Scaphander's Mine by Colisan

[raw]
made by Colisan for Ludum Dare 57 (COMPO)

title.png

You play as the Depth Scaphanger, sent deep beneath the surface to mine some precious treasures.... but down there, the fauna is hostile, to say the least.

Death is a matter of minutes.

Alone with the whole mining platform, and your own comparatively smaller (but O mightier) drill, dodge anglerfishes and muray eels, build around, and claim the highest score among the depth-divers... Don't show yourself too talented though, some say there are ancient monsters sleeping down there!

This is an exigent tryhard scoring game. Expect to die a lot, and get better each time!

Controls

  • Move using [WASD/ZQSD/arrows]
  • Aim with the mouse (no need to click, the drill is auto-mining)
  • [Click/F/E] to build a block

build.gif

Help

Fetch treasures to gain score. Your score is displayed on the first counter on the mining platform, your building materials are on the second, and your current depth is on third.

Muray eels will rush on you if you break their nest, be ready to dodge! Anglerfishes will happily corner you in the cliff, don't forget to spend some time in the open to ensure safety. Finally, the bombs... well, just don't hug them.

About the game

The aesthetics are inspired by my own thalassophobia, hoping to make you feel a bit of it 😘

Made in 48h, alone and from scratch, for the 57th Ludum Dare. The theme was "Depths".

Tools used: Clickteam Fusion 2.5+, Aseprite, BFXR, Ableton Live, Audacity... No AI.

Made entirely live on my Twitch.tv channel, sadly no devlog this time: the recordings were lost in twitch's no-vod new policy...

This game looks and feels amazing. Love it! Everything matches up so nicely and the (I assume shader) to create the underwater effect is so nice. Thank you so much for making this. Note, the link to your twitch channel redirects to your moderator view, you should edit that ;)

@JavaSaurus Thanks for playing and the nice feedback! I'm a bit worried not to see your name in the online leaderboard, did it bug? 😟

Oh ! I am en route right now, but i can try again when i get home! Dont worry, leaderboards are in my eyes not gamefeatures, so you should can fix it in post for sure!

@colisan I just ran it again, is it possible it was because I was playing without unzipping the files? It should give a score of 39 now :) I remembered another little point I wanted to raise earlier, it's nothing big but usually when I make a game with a leaderboard I try to use seeded random, so everyone gets the same playfield! This game is on top of my list for sure :)

@JavaSaurus I'm relieved, thanks a huge lot for taking the time to give it another go! :relieved:

About the seeded random, I choose not to for replayability's sake. But I always balance the randomness **a lot** by using bags, scaling on skill, and such... So that in the short term luck matters, but in the long term it doesn't! =)

Very interesting take! I started seeding randoms since I made a small game for my channel where people could win a prize and complaints started rolling in that some people had an easier level :p But I like your approach a lot more when you consider replayability, especially in a situation like this where 1-3 minutes gameplay is usually what people give to judge a game.

Aaaah my yearly addiction dose! Glad to see another great entry from you for this jam!
Love the eery ambiance overall, the graphics looks great and the music adds a lot

Quite hard to master, thoses fishes really want a piece of that diving suit of ours...
But super fun nonetheless, and it's always a nice reward to see ourselves get better at it each time

I guess it's time to grind that leaderboard as if my life depended on it 🫧

You play it and you forget about time and you want to try "more and more". I do hate those little anglerfishes though! Wonderful aesthetics all around, specially "dig" the art!

On the gameplay wise I feel like the difficulty is at a perfect, it's where I can succeed to somewhat and feel good about myself and there's always room to improve myself. Jolly good game overall~ Hopefully you'll do a lil post-jam update and add those features you mentioned hehe!

I didn't regret downloading this game. I got scared 10 times in 10 attempts. This fish from the cartoon Nemo still scares me, here it is also extremely sharp. The last time I was so scared was when I didn't notice another step on the stairs and felt a free flight:D

Graphics and music are at an excellent level, I am pleasantly surprised<3

Great game for 48h! The graphics are simple but perfectly set the mood. I couldn't figure out how to prevent the anglerfish from attacking, they would often kill me even when I was in a little cave in the cliff.

- Neat to see it's made in Clickteam! Well done for a compo game.
- Language option is neat, so is leaderboards.
- This gameplay style is very unforgiving, but I enjoy that! I feel like more games ought to be more uncompromising like this. I find it funny that I just instantly die, haha.
Nice game.

Great game! Really cool concept — well executed and it works beautifully.
Love that you included a global leaderboard, too. I even managed to make it into the top 10!

I agree that this game is hard but half of the difficulty comes from RNG and unfairness. I hate it when eel eats me right when I start a run and when anglerfish puts me in corner. It gets worse when both eel and anglerfish made me stuck at the middle.
Regardless, I like the idea of mining while dodging but please rebalance the game and make it more skill based.

I tried the fixed version and some of the deaths still felt a bit random. Some spawnkills and other angler "it's time for you to die" moments, but you nailed the atmosphere.

@Sevadusk the fixed version is only about a true weirdness where a fish would block himself, standing angrily at the bottom... I don't wanna "fix" the balancing of the fish spawning, it seems against the rules. If I messed that up, too bad, I'll do better in post-jam

(If you're wondering tho, it lacks intuitivity but the fish always spawn a bit to your right, hence he's truely only dangerous when you're playing on the left because you ovbiously corner yourself...)

@colisan yea other than that the game is amazing, it's only a few balancing issues holding it back. Balancing is always that fine line which is so impossible to get right within jam time frame esp 48 hrs.

Game is great! The mood is through the roof :D Art style is beautiful too. Jumping feels a bit clunky, maybe if player collision mask was a bit smaller it would felt better. I also wish there was some delay before muray attack, so player can risk it to grab some mined out stuff or leave it be. From other things, I had a panic attack the first time I saw *it* and accidentally jumped down XD Great work with the game :)
