Overview

There are a bunch of ants living in your computer keyboard! Smoosh them all by typing words using the letters they're hiding under. Hopefully you weren't working on anything important?

Everything made by me for the Compo!

  • Engine: Python with PyGame Community Edition
  • Web Port: PygBag
  • Graphics: Paint.NET
  • Music: MuseScore, Audacity
  • Sound Effects: Audacity, SFXR, a bugle I had lying around that I don't know how to play

If you're getting audio issues in the browser version, try the Windows download!

Also, I'm making a real game!

It's a deckbuilding roguelike with a unique, geometry-based resource system similar to my LD52 entry, Fallowtide! There's not a Steam page up quite yet, but you can join the Discord server by clicking the banner below.

Amazing. The intermissions where you read the letters you write are the icing on the cake. I don't play too many word games, but this is absolutely one of my favorites.

Here's a recording of my run. Great game!

Music is a bop! Even after playing I still catch myself whispering "ants!" every now and then.

Had to laugh when the first letter was shown.

~~and I sure am glad that I recently got a new keyboard or this would have unlocked a new fear haha~~

Really cool entry!

LOL! "Run infestation" that really got me!
I enjoyed every single bit of this game. It's a real solid game. Super nice graphics, it makes your brain work. I would have loved it to track the high score to brag about with other players, if I really have to find something missing

Very well done!

Really fun game, the dictionary felt a little limiting at times though (*yoyo* :cold_sweat:)

This was the score for my first run, I look forward to challenging any other highscores that pop up :P

Excellent as usual! The red ants were particularly challenging.

The upgrades that allow you to make longer words are extremely useful, almost necessary imo.

Amazing - what a great concept. Really loved the way all the typed words ended up on the company memo in between rounds. Excellent work for a compo, really impressed with the all-round polish and attention to detail. I'll have to check out PyGame - the engine I use is over 12 years old now and not supported. :sob:

Poor ants! The idea is fun (I hope it's not based on real events?? sounds scary!) but looks like my knowledge of English language is not enough to play much of it... I failed in the very beginning, on the 2nd word - it has to have x p l m in it and it's only 1 word with 5 letters in it?? I have no idea what it could be xD

Amazing game! I'm really bad at these kind of games + not a native speaker but I still enjoyed it a lot. Feedback are great, graphics are beautiful. It's a great take on the theme and a nice twist on word games. A run is maybe a bit too long imo.
Fantastic work!

Seriously amazing in every way, especially impressive given it was a compo game. Really well done!

This is genuinely so much fun. It's charming, infinitely replayable, unbelievably polished, and has such clever design. The intermission recaps are hilarious every time, and the upgrades scratch such an itch in my lizard brain.

Really awesome work once again. I look forward to your submissions every Jam, and you knock it out of the park every time.

This is definitely a fun take on the typing game, where your vocabulary knowledge is challenged. Hope you can get a full version on Steam or such, with more language packs than you can shake a stick at.

Wow, I don't even know what to say...

This game is just... amazing. Seriously, it's incredibly polished with fantastic art and music. The concept of a typing game with ants on the keys that you have to kill was surprisingly satisfying to play. Top-notch work!

Pretty fun game! I'm really glad there wasn't a hard time limit as sticking to low letter count words was harder than expected. I did notice on my second run that just choosing the bomb upgrades and repeating the same words over and over to get the max time bonus seemed like an easy cheesy way to get a decent score. Overall great job!

I have only one big remark: this game is too addictive to keep a healthy sleep. Also is there a way to keep the ants somewhere safe? :stuck_out_tongue: Really well done and very fun game. I had/have a blast with it.

That was sooo goooooooood! I had lots of fun! The idea is great, I loved the humor, the time constraint was just right (but not punishing), next time I WILL drink the coffee!

I kind of love typing games, and this one is pretty unique. Reminds me of the old Tontie games from Eyezmaze. The sound effects and screenshake are perfect.

"Kiosks" is now one of my favorite words. High score --

Hey I loved the game. At first I thought you were just going to have to mash the letters the ants were on but having it be words is so much better! I thoroughly enjoyed playing! I liked the graphics and the music they set the right mood. The multipliers, bonusses and so on really added to the fun and gave the game some juice. It only seemded the k-bombs werent working for me. Or at elast I didnt see that they did anything. Overall great job. Especially for the compo! Really fun game.

@jeremy-ryan technical question. I have been trying to export my pygame game using pybag but I keep getting the error "no module named scipy". I am using scipy but when making a simple test program without scipy and removing scipy from my environement it still gives the same error. I am using conda environments. Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong?

I'm disappointed "gamejam" is not in the dictionary... Really great game! Audio just rocks. Coming up with words was fun and challenging, but I didn't feel like I got punished, generally had fun all throughout. My final score was 33650. I didn't actually notice the story while playing, but upon assembling my letters together... I love it!

Super well made. I had tons of fun. Unfortunately I suck at figuring out words, so no relevant highscore from me :D

Wow. Another very impressive submission! I loved the way each different type of ant made you really have to think. The upgrades for scores was really interesting and to top off the great ant gameplay along with upgrades, it has a hilarious little story using the words that was typed.

I've always liked your submissions since 11th Hour, and I have to say you continue to impress me and I continue to pretty much look up to you and your work. It's always fun seeing what you have in store for a jam and reading your follow up posts. Excellent job!

[P.S. Thanks for the inadvertent shout-out of our game Wink and the Fae with your gif showcasing your game haha]

This was one of my favorite games, although somehow I got this score on my second run and have gotten worse results ever since 😅

The only thing that stops the game from being perfect is that it still gives one round of "choose an upgrade" at the end, when the upgrades won't do anything (although the fact that one of the upgrades was just coffee tells me that this may be intentional somehow).

I liked this a lot, a typing game with elements inspired by roguelikes is very innovative. I'd pay for a full edition that iterated on this concept. Very well done!

Amazing game! I wasn't smart enough to think of the work "kiosks", so socks were my main weapon. "Headhunt" also quite good when h-bomb is unlocked. I'm not a native speaker, so it was quite hard!

This is awesome! It's surprisingly hard to think of words that have double letters... I liked all the variety in different types of ants and the incremental powerups added a lot of replayability

I have to say I kind of expected the game to go on until I lost, in roguelike style, rather than proceeding for a certain number of rounds. But I guess I'm not sure what the lose condition could be, haha.

The way it included the words you typed at the end of each round into a letter was really cute and creative.

Well done!

40150 and a cup of coffee!

Pretty excellent! I didn't really understand how points were being calculated but I had a fun time. Or, as I said to my boss, "spooky spooky spooky spooky".

Phenomenal game to churn out in 48 hours. Great music, great graphics, cool gameplay idea, really polished, just the right length and difficulty ramp up.

I felt like a bit of a psychopath when my second paragraph repeated the word "killers" a few too many times..
