WOW! I saw your blogpost and your art instantly connected with me. A deckbuilder, what a brilliant idea.

Of course, as a developer; I tested your game; I tried misclicking but it always returned to me and kept me in shape.

This game, is fantastic. I actually love it. I'm still playing it.

What a great job, this is a brilliant compo entry and a possible winner in my book. Please keep adding on to this game after the LD ends. I'll see if I can beat it now.

Cute graphics. It was not explained what the lightning bolt did. I really like the idea, and it somewhat fits the theme.

Excellent roguelike with deckbuilding included!
Excellent graphics with excellent animations that don't annoy the player (are short and to the point).
An excellent & polished entry!

Thanks everyone for the feedback and nice words!

@wansou Thanks! I'm super excited about a few ideas for levels, cards and items. I even coded a basic level editor during the jam, but didn't get the time to use it...I'll wait until the 20days of the rating period are over before adding any other content, or maybe make a second version on itch...

Polished, beautiful, excellent game design, wonderful deck-building puzzle. Nothing, as far as I can tell, to do with the theme. But a joy to play!

I love this game! I love card games, and the mix of deck building and puzzle game is great idea! It's a very polished entry as well, very good job, congratulations!

I did get a bug once where the game was just blocked and I couldn't do anything anymore, had to restart it. I also didn't like when I had to choose between the two of the same card after unlocking.

Other than that, man I'd love to play more levels of this!

Easily one of the best games I've played for this jam. You should really build this into a full game! It would be insanely cool as a multiplayer game too. So cohesive, great art, simple concept but done amazingly. This game really could go places!

Nothing to say, it's polished, the mechanics work well, retro graphics and sound design are simple and neat. Not really close to the theme so but who cares, it's a great game. I would love to see a complete game from this prototype.

This game is brilliant! Audio is quite good (the background music becomes a bit boring at some point), graphics are nice, original and well made, and i really enjoyed the gameplay. UI is also good i think. Probably the best points in this game are graphics and gameplay.

Very cool. I like the graphics, I like the music, I like the idea.
But, I broke the game when the size of my hand became equal to six cards. At this point, something happened to the interface, and after the game completely stopped. However, I went through the game. I'm also not sure about the mechanics of reducing the size of the hand, given that the player is not limited in resources. And I also found a bug, when using the arrows on the last lower lock to the right of it, they show the initial frame of the animation and do not work any further.

WOW, this game!!! It's polished, the music is great, the art is wonderful, I love the aesthetic so much, and the deck-building is so satisfying. Surrounding my baby hearts with shields to keep them safe! I thoroughly enjoyed playing through the first level, you're an outstanding dev!

That was a heck of a lot of fun in a game! I keep telling myself I should do a card game for one of these jams, and this makes me even more excited to try it. Great job, interesting mechanics, and executed well. Fun!

Now THIS I like. Simple to understand game with really interesting consequences and choices that change every playthrough. Well done!

On a different note, one one run I encountered a bug where a 'Consume' card didn't properly disappear after use and the game got into a weird state where I could use each of the cards in my hand once but they wouldnt leave my hand afterwards and I couldnt draw more cards. Just felt I should report this if you ever felt like coming back to this.

Wow, that's really an excellent Compo game. The art is really polished, music is really well done and gameplay is the most fun so far!!! Just one issue is that i got into a bug during the game that i could not use any of my cards and could't get any further... but it was ok for me since i could test the game enough to give a really good rating for this game (and my love for deckbuildings really helps too). Amazing job and congrats!!

Saw your blogpost and the was immediatly grabbed by the art style and overall aesthetic, this game oozes charm and plays incredibly well. Super impressed with how balanced it felt considering the short time frame. Though I did run into a situation where I got so many evil hearts that I was down to one card for a good chunk of the final round despite adding some crystal balls. I feel like the way this is handled good be looked into if you push it further, because with one card if I ended up with another evil heart, I'd have no luck ever getting more cards in my hand.

Despite that though I genuinely loved it, I played a good few rounds picking up different cards to see how they all handled

This is really lovely! Congratz for tackling such a complex genre and coming up with a really cool finished game

The one thing I wish the game had more of was some opposing force, maybe enemies or hazards that were more dynamic instead of just responding to your actions. The way it is now I felt like I could just take my time and wait for my best cards.

Then again, balancing this kind of game and making sure everything fits takes a lot of time, and you guys already did a great job at it with this version! I'd love to see more of this game!

I'm impressed! It's really amazing what you made here! Graphics and gameplay are pretty cool! I think it would be a perfect to make a post-jam version for the game :)

Even though I enjoyed the game such a lot, I've to say that I feel the music is too repetitive, when maybe in these games what you want is to focus on the gameplay itself. However, I like the sound design here. I think it fits very well the game :)

Congrats!

