Grip of the Abyss by LDJam user 407524

[raw]
made by LDJam user 407524 for Ludum Dare 57 (COMPO)

Small game about a submarine maintenance technician who struggles to keep the sub intact as it submerges deeper and deeper into the ocean.

Tutorial: Press E to interact with objects. Refill oxygen tank when it runs out (machines have indicators). When supply station has filled oxygen tank (it starts with filled tank), oxygen doesn't run out. Pipes might get excessive pressure in them, use valve to release it (press E) before submarine collapses. Junction boxes might get a shortcut, fix them (press E) before engine fails.

at first I didn't understand what to do, but as soon as I realized the game opened up and pulled me in for a few runs, very beautiful art and great sounds respect

Perfect game. All aspects are well done: unusual gameplay, good graphics and sounds. 10/10 ![Снимок экрана 2025-04-07 163521.png](///raw/39b/16/z/6a21c.png)

poor guy is just destined to die. bro needs to work on his repair skills

Latest score 189. Not much, but it was an honest work :) I like the visuals and overall mood, walking could be a little faster/fluent, though. But it was nice, relaxing... at least at the beginning. Then everything went bad... :D

I love the graphics and you really start feeling the stress as you go deeper and everything starts breaking haha

Looks great, plays well, and sounds good. Difficulty ramps up really fast but takes a while to get there and I wish there was a bit more of an indicator that you're getting deeper (the ship falling apart helps but a depth indicator or some diegetic effect would be cool).

ps: two tries and got 220

Pretty fun game, I very much enjoyed the hectic "just keep things runing" feeling. Maybe beacaus it reminded me how we do things at work

I wish there was a way to see your progress before dying, like the outside changing a little, or a distance gauge you could use.

I got 200 meters deep. Hopefully not that bad, especially considering the fact that I wasn't that sure if I was doing everything correctly.

I really love the design of the submarine of the game over screen, it absolutely kicks ass! Great sound effects, and graphics look very nice too. Maybe I would welcome more explanation, but on the other hand, it's also part of the fun to figure things out. And it's gonna be the for the best that I will never be in charge of submarine.

Fun game with great pixel art. I think it would be better if everything was sped up just a bit to really increase the frantic nature.

The game started and I was like "Oh, this is manageable", and the CHAOS and everything going down at once. Great game, love the art!

I absolutely loved how the game starts off easy and then quickly ramps up the chaos as oxygen runs low and systems fail. I was in a fun kind of panic trying to keep everything together! Amazing job capturing that feeling of desperation!

Scored more than 227 points. The game was hooked, the graphon was cool, but I really missed making some background music, it was pretty boring without it

Thanks everyone for the thoughs and feedback! There are a few aspects i knew i needed to work on, such as lack of music, no progress indication, better tutorial, but unfortunately I ran out of time. Thank you all for playing!

Really like the graphics! Took me a minute to realize I needed to move the oxygen supply around, I thought it was endlessly working for a bit haha.

The graphics are really beautiful, it lacks a small score counter to know where we are ;)

The graphics are really nice, but for some reason the scaling is really weird on my pc, making it really hard to see.

Очень классный арт. Хорошие звуки и атмосфера. Немного не хватило геймплея и истории. Отличная работа!)

Loved the building tension in this. It started out almost mindlessly easy, but eventually became close to impossible. I ended up with a score of 251 - I'm sure I could have done a little better, but I'm not confident it would have been possible to continue on much further. Things were going wrong a lot faster than my walk speed would allow me to fix them. In that way, I don't think this game works very well as a high-score chaser... but as a standalone experience, I quite enjoyed it. Good work.

The gameplay is pretty simple. I really liked all the metallic sounds, they are really satisfying! As for the electric sound and the alarm sound - they came off a bit annoying and maybe too loud. Overall, nice game!
