrats!

short and sweet. Very satisfying bullets from the three weapon types. Like some others said I recommend more intuitive controls, maybe wasd and mouse or ,. to shoot and qe to switch weapons. Great art and animations as well, very smooth and clean.

A good start for a more ambitious gameplay experience in your next platformer. It's a bit of a shame that the "enemies" aren't "dangerous."
I love the music ; it's perfect for this kind of game, and surprisingly varied.

Yeah, a great, impressive first entry! The stuff that is inside is already quite well polished, honestly you'd add some levels, enemy movement etc and you're good to go! Anyway, the movement is very smooth, I liked the graphics and same for audio (very polished). Great job, thanks!

The music is great, and the sliding mechanic feels super satisfying. I could definitely see this being used as a base for a really interesting movement-based platformer. Great job!

Ah, sad I can't rate.
Really nice concept, reminds me of the old early 90's DOS games. Can see potential, the main character animation and movement feel great. Would recommend to keep working on this , especially given the content you've finished nails the old school style so well. Keep it up!

Great job on the music - I still dabble with the old tracker music, as that was what Unreal Tournament used back in the day.

You did a good job with the character movement, 2d movement can be difficult to feel natural.

The music is REALLY good, I would love to play a full game with a soundtrack like this.

This is a good playable build! If you had an artist I think the game could look complete! But the asset build looks good.

The mechanics are interesting, I like the variety of attacks with the lamp. :) I wouldn't have understood some of the character mechanics if I hadn't looked at the description.

The music is great! As a fan of 90s consoles, this music conveys the Ludum theme well

And yes! ^^
