HMS Inevitable by Frank Gevaerts

[raw]
made by Frank Gevaerts for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

HMS Inevitable is a text adventure, written in inform7.

It’s playable on the web.

There is no graphics or audio in this game, so I opted out of those categories.

I have included a solution (only the commands I typed to get to the end) and a transcript (The commands and the output of the game). This solution is reasonably complete and looks at all the essential things, but do explore on your own!

If you have never played a game like this before, you basically type what you want to do and the game responds. What you need for this particular game:

Looking at things, e.g. “look at rope” or “examine rope”, or the usual short form “x rope”.
Look at everything, including yourself! “look at self” or “look at me”. (Sorry, “yourself” does not work. I noticed this five minutes before the deadline, use “me” or “self”)
Picking things up. “take rope” or “get rope”
Putting things down in specific places. “put rope on table“
Using things. You can type “use rope” or “use rope“
Step on things. “step on thing“
Put things on. “put on sock“ or “wear sock“
Take things off. “take off sock“ or “remove sock“
Turn things. “turn table“
Open things. “open box“

Many other verbs work too. (there are no ropes, socks or tables in this game)

Look at everything, including yourself!

Have a look at the solution or the transcript to make things clear if needed.

Thanks for playing, @sirikan! I'll admit that I sometimes enjoy "interpreting" the theme :)

Tbh, I love your games! For their familiar interface, for their simplicity and for the sense of humor. And all of them are small, but complete stories. And this one is no exception! :)

Hilarious ending! I had a good laugh!

Here's my playthrough, I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for playing, @yngvarr! It's always nice to see what people try, even if sometimes for me it mostly highlights things I could have done better :) Sorry about the weird parser errors yot got for some things, I know exactly what causes them, but I only found out a few hours before the end and I'd have to refactor a fair bit to the issue.

Oooh! I used to dabble little with Inform a few years back.
I liked this game and the difficulty level. I especially liked the questions between every command, revealing a little bit more of the story each time.
Veeery nice with the UNDO command.
Great work!

There may not be much for humor or mood, (via sound/music) but there's always a fantastically written tale with interesting puzzles to tease and think about. I did much better this time and it only took me two run throughs to get the whole thing accomplished. I'm such a good spy! xD Fit the theme perfectly, great work.

Thanks for playing, @commanderstitch! I'm hoping more playtesting before it was finished made this one a bit friendlier than some of my previous games.

Neat little game! I got stuck a few times but figure it out (with your help) in the end! Thanks for the submission! It was fun!

Nice to see a text base adventure, but I'm kinda surprised how many I've seen so far. Good thing they've all been unique experiences. Keep it up!

Thanks for playing, @slecornu! I like doing these even though they always end up a bit buggier than I intended :)

Cool game, I haven't played a text command style like this since early king's quest and wilderness: a survival adventure.

Oh man I actually managed to find the solutions but I did not throw the skin in the right place. Still a cool entry. It was fun playing something different from the usual.

I had initially thought "don't I need to mix cement with stuff to make concrete" but tried pouring the cement on the bollard anyways. I looked a bit prematurely at the solution and felt silly when I realized I was right with my initial hunch! Reading the black text on white background was a little hard on the eyes but overall fun game! Cool concept!

Edit: Does not even need to be a dark mode. Even the light grays of this LD webpage are a lot less straining for my eyes. Changing the background to a soft color off-white would help :)

Thanks for playing @slurpeethief! I'll try to see for next time if there's an easy way to provide a dark mode. It's not something I really notice...

Neat! Been a while since I played one of these text adventures. I did have to look up the solution after a bit of fiddling with the bucket, but I was on the right track! I liked the writing!
