a Damsel a Day by alec

[raw]
made by alec for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

cover.gif

Our dastardly villain is not very creative.. Every day he steals our poor maiden, and ties her to train tracks! It’s up to you to reach her before the train does!

But the loop continues..

Over..

And over..

How long can you keep this up before finally failing?

Use the array keys to move, that’s all there is to it. Oh, and maybe it's best to avoid the train yourself!

Good luck!

Simple and effective. Great implementation of the theme. Really nice art.
Made it to 23 days. I imagine a leader board would go well with a game like this.
Well done!

I like the Sound of the game and that there is so much detail in it! The moving pixel art trees especially. Unfortunatly due to the randomness I came across some impossible levels that ended rather quickly :P But a very good submission! I just made it 19 days.

Music is really catchy! Also love the pixel art. Simple but extremely expressive. Cool twist on the theme also. Get your reflexes ready to spot where the maiden in distress ASAP!

Cool!

How does the placement of the princess work? Sometimes she was like 2 steps away even for some of the later levels. Is that just random?

05. Oct 2020 · 00:16 UTC
@nick-barrash ya its random(ish). It's based on the location of the train, offset down the train track a number of tiles depending on the difficulty/day counter.

Far from a perfect solution, since it can create both really easy, and impossible situations!

Great Game! Love the chunky pixels, and the "story" really goes along with the them. Love the animated train. :train: . Title Screen music is supper catchy :smile_cat:

Really cute game, love the art! The music is sooooo catchy I legit wanna just listen to this on it's own. Nice take on the concept too, really impressive that you got this done in 2 days.

I love that the damsels font is different from the rest of the game, and the smiley face she gives off when she's saved is particularly charming. I'm a sucker for your art- even though its so simple, I feel like it would do well if you had it pick random assets from a tree array, random plants, random rocks, random terrain- could really keep it fresh if you'd had more time than 48 hours! I also think this would be a perfect game to implement a leaderboard in someday. Good work!

Lovely sound effects. Having a way to sample later levels would have been nice, as it appears the elements get ramped up as it goes on, based on other comments. Or maybe ramp things up faster? Lots of smooth and easy early levels. Fun to play, but not easy to play for long on the early levels at least.

very well executed game! nice music, very nice retro style, really fast paced and you just want to rescue them all!
not sure how you did the levels, because about level 16 was impossible (train and myself went immediately straight right, but train overtook me and i could not rescue her. maybe generational levels need a sanity check?)

Great game! Art is super clean and nice. Would like to see some other mechanic tied into saving the girl. As is, seems like reaction time is the only deciding factor, and it would be cool if the train track configuration had more significance.

Oh the she dead track was amazing! :-)

Art, music, concept was really good. It quickly became kind of stale though. Maybe the pace should be slower, that way you could introduce some other mechanics, like a tracksplitter that you have to toggle that gives you more time or something like that.

Overall really enjoyed it! thank you for the game

It's fun, and a great idea. However, a few times my character spawned behind things, like trees, and I had no real idea where I was without moving far enough, which is difficult when you have a time limit. And, on one level the train spawned so close to the damsel, that I had no time to actually get to her, making it a certain loss. Maybe alter it so the train distance corresponds more with the player distance? (Perhaps I just had a one off bad spawn though haha) Quite addictive other than that! :)

20 days!

Great, juicy animations. I loved the tree sway, the transitions, and the character animations. The game-over music is pretty dang good. Makes me feel bad for losing, lol.

Good job setting the mood with a story, too. Very cute.

However, I think it's a little too simple to hold your attention for more than one or two attempts. I would have liked to see some way of interacting with the train or tracks, maybe with switches or something. But hey, nice work.

22, not bad! A couple close calls in there too. Nice to see another game featuring trains and trees blowing in the breeze. :)

I actually love this. It's simple and crisp and well presented and the music fits the tone which is that ACTUALLY this isn't about any individual damsel-train incident. It's just a constant endurance test of spotting where she is and beelining.

Nice! I particularly like the trees.

It seems like if you play long enough, you'll eventually reach a level that's impossible to beat, but I suppose that sort of thing is inevitable when you're placing things randomly, especially when doing things on such a tight timescale.

Aside from that, the design is tight, the music is catchy and the graphics are endearing. Great all around.

This is the kind of game I would almost consider the perfect jam game. Its just simple enough for 2 or 3 days of solid work, and just polished enough to be a real game on either an App store or Steam or what ever distribution platform. I am such a fan of this 8x8 art style. I would love to know if the trees are rendered behind a filter or if they are actually animated? (OR DYNAMICALLY ANIMATED?). Overall amazing job!

Simple game but very satisfying to play. Could make a great casual game for mobile devices with a trillion more levels. There are sometimes where trees are in the way of either the player's spawn point or the lady making it hard to very quickly decide where to go. Other than that very polished game!

Great job! The art style is great, very cohesive (I particularly enjoyed the trees and transition effect). I wish there was maybe one more mechanic to require a little strategy. A great rection game! :)

The difficulty seemed to fluctuate a bit, at least on my second attempt - is there some mechanism that'd make the track from the train to the damsel shorter as levels go by?

I liked that the game had simple and easy to understand instructions. This made the game accessible for me. I also liked the retro style of the game displayed by the pixel art and the simple soundtracks. I, however, found the game to not really be fun because I felt that there were not many adrenaline-inducing moments. There were not many moments where I barely saved the damsel in the nick of time or was close to saving the damsel.

This was a nice entry. The art was simple but really great. The music was nice but could a little repetitive. I felt that there a lot of aspects of the game which were a little underutilised but it is a compo game so you had only so much time. The current system you have in place can either make an impossible section or make a really easy one. The design seemed a little too simple but either way, it's a great entry. Nice job

I really enjoyed the simplicity of the game and the style of the audio and visuals. I also liked the not-so-subtle allusion to heroes eventually making a mistake after many repetitions of a seemingly simple task.
