Midnight Ninja by shared

[raw]
made by shared for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

Slice first, sheathe your sword and watch the results of your actions. In this fast ninja game, any and all damage you inflict will only be applied every 10 seconds, as you sheathe your katana, as a very cliché and over the top finisher.

The game features fast movement, double jumps, wall jumping and dashing.

Aim for a high score by killing as many enemies as possible at the same time !

Controls:

WASD - Move

Shift - Dash / Sprint (Hold)

Space - Jump

Mouse1 - Attack

Mouse2 - Use shuriken

E - Advance level when available

Edit: Fixed a bug that would stop you from progressing to the next level if you died, and stopped you from reaching level 3

Very interesting, the idea of dealing damage every 10 seconds is an original way to fit the theme, I like the katana animations and the level design. Maybe making the character invulnerable while dashing would be great, since I always took damage when trying to hit the ennemies since they don't die instantly

@kaimon Thank you ! I would like to create more levels for it in the future too !

@rinkuji Glad you like it, thank you ! The dash was supposed to give the character invulnerability frames but I forgot to implement it , as well as the giving the dash a cooldown

@thoastbot Happy to hear you liked it, there were supposed to be signs in the first level about it. The third and last level is a bit harder than the other two, and needs some wall-jumping along the same wall. Thanks for the feedback !

Really liked the wall jumping. Felt smooth to move around and kill stuff anime-style  I'll admit I didn't get it until I read the instructions, so it a more developed version you might want to introduce that mechanic through a tutorial somehow. Cool game! Haven't seen anything like this yet.

Really cool and fun game. You get the hang of it fast enough, and I like the swift actions you can perform.

Thank you ! Glad you did !

@googlypoo I didn't have the time to draw the little tutorial pictures I had planned, so I designed the first level in a "show don't tell" way (or tried to anyway), that's why there's a singular weak enemy that's very easy to access and who is no threat to the player in the first level.

@torte478 Thank you, I hope you liked playing through it anyway. Since there's not that many levels, the parkour ramps up a bit too quick.

Thank you very much, happy you liked it !

Gameplay is very handy, but nothing really innovative. The Harakiri move is really funny but has no effect as far as I see. Would be nice if there were some more links to the theme.

I like the Artstyle, especially the main character :)

Kepp on doing games !

@jonnylynx Your comment confuses me, did you make it to the first enemy ? The move that kinda looks like the harakiri is the sword sheathe, "any and all damage you inflict will only be applied every 10 seconds, as you sheathe your katana, as a very cliché and over the top finisher."

Really cool idea! Felt just like a samurai movie hero. My one complaint is that I was not a huge fan of the parkour, I think that you should've leaned fully into Kurosawa combat. Nice job though!

Huge fan of FPS's with 2d / sprite graphics so I thought this looked great. Loved the idea it was really fun cutting up enemies.

Got stuck on the movement a bit at the start but got the hang of it. Would have loved some music.

Lots of fun I'd definitely play more if there were more levels :)
