Every 10 seconds we flip by Maksim Chugunov

[raw]
made by Maksim Chugunov for Ludum Dare 51 (COMPO)

It's like tetris but every 10 seconds board flips

Controls

  • LEFT
  • RIGHT
  • UP

Goal

Get as many points as possible. Points granted for each shape placed (UP arrow)

Rules

Try to figure out by playing, I tried to make it as intuitive possible, but if you're still confused read on

You drop shapes on a field kind of tetris-like, except you cant rotate them, only shift left or right. In 10 seconds, board flips, and any empty cells become filled and vice versa. Now you drop white shapes instead of black

Your goal is to keep field in equilibrium so you can drop shapes after each flip and get points

Bonus

After each flip there's blinking orb that will make your next shape inverted: it deletes tiles instead of filling them

Drop limit

On each flip, you have to drop N shapes, as indicated by floating orbs left to your shape. If you drop more than N, then N is increased by this amount for next flip. Basically at first you only have to drop 3, but if you've dropped 10, then next time you HAVE TO drop 10 or more. If you've dropped less, then before flipping board, they're all dropped automatically

Fun game, although with the minimum-placement rule + no rotation it feels more unforgiving than regular tetris. I like the swirly Game Over screen. Controls are simple and intuitive. Not sure what's up with rainbow powerups. A solid game overall; I had fun.

Fun game, wish you could turn though. I love the main menu and the sound track especially.

Tetris innovation, super like the concept of the game and really like the minimalist artwork.
However, there are times when I get stuck and have to start over. There are also times when it feels like it gets out of control and you can't manipulate the movement of the blocks. But the overall feeling is great, I played for a long time, trying to find some tricks, but in the end, I could only hit close to 40 points.

I like your game! By far the most innovating I have played thus far

It was a but hard to figureout at first, but after a while I got the hang of it. The graphics are cute and the music is catchy

Really polished and fun game! Simple gameplay with a great twist and really nice art and music to make it feel fun to play.

The tetris fan in me felt quite frustrated with not being able to rotate pieces, but given the twist I think it works.

Fun gameplay, very nice presentation. I was a bit confused about how the game worked at first, probably because it's flipped compared to how you normally play Tetris, but after a bit I got the hang of it. It is pretty unforgiving, I didn't quite figure out why I get more shapes to drop in some cases but I always end up with more than I can place after a while and I can't get a very high score! Good job overall though.

Definitely one of my favorite games I've played from the jam so far. I can see myself accumulating hours on this game on my phone during bus rides and such. Only complain I have is that it can be pretty damn hard to recuperate after getting yourself in a bad situation, but maybe after playing more I would be able to do so. Let me know if you upload it to the app store some day!

HARD

By the way, I found a bug but don't know what exactly caused it - it was right after the timer ended, and I had a piece with the power up effect, and that's all I remember. The screen stayed like that and I couldn't do anything:

I really liked this game :) I wonder how much the game would change if we were able to rotate the pieces like Tetris

A very interesting inversion of Tetris! As others have mentioned, being able to rotate the pieces would be even better! The art, the music, the gameplay, all very well done! Great job!

I can play this game all day. Are you planning to release this on mobile? Cause this is a FANTASTIC puzzler challenge I feel. The need to turn the pieces was immense xD but that's just part of the challenge, isn't it?

@rincs thank you! Everyone seems to want to rotate pieces, and initially I thought it would be part of the challenge, but mostly it's just WAY easier to not give this ability at all haha. It would just create many bugs and in jam setting it's not really what I want.

If I ever was to make it into a full game, I'd have to remake it from scratch since it's a PICO-8 game. But who knows, maybe if I decide I can pull it off in a week, I'll do it, maybe even stream the whole process, could be a fun challenge and content. I'll keep that in mind for sure

@kuviman - nice!

Fun game, the concept was cool - the gaps left when you had L or T shapes set off my OCD somewhat, not being able to rotate haha.

Given the description, "Tetris but the screen rotates", I wasn't expecting so much. BUT this had some unexpected constraints and strategy to it. The inverted colors and swapping blocks for negative space made this _really_ interesting to play. I do agree with others that I wished I could have also rotated blocks, but I'd say that's more of a nit than a complaint (especially for a compo!).

Great job! I'm always pleased with Pico-8 titles :D

Edit: I enjoyed the powerups too! Those very super satisfying.

Really nice twist in tetris, nice graphics and sound, the music is kinda annoying but it does its job. Really fun!

I like not only this simple game but also this platform for which I never developed anything yet. BTW, Game Over screen is awesome! Good job!

I like the sound effects in this game. It took me some time to figure out what the goal is, even after reading the instructions. I am in the habit of thinking in terms of Tetris; the differences in this game threw me off. I think this game is out of my league. Even so, it is a good use of the theme. I like the bitsy graphics and the controls seemed to work smoothly. It’s just something I couldn't really wrap my mind around.
