Block or Bust by blobo

You are the manager of the world's last Blockbuster. Your company is sinking, both metaphorically and literally into the ground. You need to help all the customers, or a single bad review will cripple the stock! Likewise, to prevent the building from sinking, you need to go underground, murder dinosaurs, and use their bones as scaffolding for structural support. (as if that needed to be explained)

Hey man

You might be glad to know that you're not the only one that laughs at your jokes. I had several good bursts of laugh. Top sh*t man, 5* for humor.

The track is killer :man_dancing: but you already know it is. The visuals are nice, though it seemed unpolished here and there, but yeah... compo. Still a job well done.

The transition from the video store to different eras blew my mind a bit. Good stuff!

And I am going to specifically mention and appreciate the fact that the customer keeps the same distance from the counter be it first person or third person view, since people usually don't notice these things, but it's the kind of detail that shows the love and care the artis puts into their work.

And lastly, the only bug I found was the ending/victory screen (I LOLd). W didn't close the game, and then it switched back into the counter view, but that really doesn't matter.

Anyway, great job m8 and all the best to you going forward.

Speed run in 9:59.01...what a great game! The absurd plot was brilliant. The music is catchy.

Was there ever a way to change into the propeller beanie or the coveralls, or were they just there to make it harder to change clothes?

Only bug I saw was one bone that went flying off and got stuck in the black void, so it was unreachable.

I am amazed at how much you accomplished in 48 hours! A tour de force!

This might be the first game I've rated so well  I LOVE the overall mood- the graphics remind me of the (now absurd in retrospect) cartoons I used to watch as a kid, and the cool, retro music creates a very disco-ish vibe. This is of course made even better by the absurd plot (remember that time when the Blockbuster manager was outed for running a dinosaur cave underground?) and it's absolutely ridiculously tasks. Good job!!!

I really loved this! Loved the art, the concept, the music, the gameplay. Great work. I could imagine this being some 90s sitcom premise. Also was I killing Netflix employees?!?! :S :S

This is just AMAZING. I have already sent it to all of my Ludum Dare teammates/friends with a very emphatic **you have to play this** along with it. I love the mild hassle of the wardrobe change. There is nothing about this I didn't love!!

Great animation. Interactions feel good. Music bops. Impressive scope for 48h.

What a FANTASTIC game! The whole vibe of it is so funny. When I booted it up I expected it to be a game where you just scan items and deal with mean customers. I did not at all expect what was coming. Great job!

This game was a very fun experience. The animations, gameplay and overall feel of the game is great. Really gives you that stress of managing multiple things at once. Loved the little details you put like the extra clothing pieces and the different underground maps.

I can only agree with my predecessors. The humor is really good. This ties in with the fun graphics and music. It just sells that slight chaotic energy that comes with the premise.

JESUS I haven't laughed this hard since... idk. Honestly this could *easily* be made into a Regular Show episode. The timings, the music, the vfx, it all flows together soooo good into this kind of "blink and you'll miss it" style of comedy that I just find so hilarious. 10/10 bud!

Such an absurd concept, it's so funny I like it. I'm surprised at the amount of polish (i know it's not 100%, but still) for a compo category game! Overall humor is great and the gameplay was pretty fun! I like the fact that you have to juggle between two things to do and the clothing changing sequence is pretty funny too

What an incredibly quirky and creative game. I love the mashup of retail, shootem up, and dinosaurs for some reason?! It is very much its own thing and I absolutely love its absurd charm. The humor was incredibly on point and I was constantly surprised and laughing. Whats even more impressive is that this is a compo entry so you had only 48 hours to do this incredible work.

As someone who worked in retail for 5 years, I applaud this game.

haha, that reveal on the third stage. Does a really good job depicting balancing different work things despite the absurdity. I found it also really funny that as the player it is very easy to just go along with it as a "I guess this is what I should be doing." Liked the run cycle and the changing costume sequence. Nice job!

I didn't expect the plot twist from the video cassette store, the era of dinosaurs to the destruction of the building. Very original! It seems to me that if the interface is slightly improved, it will be a very pleasant game.

Crazy unique concept! While the gameplay loop at first reads convoluted and needlessly complicated, it actually plays out manageably well and even makes the game reach a certain depth (haha). Also the short puzzle segment in between 'worlds' disguising itself as some kind of customization menu was clever and funny. Love the cameos from your other game's protagonists :D

This was so fun; when you review games for the LD, some of them make you smile, while this one actually made me laugh out loud, so good job on this!

Absolutely brilliant and hillarious plot and concept hahah, love it!
I was not prepared for the absurdity of this (started playing without paying enough attention to the screenshots), and while I get that it grabs peoples attention more to show the two different parts of the game, I'm glad I missed it because it was a really fun twist. LD for me is one part finding great gems of "regular" gameplay, and one part finding great gems like this with hillarious and strange plot and art. Thank you for sharing!

