=============================================================================================

A puzzle game / walking simulator set in the apocalypse.

When the world goes to hell and the zombie apocalypse rages on, there are rumors that there's a band of survivors deep within Russia, with food, water, and supplies.

Your only hope of getting there is in the form of a train;

and you must keep that train working.

You must keep that train alive.

=============================================================================================

Controls

  • WASD or arrow keys to move
  • Shift to run
  • Space or W or Up arrow key to jump
  • E (or F if your on the web version) to interact with things with shine

Changelog

  • fixed bug where player cannot start lift even when generator is on
  • added warning because some people cannot hear ingame sound and then think there is no sound even though I have plastered huge god damn warnings on both this and the itch io page
  • added version with better fixed collisions
  • added text telling players to run off of ladders, since some walk off and that is not enough. So they end up getting stuck.
  • changed the itch io download link for the exe

Strongly recommend to download the exe instead of using the web version if you can.

No content difference between original, and version with fixed collisions, just slightly sharpened collision boxes, I reckon your better off just playing the latter

The athmosphere with the grpahics and audio fitted well. Puzzles were nice, maybe bit hard sometimes. Ladders bugged me out of map couple times, I felt like a speedrunner. I also liked the story cuts with the diologue.

Great game! Really loved it!
In the water level, when you have to lock the zombie under you in a door, I didn't realize the button on the upper floor, on the left, locked the door in place, maybe that could've been introduced earlier. Apart from that, congratulations, really well done!

21. Apr 2020 · 04:56 UTC
Very Well made. Very clean. I love the ambiance. The intro with the train. A little bit rigid to play. I found the ladders a bit weird (its like you jump and then wait he is falling down slowly). And It would be nice to have a checkpoint after we have done the first step with the key. I'm stuck on the puzzle with the two buttons. 4 seconds is very short ^^ But i'm pretty bad with this kind of game. Anyway, good job!

I really like the simple graphics, the sounds. The puzzle design is very nice. The environment design along with the sound design really makes you feel like you're alone in the apocalypse.

The controls are a little janky though. Other than that, it's a great game.

Is this inspired by The Final Station?

Great job!

@sai-vivek-amirishetty Thank you for the compliment and for playing, the text animation was actually a simple animation playing! I just made an animation, set it to play at 1 frame per second, have the text appear as frames, then have the button appear after the animation was finished.

@matootsy Well I made you go up ladders really fast because I felt it was a pain to make it so slow. As for the puzzle, there are walkthroughs below the links you can go watch. Thank you for playing, and the feedback!

@jenny-bourke Thank you, and thx for playing.

@santriptasharma It initially wasn't, even after the idea was finalized. Instead it was the artstyle that was influenced by The Final Station (which I really liked) later on. Thanks for playing!

Super fun game. Sound and art are beautiful. The only thing that caused me trouble were the ladders - couldn't quite get my head around the mechanics of them (when you reach the top). Also on the HTML5 version i couldn't get past the train depot. For some reason it wouldn't let me activate the lift even with the generator activated. Really satisfying to play regardless.

The game is a really nice thing, I did enjoy it for the first minutes, but it is also kinda frustrating the game to be honest, it is a little difficult also. Great visuals, sound, story! Overall really enjoyed this game. The final puzzle ruined it a bit due to the issues in trigger finger reaction's needed vs game mechanics.

Overall great game. I recorded & uploaded my raw play through of it here: https://youtu.be/KYcnqhc-tD0
Hopefully it will give you some ideas about how a player plays the game and what they struggle with etc.

Interesting take on a Le Transperceneige/Snowpiercer type of world. I personally found the puzzles slightly too hard, but I am running on a slight lack of sleep given the LD just ended! Really impressed and liked the graphic style and audio SFX too. Will play again once I have a bit more sleep in me! :D
🎤 Darylsteak
21. Apr 2020 · 08:08 UTC
@sami I never realized Snowpiercer was originally a french Sci Fi comic! Being that I love trains, I have to read it. As for the puzzles, it might be too hard for some, just right for others, and to others more, too easy. So dont push yourself, and if you really cant solve one use the walkthrough listed under the downloads. Thank you for trying it out, and the feedback!

This is absolutely incredible, one of my favourite ludum games i've played in a long time. The mood, graphics & world building are brilliant. The physics & controls felt a little clunky at times and puzzles were sometimes a little difficult, but easy to look past compared to the incredible detail and care put elsewhere. Brilliant job :-)

I really liked this game, a clever way to do a puzzle game where tricking/manipulating zombies is a core mechanic instead of just killing them. The only thing I would change is the clunkiness with ladders where getting off them back onto a platform can sometimes be really frustrating because of the constant fall rate.

