Nothing to Say by celia14

You're on a date with a cute girl, but you're feeling tongue-tied... Can you puzzle out how to confess your feelings?
In this dating sim, your dialogue options are limited by what letters you've unlocked. Make note of what you'd like to say - as you explore the conversation with Zoe, you earn hearts you can use to unlock more letters.
Play in your browser, including mobile, here.
An unofficial sequel to Nod from LD26.

For anyone who finds themselves stuck - it costs hearts to buy letters, so if you're unable to unlock any letters, it might be because you haven't earned any hearts. Try replaying and exploring other conversation options.
love these mechanics on dating sims ... there must be a game to go beyond Florence one day =)

Graphics and dialogs are cute. Lovely game!
Very good concept. Flawlessly executed.
There were just the right number of choices. Not so many that it was overwhelming.
Really well done!!
I loved it! The idea was great, new branches of dialogue every replay kept it fresh, the graphics were stylish and on point- I wouldn't take away a thing.
It kind of has me wanting to see a more expansive version where you could type out words yourself, but that would be quite the monster on its own. I really like what was done here, though, because it conveyed that feeling of nervousness and social ineptitude that I know I've felt before.
The only thing I wish there had been was some audio. Text blips as the characters display and some music would be nice.
Regardless, I adored playing it, thanks for making it!
Marvelous work!
Really damn cute.
Also as a general note, it's really making my week to get so many nice comments. I appreciate everyone trying the game and sharing their thoughts. :blue_heart:
Well done folks!
Bit of a Groundhog Day (movie) vibe.
Looks great and well written.
Sound would have really finished this out, added to the immersive quality.
All I'd really ask for is a fast forward button.
Best game I played so far, real neat take on the dating sim genre!
The girl is indeed a cute girl! So lovely and caring <3
I'm curious if you were able to tell Zoe that you think she's great - that's intended to be the end, but maybe it wasn't clear enough. (I still included an option to restart at that point, because I thought people might still want to go through and try other dialogue options.) On the other hand, if you didn't even get the option to tell her your feelings, that could be because it's only available if Zoe says she's having fun - you have to be interesting enough in the current conversation to see it.
Both of those are things I was worried could be unclear, so I'm curious if one was the issue. But either way, I'm sorry it wasn't as satisfying an ending as it could have been.
I think it was hard work creating all the avenues for the dialogues.
Congratulations!

Good work.
Otherwise, your game is really smart! The core idea is very interesting, the story is heartwarming and the art is just lovely! Great job!
This is the first game on LD45 I rated 5 stars in all categories, its perfect in all ways! <3
I'm in love with the art style and how minimal and clear the UI is -- the pink speech bubbles to indicated points is such a nice touch! This was a a very sweet little game, and a real treat to play :) Thanks for making it!
and it was so lovely for u to have such a warm concept. To help such a boy to win his girl's heart is a delightful experience!
( If I can add one thing, this game could also be awesome on a mobile version ! ;-) )
A mobile app is definitely out of scope, but for what’s it worth, the game should be playable in a mobile browser just fine.
I tried to get all the possible responses (Pumpkin! ♥) and I loved the reaction to the picnic. The mechanic was relatively simple but it was somewhat addictive and I wanted to unlock the "I want to tell you something" option, so I kept on playing until I did. :)
I wish there was a speedup/skip button, but since clicking moved it to the next line automatically and the dialogue was quite short, it wasn't a big problem. I really like that she had different expressions and the talking animation, it helped a lot with making the scene interesting, a static image might have become boring after a few rounds, but this was just fine.
It'd be nice to have a sound effect when a new heart was given! But since the text box changed color, too, it was obvious enough and it felt very rewarding!
I rate this "wholesome feels UwU"/10
Looking forward to your future work! :dizzy:
I love the Duolingo idea, that would be so cute! And thank you.
Great idea and well put together for the progression. The simplistic art was perfect. Great entry.
And it's nice to see another lightweight game using just JavaScript and DOM elements.
I like how everything is intertwined and comes out the way it needs to be, I was curious each time what will she say next, and trying to remember the letters I needed!
Though, any kind of music would have played out very well, but even without it, its great shy date simulator with an innovative use of theme

Wish this worked in real life too :joy: :joy:
