Jam Fall by StaticBits

[raw]
made by StaticBits for Ludum Dare 49 (COMPO)

This was my very first game jam! I was super nervous and excited for this. Hopefully you'll enjoy it, even with my horrible art!

Jam Fall

(no, not the game jam kind of jam)

You're a conscious jar of jam. Shelves are disappearing around you (and reappearing, although you don't know why), and the floor has turned to lava... Try to stay alive for as long as possible as you witness the deaths of the other lifeless jars of jam!

The other jars on the shelves are purely for decoration, and to taunt you if you're below one :P.

Controls

Use the arrow keys or WASD to control your jar of jam.

Menu Options

Press "PLAY" at the top to play. Change the difficulty between 6 difficulties! View your previous score and the high score of the difficulty currently selected below that.

Scoring

Every second is worth 10 points. The highest scores of each difficulty are automatically saved to highscores.txt.

Things Used

  • Programming language: Python with Pygame
  • IDE: VSCode
  • Sound effects: SFXR

Difficulty Levels

  • 1: Nobody Mode - You can literally afk between two platforms and get like 8 minutes
  • 2: Beginner Mode - The difficulty is ramping up! But not by much currently
  • 3: Intermediate Mode - This is the default difficulty, it provides a normal level of difficulty
  • 4: Hard Mode - Slightly harder than Intermediate Mode
  • 5: Harder Mode - This is where the difficulty really goes up! This one is challenging to get a score of 1000 on. You'll have to learn how to jump over gaps in the platforms!
  • 6: Impossible Mode - Uhhh, this one is just, well, read the name

DISCLAIMER:

I did NOT make the font used. It's a "No rights reserved" CC0 font called "Monogram", linked here: https://itch.io/t/214662/monogram-a-free-monospace-pixel-font

BUG FIXES MADE AFTER RELEASE

  • High scores (Best) not properly calculating. If you got a score that was lower than the actual best score, it would still overwrite your previous high score.

TO PLAY

  • Click on the download link below
  • Extract the files from the .zip file
  • Run JamFall.exe
  • Enjoy! (Hopefully)

Really fun, especially considering this is your first game jam! You should be really proud!

Really neat game. I liked the choice of difficulty, (low level games I found you could sit across two platforms and just never fall) the high difficulty ones were challenging. The sound effects added a lot, great game for a first jam!

I Liked the Graphics. Loved the Lava.

Jam and Lava? Why not! This is such a cute, silly, well-constrained game! I liked playing on the hardest difficulty and seeing the chaos ensue. Was pretty happy to get over 200 on it! Nice job!

Cool! Really neat game! I like the art!

Maybe you would have liked to allow the player to jump high enough to come back on higher platforms? Or maybe with a powerup or something? The highest difficulty is too hard and the lower ones are too easy x)

Other than that you nailed the controls. Great idea to make lifeless props around the player too! And you put sounds in your first game jam, so that's a really great work!

Smooth control which I'm really glad and comfortable with. the game felt like a mini-game without any meaning. the graphic was really neat! I like the visual and the concept which is really challenging.

Hi and congrats for your first jam game! It's a fun little game, but I think you can build upon it a lot and introduce a little bit more variety. Regards!

Fun game, the difficulty really ramps up! Had a really lucky run in the highest difficulty where I managed to get a 283 -- all my other attempts barely reached 100. Great job!

Interesting game, I had fun trying to cheese it a little bit by putting the jar between two platforms but in the end that still only got me so far on difficulty 5 / 6 :)

Congratulations on a great first entry! Sometimes simple games like this can be the most amusing. I really liked that you had the difficulty settings - I found 3 too easy, 4 was easily beatable, and 5 was a good solid challenge. (6 was as you stated, haha)

Also for what it's worth the graphics on this were one of my favorite parts - they're simple but effective. Definitely a lot better than I did in my first compo!

This could definitely be fun to expand on - thanks for a fun entry.

Impossible is really impossible...

If I try to run it, I get "api-ms-win-core-path-l1-1-0.dll is missing" and than "error loading python.dll..." - the temp folder doesn't contain the api-ms... dll, trying to place it in the folder with the game doesn't help - so what I need to install to get it running?

@shigor Are you on Windows? A possible solution would be to clone the repository from GitHub and build it yourself with Python and Pygame.

Nice game - a very complete experience for a compo entry - especially your first! Graphics are nice, level 3 felt a little too easy

Great game! I love the idea of actual jam being part of the game. And the main menu and persistent high scores were impressive to have for a compo game.

Great job, especially for a first game jam! I thought the mechanic was really clever and a good balance of panicky fun. Also, I don't think your art is horrible like you've said lol, it's actually very clear, colorful and communicates what's happening in the game very easily. I think if anything the background could be a little less busy. I like the different difficulty levels a lot.

Very nice little game, in my opinion, it's core mechanic is quite solid. My congratulations with the first JAM entry.

Pour one out for all of my lost jam friends :pensive: really nice game! nice loop, nice art style, and you do a really good job selling the weight of the jars with the sound design.