Nice art style, great atmosphere, good storytelling, excellent audio design. Gameplay however was a little frustrating due to the control layout feeling a little awkward to use, and the high difficulty in getting past zombies and solving puzzles right from the start took the shine off it for me. Really good effort for a weekend game, and with some polish and balancing I could see this being a proper release I'd throw a couple of quid at to play on itch/steam/gog.

Amazing all round. The graphics and sound are fantastic. Only couple of thoughts I had, a ladder climbing animation would add a lot. At the moment it's an easy escape from the monsters, and is the only weak movement I can see so far. Also, replacing the text with an actual scene of what's happening! All things that can be added post-jam... This is one of my favourites so far! Well done.

First, nice foreshadowing with the zombie before you enter the building. :D
Your art is amazing and the game looks very well polished. The atmosphere was great.
And you, sir, know how to make a puzzle.

I took a bit of time to understand the first half of the first one and at the second part it was already pretty challenging to me. haha
When I got to the end of the first I had forgotten about using E and almost thought the game was bugged.
I thought it would have only one level, but you surprised me with 2 more. I was lost with those lifts on the water level and needed the walkthrough to the underground puzzle with the boxes and buttons.
The fuel level was way more easier than the second and I got a bit of movement bugs.

Very nice job on this one. Just get a few bugs fixed, make ladders a bit better (but not slower) maybe add a more challenging part to the third level and you'll have a full solid game. =]

Graphics look nice except a bit small, the font was very hard to read, and text kept popping up that i didn't notice until the next scene was loading.
Sound is really good. I like the interpretation of the theme into keeping a train running.
I unfortunately havn't gotten to experience much because loading is a bit buggy. It took four times just to get the page to load (probably nothing you can do for that), but as I started playing i entered a door, the screen went black, and then nothing.
I'm about to give it another shot.

Okay playing a second time and the door worked. The game is definitely picking up. I noticed there were a couple slightly different ways to complete the first puzzle, I appreciated that. My only complaints are the the mentioned buys, low res, and maybe the ladder-climbing mechanics.

@shaolin-dave Yeah, the loading issues, im actually going to blame the engine I used (Clickteam Fusion 2.5) because it never really seemed very good at porting to HTML5, which is why I advised people to use the exe. The exe also has higher res compared to the web browser version.

I really like the atmosphere of this game, and I'm amazed you managed to put so much into the game and get it to such a polish state in such a short amount of time! The graphics and visuals are really nice, although I do wish that the Reset key (R) would be a little further from the other controls, cause I kept pressing it by accident while trying to press E or T :") It maybe just me though XD

Overall, I enjoyed the puzzles and the game! Great work!

Very cool, liked the style of the graphics. I had trouble in some areas getting down ladders etc. I'd maybe flip the shift key to walk , and run by default? Could definitely be expanded into a bigger game if you so desired. Reminded me a bit of flashback ( old Megagrive game ) in terms of the puzzles .

Oh my, this game deserves the attention it is getting. The overall... deserted feeling this game gave off was a great feeling. It made it a bit suspenseful and really immersive.

Great gameplay, art, and pretty good sound design. One sound I didn't quite like was from the elevator rig on level 2. It is *just* a bit too loud and too harsh for a slow-moving object that is going to produce that sound for a decent amount of time.

Really cool atmosphere. Oh, another thing I wanted to sing your praises for: The punch when the text is introduced, and *how* it is introduced. The speech-like pattern was a very very nice touch.

I ended up getting soft-locked in the second level. This dang zombie gained magic powers! I decided to join them. I would rather be a wizard than a survivor.

![Untitled.png](///raw/ed7/d2/z/323bd.png)

**A few criticisms, as always:**

1) The ladder was a bit finicky. Since this is a key aspect of movement in the game, I feel it could especially use some improvement. Sometimes I went up and down very quickly, other times I went slowly. One time I was launched into the ceiling and almost got stuck, another time I couldn't get off of it and had to *run* at the top to launch myself off of it.

2) The elevator rig sound as mentioned above.

3) Boxes are a bit hard to get around. I have to spam jump to pretty much glitch myself past them.

Overall: beautiful, fun, intriguing, and immersive.

Amazing graphics, sound, and mood. The zombie manipulation was a really clever mechanic, but I have to echo many of the other commenter's sentiments that the ladders were really fiddly (and at times, quite frustrating). Still, excellent game, one of the best!