This game is fantastic! Great job! The only complain I have is the game resolution that it's too large for my screen and I had to scroll to play the last level and a bug where the sword didn't attacked the thunder in one turn for some reason. Besides that, it's a very fun game!

Great job on the game. It was a really cool concept and it was executed well. I enjoyed the art style and the music as well. One thing I would suggest is making sure that the 2 card choices were different from each other since I got the choice of the same two cards a few times. Also I felt the arrows were the best card by a decent margin. I would love to see you expand the game :)

This game blows my mind I gotta say! The graphic, the sound, the feedback, every detail polished so well! And the concept is great! I love it!
As a card game, it lacks of some, I don't know, strategy choice? or presure? I think. I know that I must keep the heart whole, but the more I play, the less danger I feel, it makes me less carefully every time I pick a card.
But the whole game is absolutely astonishing!

Incredible game!

I love the way you re-invisioned card games and even though I am not into that genre, I was glued to the screen and highly enjoyed the game. Forgive me for that, but I believe the music doesn't match the pace of the game (it's good, but it is very "active", I'd say). Also, I like that your cards don't cost mana or anything like that and that there are cards that hurt you if you misplace them.

Also, I want to share this screenshot with you. At this point, my heart became impenetrable and I could easily finish the game. I think that something should be done to the "Shield" card.

Woa this is great.

I did ultimately hit a bug, in which an arrow card was placed but didn't fire (It got stuck at the first animation frame, and no projectiles seemed to spawn; or perhaps they did spawn but simply didn't move?). There might be a reason for this mechanically but I couldn't figure out one. Luckily it didn't block the tile so I could just place a sword instead and still cleared it.

Graphics are simple yet lovely. Mechanics are solid, though it might be worth revisiting some of them (Baby hearts seem useless, for example) but there's so much to love here I'm mostly just excited to see where you go with it.

Great compo entry! The UI and little animations are particularly nice. Overall: Clever, enjoyable gameplay, and exceptionally polished.

Fun: Great. I wish it was longer. The rules of this game lead to an interesting (but not too hard) puzzly challenge. (In my opinion, if you call the game roguelite, players might expect random maps?)

Innovation: Yeah! A very creative new ruleset for the game.

Theme: Sure.

Graphics: Beautiful graphics. Everything is so polished - things like the spell effects, and moving the cards around. Really impressive.

Audio: Very nice!

Humor: N/A? OK, there's cutesy faces, but they don't crack any jokes.

Mood: Nice! The graphics, sound and gameplay work really well together.

Thanks everyone for leaving reviews and playing the game!

@reheated thanks for the detailed feedback  indeed, in its current state, it's not really roguelite. It was actually intended to be, and the random map system is half coded, but I cut it before the end of the jam as I was running out of time. I forgot to update the descriptions and texts...The final game is intended to have procedural elements/maps though.
Regarding Humor, I kinda forgot to remove it from the rating as well haha...

Feels super good to play, and it looks and sounds great ! Impressive stuff.

Man, this is good. Imagine it with a bigger pool of cards and a story to ground it all, would be so cool.

I miss more variations of attack cards/patterns. Also, drawing two equal cards to choose from when the next level starts is unnecessary, I guess.

Something to move elements on the board would be an interesting addition to design as a whole. I hope you're considering it!
Congratulations, man. Great game! :)

This is great. Cute, simple, clean art, puzzly mechanics, and deckbuilding. Lovely stuff. The music's really cool too, it doesn't get tiring for such a short loop. If I had to criticize anything, the more puzzly stuff needs either a bit more work or more variety, but it's a really cool game. Good job!

Nice entry! It looks and sounds great, although I think it needs more mechanics that challenge the player directly - right now you can pretty much only lose via your own poor planning. As-is, it's fun for the scope of the game, but something that added more pressure (e.g. enemies) would go a long way towards making it more interesting.

Despite that, it's a really impressive entry; I hope this one does get expanded in the future!

Brilliant entry! Game mechanics are quite original, and learning the interactions can have some surprising effects. Both visuals and sound felt really polished too, even more so for a compo entry (The baby hearts!).

I think I got stuck on my first playthrough (got swarmed by shield cards ), but I managed to beat it on my second and then I felt smart about it.

This concept has a lot of potential, I'll be looking forward to more levels.

Congratulations! :)

Amazing! Best entry I've played so far. Great music, great graphics and great gameplay. Really fun to explore the interactions of the different cards and figure out how to play optimally.