Great work, and good luck!

Wow. Well, this game includes my favorite music track from the game jam so far. I really like this one! The concept is unique and creative, and was very humorous on top of that (Whatever this lady is getting paid is *not enough*). The gameplay is well done and the difficulty curve is well-balanced. The artstyle is also well-done, with good animations and effects on the main character. The only thing that I had issue with was the lack of a way to actually quit the game once playing with ctrl+alt+tabbing (unless I missed something), and I also wished there was some sort of controls screen within the game so I could double check them. These are minor gripes, though, and I enjoyed my time with this done. Good job!

This style of humor is top tier to me - I love the writing in this game, from the vhs tape titles to the descriptions of the clothes. even the fact that you have to arbitrarily change into a different outfit to change between sections is fantastic.

The game too feels really fun to play! I didn't encounter any bugs or issues, and THANK YOU for not making the bone requirements too strict based on the number of dinosaurs and the bones they spawn. (Especially in that last stage!) Everything felt very user friendly and it eases you into the gameplay loop very well. If anything, I would have loved to get some more challenge if there were to be any further levels.

Final time was 7:26.25 for my first run, very fun entry and the quality of the writing, gameplay, art, and music is amazing for the 48 hours you had to work with as a team of one. Congrats!

Excellent game, one of the better entries I tried so far, you did an amazing job. I had a few bug (especially, one were I could sell a tape immediatly after the client came up to the store, but had to do it again as the first was probably a bug or something like that), and I would have love a bit of screenshake with those many explosions, but still those points are really minor. I just had a lot of fun playing the game, a captivating gameplay loop inserted in a stupid and funny setting, loved it. gg!

This is a top entry as many have said before me, really well made especially for a compo. Great job

This game is perfect - the particle effects, the sensible logic, the motivational posters, and the gameplay is truly exceptional.
Plus it explains why I remember every blockbuster employee having a hazy, magical look in their eye - they were rushing off to the back room to blast dinosaurs!
Truly a special piece of human culture I am proud to have participated in - really awesome job!

Well this explains a bit about the old Blockbusters back in the day if everything in game is true!

Where to start... Graphics, Music, Gameplay loop; all fantastic. Obviously humor is subjective, but I like it so thats all that matters to me! The general escalation was great and the details were kinda crazy.

Like there was no reason to have the customers move to the aisle while you're behind the counter. Such an unnecessary detail, but it was there!

So lets stretch some and get some critiques:

1) Music and SFX was kinda unbearably loud, with no way to adjust them. I was playing with friends over stream and we couldn't hear each other, that was unfortunate!

2) The jokes come a mile a minute, but due to the juggling of the situation you miss a lot of good ones. Good writing deserves to be enjoyed!

3) For some reason I kept wanting to follow the bones back to the surface. That obviously doesn't work, but feels so right for some reason. Also at least in 'phase 2' doing so almost get me stuck when I clipped through an apparently no-collision ceiling part.

4) There wasn't any reason I could find to use the extra costume bits, and I was too frantic to just do them for the sake of it.

It was a stretch to come up with those 4, but its all I could come up with. This was a fun time, and hopefully it'll find more people playing it over the weekend.

Easily one of the most creative and imaginative games of the jam. Loved how well balanced the timers were. Nothing felt unfair in that regard. Art was simple enough and kept everything distinct. Sound was great and the music was an absolute bop. Humour was on point throughout the game which is usually very hard to do lol. I have a few qualms though...

The particle effect for when a shot landed seemed like there was a little too much going on, and so sometimes I couldn't really tell if I hit a dinosaur or not.

(SPOILERS)
The level in the third day really needed some semblance of directions or something since it's a bit of an abrupt step up from the last two days. Only saying this because I got lost quite a bit lost and didn't really learn the layout of the level because of time lol.
The bones of the humans might have been a little too small as well since I did miss a few lol, though that might just be me and be a nitpick.

None the less, amazing entry here.

At FIRST, I didn't think much of this, a dinner dash type of game where if your customers aren't happy, they go home sad and you lose when you get overwhelmed but this I had to do X and shoot Y whilst also keeping an eye on Z!?

Brilliant entry, well done with this one!

Everything about the game play progression - from mechanic to mechanic - feels designed by an unfettered stream of consciousness; it *somehow* totally works. I laughed when the game opened, I laughed as soon as I realized I was literally going to have to scan/check out the tapes, I laughed again when I had to run to the closet (at the need to do so and the running animation), 'do' my hair, change my clothes, get on a broom and shoot dinos to... to... to create support structures for the video store?! LOL... The random dialogue/comments great too; I can't believe how much stuff you managed to cram into this game. It's maybe not the prettiest thing ever, but I doubt that was ever the point, and honestly I was laughing so much I didn't really care. Great work! Outstanding for a jam game especially!