@johnnysix That changing the walk key to shift idea is a good one, if I ever do a post jam version i'll implement it. Thanks for playing and the feedback!

@saucygames Indeed it did.

@rexent-games @flamus @maytch Thank you, and thx for playing

@gmaanicus Thank you alot for the very detailed feedback, and for playing! I may make a post jam version and if so hope to get everything you mentioned fixed. Also, about that zombie levitating, *absolutely no bloody idea how it does that, it just does!* Either way I added a small system that basically forces it back to the ground if it does that again.

Naughty zombo

As for the ladders, the version with fixed collisions should have it fixed.

@dxk2294 Yeah, of all the things it had to be the ladder to be the weakest link. Nonetheless, thank you for playing!

Probably one of the best games I've seen so far. The graphics were incredible, I really like the art style of this game. The puzzles were incredibly clever and enabled me to have the eureka moment when i finally figured them out. The audio was great too and added atmosphere to the game.

In terms of what to improve on, the only thing I can name is the annoying elevator sound  but I've seen other people have already mentioned that before me.

Nice work, I hope to see more like this in the future.

Wow, I'm really impressed you were able to come up with all of these puzzles so quickly. I know when you get good at art or programming you can really crank out impressive programs and art, but it's rare to find people who can do really good game design under pressure. Hats off to you!
We went with a more established game design, tweaked it a bit, and focussed on polish.

@meskaline @doritolord Thank you!

@majadroid @noirdrive Got it, will try to improve, thx!

@sir-magic The elevator sounds cant be too hard to fix, literally just slightly tuning it down in audacity and maybe add a small start up and shut off effect, nonetheless I'll get to it. Thank you for playing and leaving the feedback, I appreciate it!

@scott-steffes Well when you really think about it, there were really only 5 puzzles (3 in train depot, 1 in the pumping station and 1 in the fuel silo, dont consider the 1st one in silo to be a puzzle, more a tutorial on the lifts, and getting the key was just teaching that zombies are not good). Furthermore I also spent several hours agonizing on designing those 5 because this is the first time i've done a puzzle game.

Thank god I decided to do something useful while agonizing and program some systems unrelated to the puzzles while I was at it, so when I finally did come up with the puzzles I wasnt horribly behind schedule.

Still, thank you for playing, and im glad you were impressed! I hope to make even better games than this in the future.

I really liked the pixel art and the story is nice. Puzzles require some thinking outside of the box, but sluggish controls make the solution hard to execute sometimes. It is especially noticeable in a third area. Even after watching walkthrough it took me a couple of tries to complete it because things were getting stuck. Still, a very cool game! It's lovely! I didn't play enough to feel I could honestly give a review, unfortunately. I got inside the building, and as I did everything/die and restart the level/as things go on, the game got slower and slower. I'm playing on a mac so downloading a win exe won't work for me.

Also, it would be nice if I could hit a button to skip the opening scenes, since I restarted a few times to see if it I could get the original speed going.

This one has potential for a very high overall score in my opinion. And if further developed with some side story, perhaps encounters with other survivors it would it would be a great little full fledged game :smirk:. There were slight issues with movement but nothing major. Other than that, it would be cool if the game had some music as well but even without that the mood is just perfect. Perhaps there could be an unfavorable ending, maybe affected by some mid game decision (wouldn't be too punishing if you just got shot after just few levels ). Looking forward to seeing more from you, or perhaps even this evolving into a full fledged game after the jam!

@fat-cat i actually forgot LD had a server, havent been there in a loooong loooong time. As for music, I'll try to get my hands on some, Im horrific at making it after all. Thanks for playing and the suggestion!

@yorisfresh I'll try to make them less so, thanks for playing!

@chocolat-endive After seeing all the suggestions for music, I might just start learning how to do so, because im very very bad at making music. Thanks for feedback and for playing!

@laaph Things got slower and slower? That's strange, Ive never had such a bug in my life, not that im suggesting it doesnt exist. As for the skipping the cutscene part, it's a good idea! I'll see to it. Thanks for playing and giving feedback!

@inzombiak I'll try to make the puzzles feel a lil more fun, maybe have a easy-medium-hard mode? Either way, thanks for playing!

@lawnchair-society Thank you! I'll try to take the space bar into account next time. Thx for playing!

@cvetk0 I actually had a small plan after the jam ended, where there was a 50% chance you got a bad ending and just got shot, and if you played the game for too long before getting to the ending, the guy just says "apocalypse? you spent so long getting here it ended 2 years ago!". Never came to be though, or atleast, hasn't.

