[raw]
made by RatedDForDegenerate for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

A top-down 3D air-hockey inspired game. Kill waves of turrets and chasers and have random events mess with your run! How long can you last?

(It's also my first solo game-jam!)

Features -

Murderous Green Ball

Random events every 10 seconds

4 enemy types

Pretty lights

Walls?

Notes:

  • Sometimes, the ball can get stuck inside of the defenders shields from how they look around. Sorry about that.

    • Enemies can spawn inside of each other. If they take ages to die, you might of already killed them. There's probably just more inside, like a matryoshka doll.

    • If you hit the ball from moving at the beginning, you need to hit it again with your left click in order to load everything up properly.

    • Sometimes the Chaser enemies can spawn inside of the defenders, making the defender hold it hostage. It's technically a bug, but it's also really funny.

    • MOUSE AND KEYBOARD ONLY!

Run and exciting game. My suggestion would be to have the green ball not kill you, that way I could really get the ball rolling for some fast paced gameplay. Otherwise, I'm too scared of my own green ball killing me I don't want to interact with it, and to me the excitement comes from the ball zooming around quickly and hitting enemies. It could still come with a punishment, like the ball slows down or you get stunned when hit.

A lot is happening in a very short time after the start :D For me the controls feel a little off and dying from my own ball was a surprise, makes the whole game a lot harder. Would be cool if the player could bounce the red balls maybe or just didnt die from the green one.

Combining a simple classic game with new mechanics and ideas is always a good option IMO, and you definitely did a good job here! Congrats!

46.8 seconds survived, interesting idea for sure, biggest issue I had is that where the ball went when I clicked felt extremely unpredictable. At one point it was just going vertical REALLY fast and no amount of clicking while it was in the little light area would make it change direction, I was facing it just made it move even faster in the direction it was already going. I think an actual paddle would make it more intuitive, a small wall you rotate in the direction you want to face and the ball bounces off that. If you wanted to make it more air-hockey like just make the paddle circular instead of a flat wall just make it actually solid and bounce the ball off it. Overall a pretty fun game.

I spent a good time playing it. The little smoke when I hit the green ball was a amazing detail.
I felt the movement was a little off.
Congrats... nice little game! =)

I find the concept amazing! It's a bit difficult to control where the ball will go, but it's part of the fun. Well done!

Fun game, though I think dying to your own ball is not that fun. Also after several buffs to speed you'll move so fast that it will be an issue.

Also would've been nice if there was a bit of "randomness" in ball physics — I managed to get it stuck bouncing in almost every game.

Interesting idea! I enjoyed this -- I definitely found that I ended up dying to my own ball more than anything else, and it took me a while to realise that it was hurting me. I think the game would be a bit more enjoyable if the ball didn't hurt you -- at least at first, to ease the player into the game bit.

I enjoyed the variety of enemies, it was nice to restart the game and get a different challenge each time!

Nice work :)
