Cheaters never prosper, only the good die young, yadda yadda yadda...but most importantly, the hero always wins. Which is unfortunate, considering you're the villain. But you can last as long as possible before your inevitable demise! Spawn troops and towers in this reimagined take on a tower defense game!

Tutorial

UIMockup-37.png

This is a spin on a traditional tower defense game. The hero comes from the top and his goal is to make it to your evil lair at the end. To place towers, click anywhere there is an orange highlight when you hover over it, and choose what to place at the bottom of the screen. Blue highlights are for placing barriers on the path. Keep an eye on your influence in the top right. Use that to pay for towers and barricades.

The hero will always respawn (because hero’s do that) and it’s your job to last as long as you can.

Controls: Move with W and S, zoom with scroll wheel or Q and E, use your mouse to select spaces and place units! Units can only be placed when a square is selected and when you have enough influence (Currency in the top right)

Special Considerations: There are some balancing issues, meaning the hero may take a bit longer to overwhelm your defenses.

any chance of having a web version?

Really fun game! Love the funny audio and visuals, gameplay is also smooth and enjoyable. I would give some animations to shooting towers, cause you can only see they deal damage by looking at players health. Also maybe more enemies / players / heroes going out at the same time but with less health to make it more interesting? Other than that its really fun. Great work! :D

@velvetlobster Were going to look into it tonight. It’s made with Unreal, so not as easy to do web as something like unity, but we shall see what we’re able to come up with for sure!

@janku We had a simple upgrade system in place that we wanted to expand, but we scrapped it due to time and it was already so hard to balance with the current options, adding upgrades would have made that even harder given the time. Haha we still need to go through and better balance it a bit.

We had animations for the towers and their attacks, however I was having trouble getting them to work due to the way I setup the towers vs the normal NPCs. I’ll get them working in the future. Also we did have plans to add some effects, so you’d be able to see some sort of attack coming off the towers, particles or smoke when things die/respawn, etc. thanks for the feedback!!

GG, nice funny game ! Soundtrack and dialogue are funny, models are good ! i see some buggs in the pathfinding system (monsters stay at their place ) and for the placement of the tower will be more intuitive when i click on the tower i can place it on the field ! BIG GG to the crew !

@castoor A few of the monsters are supposed to stay in place, while others chase the hero wherever he is. We'll make that more clear in future revisions though! And we'll look at adding different options for placing towers, including clicking on the tower first, and potentially dragging and dropping. Thanks for the feedback!

Really fun game! As I said on stream, could have done with being a little more straight forward to understand. Was really fun game and map design . Well done . Voices were great too!

Heres the clip if you wanna watch it back :)

Great fun once I worked out what I was doing. I liked the voice acting, at least until the villain started rambling and all of the voice lines clipped over each other. Great game though!

@heiach the voices overlapping is definitely a bug that I swear I got fixed.. thanks for bringing it up, I’ll have to check it out. The dialogue is something you want to hear one at a time for sure! Hahah

@dannyk1994 we finally got a tutorial image uploaded to the page here, hopefully that will help others understand. A better in game situation was in the plans but time got the better of us with so much else to figure out haha that will for sure be in a further version. Thanks for the feedback!

Really fun idea! Wish there was a way to demolish towers - I totally frontloaded the map with wisp spawners that were pretty ineffective as time went on, so the gameplay was a little slow. Maybe a speed up button? Tower defense games are really gratifying when you can speed up the process and see your placement work really come into effect.

@chris-pugliese thanks for the feedback! That is a great idea for sure. Destroying towers is also something we have on the list for post jam. The game also needs a bit more balancing and tuning, It’s surprisingly difficult to balance a game, even as simple as what we made, especially when you do it in the last hour while also trying to fix last bugs haha thanks for playing!

The game is fun but I am unable to see the end, if there is any. Seems like the heros strength scales linear? In a Tower defense game you probably want a spheric curve for the waves, so they get 1.5 times as strong each wave instead of +10 health. I let the game play for half an hour and the heros still die at the very same spot. Or maybe the scaling bugged out?

I have about 45k coins to spend and way, way more towers down the road which are not required as the hero never get's that far. And then a full area where I haven't built a single tower or anything. If I would build all of that the game would have a duration of several weeks I assume.

Voice Acting is very cool and funny, overall design looks good but could enhance the gameplay with more animations. Hero stepping on spikes or affected by poison areas, hero getting hit by bullets. The things where the description says that they explode could explode with some particles, the hero could visually show his damage with a shader that reveals scars or by spawning arrows in his body, minions could jump on the way.

I know, I know, limited time. My advice would be to go for a way smaller map next time (whatever game you might make in the next jam, most will have a map tho) and use the bonus time for gameplay VFX/Particles/Animations/Balancing.

Nevertheless, I had fun with it, liked it overall and hope to see you all again at the next jam :D

@leorid Thanks for the feedback! We echo a lot of the things you suggested, most were on the plans, but time of course got in the way haha With only two main people working on it, it can get out of hand quickly haha The size of the map actually wasn't that big of a time sink, a lot of it came down to getting all the mechanics working properly, including adding all the animations and voices that we did manage to somehow get out haha lot's of moving parts and we had to scrap our entire upgrade system towards the end. Particle effects/VFX was a really big thing I really really wanted to get in, but too many bugs at the end made it impossible to get to unfortunately, I do agree heavily that would have really improved it overall.