As for the side stories part, im onboard tbh, I'll see what I can do should I make a post jam version, or even a full game.

And finally, I'll try with the music, Im really bad at making music, but no time to learn like now! Thanks for playing and the feedback!

@ryzy27 You didnt use the box? interesting, maybe there is more than one solution, not that im complaining. Thx for the feedback and for playing!

@jusw85 It appears the fixed collision version still has some problems them, I'll try to iron them out. Thanks for telling me and for playing!

@kate90 Which version of the game did you use? It's probably a minor bug I didnt notice. Thank you for telling and for playing the game!

@acoto87 Thank you! I'll try to polish it even more

@stefanie-leitch Did you try running off the ladder? I didnt notice until now but apparently walking off is not enough. Ive added a small text telling people about this after your comment. Thank you for telling me and trying out the game!

@zzox I'll try to further improve movement, thx for playing!

Very nice puzzle, played through it and it left me wanting more :)

Some bugs though: The very first time at the beginning when I came out of the train I accidentally ran right through the wall to the zombie and it wouldnt kill me. I couldn't run back through the wall so I ran forward and out of the screen I went and could never come back so I had to restart the game.

Pretty good game, the puzzles are challenging but I could manage. I accidently played the version before the fix, since only the old version can be downloaded on itch. Maybe you can upload the fixed one on itch as well. The movement speed is pretty slow, I would make the run speed the standard speed. The ladders are pretty clunky, since it's easy the fall off and hard to go over at the top. I would like to move up and down the later, instead of fall down along the ladder and climb up. In the end, I made it to the fuel depot. I felt like I really needed to struggle with the game (because of the enemies), so there wasn't much fun anymore.

Nice game! good graphics and art! A lot done for a game jam. Their needs to be a maximize screen button because the text is too small. The movement does not feel that great because the jump is not high enough that you can do anything. Over all good job, and keep it up!

Ok, that last puzzle in the first aria was a bit chalanging, though I do wonder why I can make water from all the snow that is around.

@theqiwiboy Really? I'll write it down somewhere as one of the things to fix when I eventually get back to fixing this game (slight bit of a mess really, alot of spaghetti code). Thank you for enjoying the game and for playing!

@geegaz What was the last part you were at? If it was the part where you were congratulated for finishing the game, then yes, otherwise, bit of a problem. As for the collisions, I'll try to find a solution, thx for playing!

After the logo and a lot of gifs on the main page, I expected a game about trains and a few locations, but I got big locations with puzzles and just 15 seconds of the train.

Although in the water pump level the colliders and controls got a little buggy, my player started to move left when I have Shift, 'A/W' key and space pressed at the same time. I started moving in the opposite direction whenever I tried to do this. Otherwise, this is one of the best games I have played in Ludum Dare!!

Fantastic pixel art, great atmosphere, and intelligent puzzles. I'm going to come back to it when I have more time to work out the later levels. Great job!

Amazing, I love this kinda pixel art. It gives me the vibe of classic pixel horror or story based games. But the hard part is the instant kill or reset when you touch the enemy, I don't know why but when It resets I got frustrated and don't want to replay the level again. At least give more checkpoints to the level or adds HP so it wont instantly die. because imo it would give the player chance to explore and feel the experience of the gameplay.

Nice! There was a lot more depth to the puzzles than I would have expected, with the second level being my favorite. Like an previous poster, I also skipped the "intended" solution to the fuel silo puzzle by simply jumping from above.

Lots of good decisions with your design here -- you really made the most of what you had, telling a story with minimal effort and using ambient background audio. I'm pretty impressed by the sheer amount of artwork here. There's even some nice lighting/shading effects!

Excellent Pixel Art and great mood. Some bug though, zombies disappeared and audio got stuck on last level at the tower. Like the difficulty on the puzzles.

It's a very good pixel art. The puzzle game type is appreciable and permit the story narration. Good entry!

Very nice! I had to finish it  I'm sure people have brought up these issues before, but there's so much feedback that I'm not going to check for that.. anyway, the main thing I noticed is that I wanted to have a skip button that would allow me to speed up the text scenes :) Some issues with going down ladders, but that could've been the WebGL version. The first puzzle was really good! Could probably have one before starts out a little bit easier, but even that might not be necessary. Overall a very solid entry! Thanks!

The graphics and audio on this are really great. Some of the mechanics are a little jank (particularly the ladders). I also accidentally hit restart once since it is right in between the use key and the raise/lower platforms keys. Those are really minor complaints though and this is a really great entry.
