Rutabaga Rocket by Alex Garbus

[raw]
made by Alex Garbus for Ludum Dare 53 (COMPO)

Play as Turble the turbo turtle in this ~~probably~~ too speedy platformer! Climb upward and collect Rutabaga Rockets to deliver to Rutarabbit, but keep the pace up: you need to deliver as many as possible, as fast as possible. Experience 1 of 4 ~~barely~~ unique endings depending on your performance!

Changelog

  • Version 5 fixes problems with controller input, makes particles visible in the web version, removes the Git plugin (this was causing non-fatal errors), and changes the fullscreen mode to exclusive. This version was exported as a debug build, which should fix the crashing that occurred on the desktop version (I have no idea why).
  • Version 4 switches to the Compatibility renderer, updates the particle effects, adds missing background textures, fixes the custom icon not appearing on Windows, and fixes the Rutabaga Rockets rotating incorrectly.
  • Version 3 is the version submitted for the jam deadline. The builds of this version are available to download on the itch page alongside the updated builds, labelled with "compo".

This game is super fun. It controls really well. I love the hyper-fast movement. It might have been good to introduce the rockets slightly earlier. I think that many players will fail the tricky jump before first checkpoint and close the game before seeing the main mechanic. Also, while it is cool that the game has music, I think the song becomes irritating because it is such a short loop. This is one of my favorite games I've played this jam, great work.

Love the fast pace and precise movement! But still I was late... Maybe I should try again :-)

Omg, I had to play this one just based on the thumbnail alone. I like the fast pace, it makes it feel more exciting, but it does make it feel a little twitchy/difficult. I really loved the mechanic of the rutabaga rockets, and the tutorial nicely scaffolded teaching the player how to use them. The checkpoints are a nice touch, they make the game a lot more forgiving. The music is super loud on my headphones but that's my only complaint. Super cute sprite work!
