My Flavor-ite Kidnapper by ThomasTournoys

[raw]
made by ThomasTournoys for Ludum Dare 53 (JAM)

In this game you are an ice cream seller. Or are you? In fact you are a disguised cult member in the mission of kidnapping enough people for the cult's sacrifice.

But make sure to keep an eye out though, there's a spy in the neighborhood...

Keep the disguise on by delivering ice cream throughout the streets while kidnapping the right people.

I runned out of time in the end so there is no sound and possibly some bugs. (Maybe some English mistakes too, it isn't my first language and I was speed-typing)

Some screenshots of the game: Screenshot 2023-05-01 11.04.03 PM.png Screenshot 2023-05-01 11.04.25 PM.png

This was also my first (successful) game jam (also also my first actually "finished" and released game), please be kind, I know it has some issues, post LD game will come soon.

*Updates: *

Released a postmortem along with the v1.1 update on itch, you can check it here if you like: https://cosmicfoxgame.itch.io/my-flarorite-kidnapper/devlog/527160/postmortem-and-post-jam-bug-fixes

Changelog - v1.1 - post jam fixes (06/05/2023) - You can now kidnap people in any order (before continuing to the next level you needed to kidnap people in the exact order shown to you, hopefully, this makes the game easier) - Buttons and speech bubbles now scale from the center instead of the side - Fixed a bug where the game crashes upon finishing all levels - Got rid of the “Exit” button on the web browser version (it just crashes the game). It will still be present in the desktop version - Changed some text to make the instructions more clear, and also fixed mistakes and typos - Speech bubbles now properly resizes to fit text when clicking to skip typing animation - Fixed a bug where you could skip a customer without either giving ice cream nor kidnapping them

Changelog - v1.2 (09/05/2023) - Fixed a bug where as long as you kidnap the required personalities you can kidnap as many people as you want (I overlooked it while fixing the first bug related to kidnapped people)

Very nice entry!!! The art was on another level and the whole game was fun to play and very polished. Too bad about the lack of sound, but nothing a post jam update can't fix. Congrats on your first finished and released game!!! 💪

Very fun little choices game! Love the art and the dialogue from each character and the gameplay loop analyze each one to kidnap them or not! Such a charming game!

I like the idea, and I didn't find any bugs in my short playtime.

On the topic of scope, I think the only real way to avoid scope problems is to have already gone over scope in the past.

Even though there weren't many, the characters have really great designs and the pencil-drawn aesthetic goes really well in this kind of game. Interesting ideas here too. Would love to potentially see more done with it! :)

Your game has amazing attention to detail and the mechanics are so smooth. The level design is also cleverly designed and challenging, which kept me engaged throughout the entire game. Well done!

I really like the art style. It fits well with the aesthetic to this game. While sound effects would go well with this, it's a charming little game nonetheless.

The art style is so cute! I'd love to see an expanded version of this game with more variation in characters, but as it stands this is a very solid little entry.

The art is really great. Given more time it would be awesome to see different characters since the style is so aesthetically pleasing. Nice job on your first finished game!

Love the art style. I didn't really understand it, it said to kidnap the sad person and I got 3 sads, then it said grumpy and it seemed to stop the round as soon as I got the 1st grumpy. Not sure if it was a bug or maybe I just didn't understand.

Good flavor-ite pun, especially since English is not your 1st language :).

Good effort, I enjoyed it.

Thanks, everyone for playing my game, it always makes my day seeing that people are playing (and liking it). I'm also very happy that people liked the art, it's my strong suit, but I was a bit worried with the style

Also, made some bug fixes (there was a huge game-breaking bug), hopefully it is easier now and instructions are clearer

I couldn't play the game in English, as it was only available in Portuguese. However, with the help of a translator, I was able to play it without any issues. Despite the language barrier, I found the game to be quite interesting.

The art style in the game is really good, and the mechanics are simple but effective. With a few more characters, music, sound effects, and a full version release, I think it has the potential to be a great game.

Well done!

I like the art style! Your user interface is very clean, and responsive. Unfortunately I cannot understand Portuguese :( But! the more I played it the more I felt like I was learning to read Portuguese, and actually I wonder if your game could be applied as a learning tool for languages. just an idea! well done, i enjoyed it

@hagamosvideojuegos sorry, my bad, already fixed it

I test the game in Portuguese and didn't noticed it was only in Portuguese since the game auto-translates, but hopefully, it's all fine now

Interesting idea, and very well put together. The artwork and general flow is great.
I had a bit of trouble guessing some of the personalities, but I enjoyed the text.
It could have done with some audio.

Playing as a kidnapper in an ice cream truck is very cool!
I would have liked to have more variety in the characters but if the drawings are done during the jam it's already a great job!

Loved the art, wish it had even just a background loop or very simple sound as i think that hurts the experience quite a bit being silent. The auto-translation is gibberish at times but also pretty funny. (I have no idea why everyone keeps complaining about retrograde mercury or why people keep winking at me)

@raptor851 thanks. I'm working on a post-jam update with all the things I didn't manage to do in time for the jam, including sound, text revisions, and more personality types (there aren't many, so the same one gets repeated over and over again)
