Time: Cardmancer by LDJam user 298475

[raw]
made by LDJam user 298475 for Ludum Dare 51 (JAM)

Ten seconds → one round, using cards to manipulate time and character attacks. 1.png Both the player and the enemy switch their actions(attack\defense) according to the timeline, however, please note that your next action is not directly determined by you, but is manipulated by a random timeline. 2.png
Fortunately, you can change your fate by playing cards that change the order of the timeline and the length of the status! O brave man, use your wisdom and courage to keep moving forward in one ten-second after another! (Drag and drop cards onto the character) 3.png
4.png

There are now a total of 8 types of cards. 1. Fast: designate a character to speed up their current status behavior (monster or player) 2. Slow: designate a character to slow down their current status behavior (monster or player) 3. Expand: Extends the player's current status behavior to the next status 4. Reverse-Expand: make the player's next status behavior extend to the current status 5. Steal: Swap the current status behavior of both the enemy and the player. 6. Cut: Make a player's future status overwrite the current status and cancel the behavior of that future status 7. Copy: Make a player's future status overwrite the current status, but keep the behavior of that future status 8. Exchange: makes a future status of the player exchange with the current status

it feels like i can defeat every enemy by keeping attacking them , and both the other two status seemed a little needless. Interesting no matter how!

It is an interesting combat system, but may need a tutorial to understand. Once I got it, it was pretty fun, nice game!

as there are only 3 stages it was cool that it wasnt that easy to find out every mechanic... this way gameplay lasted a while !

Took a second to understand, but really interesting take on the theme and I don't think I've ever played anything like it! Great job!

The game feels like a actual game good job !

Everything is so well made, the art, the music, the sound design !

The game is really fun even if I need to admit that the card system is not that easy to understand. A good knowledge of the cards is required to play correctly.

Overall I had a lot of fun playing your game, good job :)

really nice idea but i think some cards need a little more explanation or something. Nonetheless great design and execution of your idea!

I absolutely love the concept, card games with a twist is kind of my weak point.
Some thoughts:
- The art is simply amazing.
- It's a bit confusing what the cards do, hard to read so many text in the middle of the battle

Fantastic little game, I love this sort of thing. Looked great but was difficult to learn, I played it multiple times though and got the hang of it. I'll probably come back and play this one again

@gonzalol Thanks for playing! Indeed, I also think that the game's tutorial and graphics presentation could be improved. For time reasons, I didn't make the tutorial more detailed, but I listed the role of the cards in the game's introduction.

@lorwon Thanks for playing! But in terms of pixel art and music we have to thank the quality free resources <3

Cool game! Loved the sounds, loved the art and I loved the gameplay. At first it was a bit confusing as to how the game worked (as with all LD games), but I really feel like I began to understand the rules. I feel like it had that basic strategy-game concept "simple concept, easy to become advanced" and that was really cool!

Good job!

The style and mood feel great, and I really want to love it... but it's difficult to understand what's going on. I think a bit more visual feedback with some of the cards would help with that. I felt like the 2x speed and 1/2 speed weren't even doing anything. Not sure what was happening, but that definitely made it a lot less fun when those take up half my deck choices.

The concept is a unique take on the card-battler games though, and it could easy be polished and expanded on. Thanks for submitting!

@cypheus Thanks for the playing! Actually 2x speed and 1/2 speed is used to change the frequency of the character when attacking, you can use it on the player or the enemy. Regarding the guide, I admit that it could be improved, and it might be helpful to check our list of card effects on the introduction page. Thanks again for the feedback!

Really interesting concept. I didnt understand exactly what was going on at first but I figured it out and was challenging balancing out when to attack and defend and changing altering abilities randomly. Thought the art was neat and the music fit really well. Nice job!

fun concept that really plays on the final fantasy vibe! The animations make the game feel really polished and the soundtrack was a great fit. If i were to nitpick on one thing, (and this is probably only my personal opinion) it is mixing a pixel artstyle with a crispy clean UI causes the two separate art styles to be at odds with each other a little bit. Other than that the mechanics are really solid, and the game is fun! Great work!

Positives:
* good art;
* good sound;
* interesting idea;
* nice animated UI elements.

Negatives:
* the sound slider doesn't save so the music starts blasting at full volume when the game starts (but at least you tried to add options unlike me :,) )
* Would have liked the time periods to have been longer so that I have more time to think, but I liked that the time slowed down when picking a card - nice touch.

The presentation is very good. Loving the banger music and graphics are great all around.
On the UI side the the menu buttons and white text blended a bit to the background.

Combat in itself feels fairly simple but the pace makes it harder to grasp of all the cards and their functionalities. It feels pretty fun nonetheless. I would probably try placing both character bars next to each other or make the enemy one bigger and thus clearer.

Windows package was corrupted when I tried to download it.
The web build hides player information slightly on the left. Full screen would have been appreciated, as well, to ingest all the pixels.

Great work.

wow the pixel art work done here is incredible! I really like the blurred out background, it had that tilt shift photography feel, that's a really nice touch. I think the description of what the cards was just a tad hard to read, especially since it's on the right side, but there was so much information in the middle (timing, cards..) Maybe some time before the time started to get to know those cards would be helpful! Really cool game :D

If you plan on expanding it, please make an interactive tutorial about the game mechanics. It took me way to long to get started and I think I would have put the game down if it wasn't a game jam
After that, it was a great game.

Cool entry, the mechanic is quite confusing at first but quite clever. I like the art and the retro music fits the mood of the game. Good job!

Very cool concept and I hope to see more done with it!

Some of the cards were too confusing to tell what they did (reverse extend was a bit confusing). Also, victory was pretty much random as I relied too much on 'steal' or '2x' and got a bit flustered to try anything too strategic. 'Cut' made sense, while 'Copy' and 'Swap' were a bit too difficult to plan out in the moment.

Maybe if the time bar was moving slower or if there was more opportunity to train.

Anyways, for a jam, this was done great! Very well polished!

Great mechanics, but I found the first fight to be too hard though and didn't even manage to beat it.

Really cool concept that needs to be took further. It's a really hard balance for strategy combining a card game that would usually require long turns and a lot of planning with the pressure of a real time game loop, but I think it was done really well here. If you polished the game up and added more I could definitely see this becoming a full game I and others would buy. Great job!

That's a cool idea to make a card game work. We were planning on making one as well but couldn't figure out a ten second mechanic that we liked.
Took me quite some time to finish the first level and I still feel like I'm misplaying so much. Could be a little bit slower for my taste but it adds to the frantic nature of slinging cards around.
Would have loved to have more ways to mess with my opponent. Just being able to play all the cards onto them as well would have already been nice.

Live, turn based game are awesome. I love the way we could steal turns to the monster. I had hard time to understands at the begining, but finally I understood and finished the 3 levels

Pretty well made game, its a very interesting and original concept that's fun to play with and fits the theme really well. its a bit difficult to tell the different between the actions though, what's the difference between the yellow shield and the normal one? besides that, its fairly well polished and it'd be fun to see it taken further.

This is quite a fun game once you understand what you are doing! The graphics and sound are really nice. I'm not sure about how the states influence gameplay. My strategy was to just maximize attacking, which led to winning the game. Maybe you could slow the progression a bit down and show the effects of the different states. Also I would suggest to enlarge the state bars, since they are the area that is looked at most of the time. And I would change the font color on the rules screen, since the contrast with the background is quite low. All in all you made a game that is pretty, works nicely and feels quite polished. Good job!

Interesting and quite unique mechanic! It's a bit weird to have to carefully think about your next move while acting fast, but it works. Good work!