As far as the hero scaling, he should be scaling 1.8 times each death, so you may have had a bug, or you were just really good at the game haha. It's designed so that after about 5-6 deaths he should start to really get powerful and really hard to beat. I do feel our biggest downfall at the moment is the balancing, it takes way more work to balance than we anticipated, so that needs some tweaks for sure. Thanks for the feedback again!

Fun spin on the tower defense genre! Definitely meets the theme of the jam for sure, and I'm always a fan of playing the bad guy. I did have some trouble selecting tiles to place units/obstacles, I found myself having to click several times before the build menu would pop up. This is great groundwork for something really cool!

@pwnofprophecy thank you for the feedback! It may have been that you didn’t have enough influence. The influence you have shows at the top right, and the placeable items are only visible when you have enough to purchase them.

Hi! I played your game on my stream today so some things were already discussed. Most issues I had can be connected to poor communication. But that's is something that is hard to gauge without playtesting from other, and that's where all the people come for :)

After trial and error at some point I understood the game a bit. I liked different towers and buildings and how they work. Rarely you can see towers that send units across whole map. Probably with some time and trying different builds I would be able to stop level 4 hero. A nice surprise for me was a long map, that's something new for me in the genre.

The humorous switch from hero to villain was a nice touch. The hero can't be hated even if he makes me lose the game, not with that quips and HUZZZAAAH :)

Overall good job! :european_castle:

Thanks for bringing your game by my stream for feedback! If you’d like to revisit the play and commentary you can view the highlight at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1448039289 (WINE) and https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1448957641 (Linux native)

I enjoyed the humor of the game quite a bit, and your models were lovely. I would have appreciated some more transparency of the game mechanics. An ability to read tower abilities while paused, right there in the UI, would really help the on-ramping, letting the player associate it with the UI slots.

man it's difficult, but I enjoyed it, a decent tactic early seems to be to space out and spam the little wisps and put towers where they attack the hero one by one, the dart towers are the real damage dealers. The healer didn't really seem to do anything, by the time you need him even your big guys get oneshot by the hero.

08. Apr 2022 · 01:57 UTC
@raptor851 thanks for playing! We really ramped up the difficulty for the Jam so it didn’t take forever to lose, since most probably don’t want to spend forever on any one game. Haha

Everything needs a bit more turning for sure, but I agree the healer needs the most. We reduced his heal ability to once every three seconds, which is really not enough for later. We want to add some upgrades and things that would help you last long and let it keep being enjoyable.

Thanks again for playing!!

Like others said, quite difficult but interesting use of the theme in a funny universe. I liked the idea to send big waves of minions against a single guy, it's like a boss fight X tower defense mashup.
The idea could easily be extended if you'd like to continue working on the game: different heroes with unique capacities, sevaral ways to generate influence, new buildings, upgrades, drawing path in the map, etc.
Good job overall!

@ldp thanks for the feedback! I like the idea of having multiple hero’s. Maybe the option to choose a hero to defend against, or an option to spawn a random hero on death, etc. that would make it a bit more interesting for sure. Upgrades are absolutely something we want, we had them planned, alongside other towers and unit, that got scrapped due to time haha but we are excited to build it out and hopefully get something a little more full out there.

Although I'm really bad at the TD games I like to play them and It's great to see a TD entry at LD

The dialogue of the villian is very funny and the TD gameplay feels great. The UI is very self explanatory and the tooltips are helpful. As I stated before I'm not good at TD games and was soon overrun by the hero but I had lots of fun playing :)

Overall a great entry - good job!

That is way too good! Graphics are very pleasant, music is quite catchy and the dialogs... beyond perception. There were some bugs with hero coming throught obstacles and starting to hit them afterwards, but it was still perfectly playable. Hope, you'll make it into a full outside-of-a-jam game!

@jul-li Yeah, the way the movement and path are generated doesn’t work extremely well with the obstacles haha but I didn’t want to try to change it when we got towards the end. I for sure want to fine tune that for a post jam version though!

Nice idea with the monologue at the start of the game  The UI is good,I knew what to do, only thing I'd add is some projectile for towers, as the only indicator that hero's taking damage is his healthbar. Good entry!

Pretty fun little game, however I think my high score was only 3 heroes killed, so either I'm just bad, or the difficulty curve is pretty wicked. Still, played it multiple times, so there's probably something here :)
🎤 Link270
19. Apr 2022 · 16:04 UTC
@rubixnoob13 In tests we found it was really easy at first to just keep going and not lose for quite a while, which for the amount of stuff we were able to get in made it get boring pretty quickly. So we bumped up the difficulty a lot, the hero doubles in power each death haha This made it a bit more fun for a jam entry since you could play for a few minutes, die, then try again and not have to spend a ton of time on it unless you really wanted to keep going. I think I only ever got to 3 hero's killed as well, and getting past about four is the farthest I've seen. hah Thanks for playing!

Good sound and very addictive gameplay. I also like the title because this topic is very close to me. In college, I wrote a research paper and read a lot of good information at https://sunnypapers.com/paper-samples/hero/ from professional writers. Although we are used to the fact that heroes often win in books and films, in the real world, this is not at all the case. Thanks for making this game!
