Captain Dinohater by Kartik Kini

[raw]
made by Kartik Kini for Ludum Dare 49 (JAM)

3mofS7.png (WebGL Disclaimer: performance can be bad depending on your PC, and mouse sensitivity will be very high) You're Captain Dinohater and you guessed it- you hate dinos. Wield your unstable weaponry within an unstable volcano to defeat the bane of your existence and uphold the promise of your family name. Blast as much as you can before your guns explode, then THROW THEM FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE.

Play with Mouse & Keyboard OR gamepad. Weapons become more unstable the more you use them, throw them when they become too unstable and they will explode! The level itself is unstable and constantly shifting, with procedural level design constantly pushing you around the mouth of the volcano.

Threw a perfectly good gun at a band of marauding space-dinos and ran into the lava. 10/10

In my opinion the control with the mouse was too rigid, otherwise, the game seems cool. Well done!!

I played this game for 20 minutes straight, it was so arcady, fun and addicting, the sound and graphic design make shooting/hitting the dinos super satisfying. Some top tier work here!

The best game by FAR that I have played, and maybe even one of the best game of the Jam! This Rocks!
The way the every single gun has a descriptive feel, the way kill combos can be stacked up when your gun over heats, its all feels SOOOO good! You have a Doom competitor your hands! Simply Amazing work!

My high score is 9850!

You guys crushed this! I am floored by how much you were able to develop in such a short period of time! The controls felt tight, the shooting feedback was great, and in general, the game was super fun :)!!

While the aiming felt a little off, I can't deny how much fun this was! Everything had so much feedback; the visuals were great; and the gunplay felt tight. Add some more movement options in, and maybe fine-tune the controls a little more, and you could have a wonderful little arcade shooter on your hands!

Awesome job, everyone!

Thanks for the review Tom, glad you enjoyed it! Would you mind clarifying what felt off about the aiming to you? Also what controller layout were you using? This kind of feedback would be super helpful for us going forward!

This is so fun to play! Nice job!

I love how the weapons feel so different to one another. The shotgun in particular just feels great to use.

This game is extremely fun, to the point you lose track of time. Please develop this further, this is my favorite entry!

The sheer chaos permeating everything adds so much to the experience. Once moment you’ll have a gun you like, the next you’ll be tossing it away and jumping up a magma geyser to kick a pterodactyl because obviously that’s what you do with pterodactyls.

Veeeery cool game! Loved the theming and the style of the game—I could definitely see a line forming for this at an arcade! The different weapons were very interesting, and the unstable mechanic of the floor you're on definitely adds some spice to the gameplay too. I'll also add to the list of people who were a bit overwhelmed by the aim sensitivity initially, but the handy menu slider took care of that. Do you have any plans for future updates to this game? It seems like it would be eve more fun with some more levels or dino variety! Great job. If only *I* could jump that high if I were to touch lava.

I liked how the dinos were wearing space helmets.

Absolute favorite entry so-far, this was just so much fun to play! (Please add an option to disable the camera rotation on death, that made me SO motion-sick, and unfortunately, it's easy to die suddenly before I can shut my eyes)

Doing something so wrong never felt so right. I would never want to kill any dinosaurs, especially ones so remarkable cute as the ones you created. I am sure that I will revisit this game after the jam. Would love to see this game expanded aswell!
Only gripe I have is that the game can get very hard to read with the rapid changes of the stage and effects and bullets flying around.

This is amazing. I love the exploding weapons; fill dinos full of holes then blow them up by throwing your gun in their faces.

Played with gamepad, felt pretty good to me, amazingly the WebGL version seemed to work perfectly well. Great fun take on the retro shooter style. Overall felt very polished. Visuals all felt pretty coherent like a lost gem from the N64 era, music also fit the style nicely. Only critiscism I could think of is, I could have used some health packs, I never saw any.. and maybe some more sense of progression but for 72H I can't really complain. Great work

If my HP recovers when I eat dino meat doesn't it make me dino lover rather than hater?

Just thinking out loud...

Great game though, you have a little great retro FPS here. I love the fact that I can just throw a gun towards incoming enemies. Everything feels in place here. Great job!

This was super fun. The variety of weapons is really impressive and them becoming unstable is a great mechanic to make you use all of them instead of just your favorite one. The movement feels satisfying too though I noticed far too late that there is a double jump. I liked how new enemies/layout-things were introduced for quite a while but in my second playthrough I got to ~12000 points and stopped there because it didn't seem like the game was getting any harder from there. The fact that health packs only drop when you are below 50% health (I think) is interesting and incentivizes risky play where you intentionally take damage, let multiple health packs drop and then pick them up at once which I think is cool. Everything just works really well together here!

Great job!

A good FPS with an unusual aesthetic and a futurist mood. I liked the graphics - something which reminds me my old N64. Colors are gorgeous. Controls work well as expected and the main gameplay fits with the theme. I Had fun playing. Hard and addictive. Well done ++

Very cool game! I loved the idea that both the weapons and the environment are unstable. You managed to do really a lot of work on this game. The only thing I didn't like was the control with the mouse, I tried to change the mouse sensitivity and play the game couple times but no setting felt very good (it was either too fast or too snappy).

@flying-basement-studio Glad you liked it! If the controls are still feeling choppy after tweaking the mouse sensitivity settings, maybe try downloading the game instead of playing the web browser version? The latter can be a bit inconsistent in terms of lag.
