Bricks and Fire by sudocoffee

[raw]
made by sudocoffee for Ludum Dare 53 (COMPO)

-- Stop the delivery before humanity meets a terrible fate --

There are only two tools: Halt boxes temporarily by placing brick walls, or destroy them using the fire tool.

Most of the jam was spent learning Godot (and Krita). Now has a web version below.

Controls

  • Mouse (Bricks): aim and click to place brick walls
  • Mouse (Fire): aim and hold to charge, then release when ready to destroy boxes
  • UP / DOWN: select tool
  • LEFT / RIGHT: change scene

Changelog

  • v1.1: fixed a critical bug that prevented clicking UI buttons with the mouse.

I LOVE the artstyle! There are so few games with hand drawn graphics it's crazy!
I couldn't figure out how to use fire the first time, I think you can make it more obvious.
The twist that you have to PREVENT delivery instead of making delivery yourself is a nive one!
I also maximized the window and got funny bug there
Overall good job, I had fun with your game! :smiley_cat:

The way the boxes keep getting bigger and more chaotic is quite amusing.
As it becomes increasingly busy, the game becomes even more enjoyable.

I managed to save 174 for humanity lol. Interesting little game. Great job with the jam! Keep up the good work and I look forward to what you make in the future!

The difficulty curve seemed pretty incredibly steep, like it went from "Huh, how could I ever possibly lose this?" to "Holy shit, what am I even supposed to do?" in a matter of seconds, but other than that, really fun lil game!

Artstyle is nice, and unique interpretation of the theme!

I thought the learning curve on the game wasn't too bad, but it did take me some clicking around to figure out the fire. I think if the boxes came a little slower in the first 15 seconds I would have been able to absolutely get a high score, I will have to live with my 114 for now....

Fun concept, great art.

Cool entry! Why can't I vote for humor? I think the nuclear launch was really funny.

@sezdev -- Eh, I guess that makes sense! Didn't really think about humor one way or another when making the game, but I see why that could be pretty hilarious. Went ahead and added the humor rating.

At some point I just started focusing on the fire near the missile silo, and then a HUUUGE box just slammed straight through. Funniest thing I've seen all Jam. Really like the graphics for a compo game. I also spent this jam learning godot! I thought it was pretty good.

@phlip45 -- Haha, glad to hear that! Cool to have a fellow godot learner.

I also thought at first that it was too easy, because you could spam brick walls everywhere, but the longer you play, the harder it gets. Nice entry

Grats on the first jam! Some thoughts:
It was unclear to me why the giant boxes just showed up and blew up everything I had made, maybe I missed something because it happened on another screen, but it would have been nice to understand why I suddenly lost.
The fire tool was a bit unintuitive to me, maybe having an empty circle that shows up when you have it selected would be nice. Or just something to indicate you have it selected, and it's doing the first part of the charging.

Thanks all!

@gametrodon -- That was a side effect of A) boxes generating more frequently over time and B) combined boxes moving faster. Once the boxes are frequent enough to combine by themselves, the first one snow-balls and eats up every box in the game. Wasn't originally intended, but I was scrambling and didn't get much time to playtest :)

Definitely makes sense about the fire tool. I had meant to add some kind of target under the mouse while that tool was selected.

Good job completing the compo! It was fun seeing the idea you came up with get realized. Were the assets hand drawn? I think that creates an interesting asthetic.

I really like the idea and hand drawn art style.
It looked easy in the beginning, but boy was I wrong :D
It can get really challenging
Good entry

@johnsensei -- Not quite hand drawn, I drew it all in Krita with a pen tablet. But I definitely went for a hand drawn look.

Just like in real life, I failed to save humanity :joy:

Neat little game. Great first entry :)

A simple idea but it makes the game complex! how can it be that with two options it can be so much fun. My congratulations! The design of the game seems to me of incredible quality and the graphics also accompanies it. Great game, congratulations!

A fun and pretty well made little game. It took a bit of time to understand how to play, but when first learned it, it was pretty fun to play. To bad there is not music and sound effects, but else a good jam game.

Nice first entry, love the diegetic UI! The difficulty curve was pretty amusing as first I had no idea how the fire worked and it was way too hard but in the end I could keep the boxes in the first screen with some serious fire spam. Not sure if I should have waited even longer but it didn't seem to get hard enough that they could escape my fire blasting further into the level :D

@jk5000 I totally meant to add sound and music, but ran out of time. Maybe next jam :)

There is nothing better for learning a new tool quickly than a game jam! I really like the graphics style and it feels like a good style of game to learn a lot of what Godot has to offer on. Great work! :D