More often than not, it felt like I was just biding time. I get that that's a part of the game but I felt the ratio of turn killing to actual progress was a bit too slanted. Like, it was more time killing than strategy.

Overall though, interesting ideas and very charming.

I like this kind of games and your's is great :) I like the artstyle, fitting music and to be honest I didn't see a lot of games like this in this jam.. well this is the first one so far :)

This was a great idea and I'd love to see it expanded even further. I'm not too sure that it relates to the theme very much, but I don't really mind one way or the other. The mechanics are cool, the graphics, while simple, look nice, the sound track and sfx are great, all in all, really well done. I'm curious to see how you could expand this to make a more fully-fledged game, as it does feel like it starts to get pretty easy after a certain point. I look forward to seeing what you come up with (if you decided to expand it, of course).

Artstyle reminds me of Deltarune / Undertale. Like it!

I had a bug though where the arrows din't shoot after being places on the board

This was really cool. I wanted to do a 'different' card game for an LD some time, and this hit exactly on the style of thing I was looking for. You did a great job.

Really polished entry. This card game is original, nice and fun to play and it is awesome you got the time to include a tutorial at the beginning. Added to my itch.io collection. Great job !

Visually and audio wise it was pretty great. The game itself was also really fun to play, although it got a bit boring near the end.

Nice! I liked the puzzle elements. Awesome graphics, with some real nice polish! Would make a fun mobile game, but lacking a real challenge. Maybe mix up the music a little as well? I look forward to seeing what comes next :)

The most fun game in this jam, nice visuals, nice audio, and the game loop is such a brilliant idea! I was a bit confused on what the shields exactly did and also the game was very easy to strategize around. I really want to see more of this game in the future!

Hey, @zakamana !

👉 Things I liked about your submission:
- General vibe is on point (from graphics to small little vfx)!
- Polished game wtf
- Web version

There aren't a whole lot of cards atm, so once you figured out the mechanics, it was pretty easy to beat. But overal a top 10 submission in my book!

I only now realised this was a COMPO submission!!
I'm expecting a post mortem!!

Very nice rougelike game. I really enjoyed it. Music was great and the presentation was awesome.

One thing I did realize that should be looked into: The corrupted heart. It should probably go down to zero cards and lose the game or something, because when it capped at 1 card I could just spam corrupted hearts and then play whatever card showed up. I ended up my second playthrough with about 7 or 8 corrupted hearts on the grid... felt a bit like cheating :) Add the crystal ball to that and I still had 3 cards in hand.

Would definitely like to see this concept expanded on, though. Really like what you did here.

Game has good art and music. Gameplaywise I can say that I don't understand how I can possibly lose, I guess you need to work on core gameplay a bit more.

Very good one, keep it up!

One of my favourite entries so far. Glad to see a mention at the end of it being expanded to see where the mechanic could go next. Great job.

Wow, it's really great. The gameis just too easy because it lacks of opponents threatening your hearts. However, I love the graphics, sound design music and concept. Well done!

I really like the idea, I also really enjoy this type of games :) Artystyle and sound are also really good.

Most cards just didn't really seem that useful to me - you basically only need swords or arrows and shields to make your way forward. I think with some more elements and actual reasons to use the cards this can become a nice puzzle game! :)

Also the aspect ratio was a bit weird - on my browser I had to scroll up and down to see the whole screen.

Really cool game! Love the art and music. Really polished transitions and tutorialization. Felt like I had to cycle my hand a bit towards the end to get to the last lock. Would be interesting to see how this game evolves if you decided to develop it more. Great job!

Great entry, I immediatelly got addicted to this one and can see the potential for much more.

The game is intuitively understandable, which is pretty rare for compo-entries, but it gives the game great playability as you don't have to try and figure out cryptic mechanics. Nice work.

I hope you continue working on this. Enjoyed it a lot.

Never played something quite like this before, one of the funniest game I've played in LD45.
There is a tiny bug that sometimes you cannot put item on available block, you have to click on something else then click back to do it.

@zakamana Hey man, just played your game since I'm just bored waiting around for Theme Slaughter to start. Super solid entry! I was wondering, what technique (or tool) did you use for things like the tutorial and generally moving cards around the screen? Are you simply using Lerp, Translate, or something else? Thanks, great entry!

07. Apr 2020 · 15:59 UTC
@jordantanner thanks :) Usually, I use either :
- hard-coded Lerp with some easings
- an Animator with the different movements/steps as animations
- or the DOTween plugin, which is quite nice

I'm sure the cards' movement is hard-coded, but I think I used an Animator for the tutorial.

Cheers!
