Social Distancing For LadyBugs by mehrdadsh

[raw]
made by mehrdadsh for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

My very first GameJam Ever :) .

Important: "Any graphic designer or teams wants to team up to make new games email me please:m.shahiri.m@gmail.com . I could do the code of the game(know little graphic design)".

Made for LD46 Compo with Love, A game about killing bugs to make some distance. :)

Added some nice swarm movement A.I to it as well.

it has one endless level that you can get high scores.

My eyes are pretty much bleeding at this point :) .

I have used freeasound.org free stuff for the sounds: https://freesound.org/people/milton./sounds/86865/ https://freesound.org/people/TexasMusicForge/sounds/173066/

I'm a fan of the BGM and the little jingle that plays when you swat a ladybug! I'm glad the swatter hitbox is really accurate because I had to do some pretty precision work here. Grats on your first game jam!

Hey, this is a great entry. good job with the A.I. and the swarm behavior. It was a fun little game to play for a bit. I did find myself going for a high score. Which means you basically accomplished your goal in making a game like this.

All in all, good job and keep up the good work. I look forward to what you come up with next!

The hitbox of the swatter feels very good. It certainly keeps with the theme of these days :) I think I'd have liked for it to have more levels, and maybe some lives (so the first ladybug you squash isn't game over)

Nice game! :D
Consider the bugcount in a "bugs alive / 75" way that gets bigger / gets red when you are almost at the limit. Personally I don't really pay attention to the bugcap now, because it forces me to look in the upper left corner instead of look for more bugs to smash. Loved the game! :)

Lovely music and fun to play game. I had my first entry this year also and I have to admit you did a great job delivering completed game which keep people trying to get the high score. Not sure if you remember game where the bugs where running on your desktop and you had a tools to kill them (flamethrower etc) but it left the same vibe in me and thats good i played the game a lot when i was younger. :)

Am I the only one who target ladybugs instead bees ? (I prefere bee & their honey than ladybugs) ~~When you got a nest of ladybugs near of you home, you prefere to kill them and let bees live peaceful.~~

It's not a good choice to to kill something for save another one. :sob:

This game is a great work, you got a release ~~(even though I have some reservations about which insect I have to kill/save)~~ :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Maybe i would reduce the hitbox of the flykiller. One great advice I got is that the geometry of the objects doesn't always have to match their hitbox! (Especially for everything that moves very fast (like bullets))

Hihi, I love this game. You've made some good choices regarding the complexity of your game and it all comes together very nicely. The game doesn't have the nicest graphics and best sound loops, but the music and game play are catchy and I love the wink to our RL situation. This game does make quarantine a bit better. @mehrdadsh If this is your first LD Jam I would say keep up the good work and I'm curious for the next game you'll make!

Great job for your first game jam! Hopefully one of many more to come.

I liked the simple concept, it was fun and just the right amount of challenge. Could make a fun little mobile game if you added a few more features. It reminded me a lot of the Mario Paint Fly Swatter game from back in the day (maybe I'm dating myself).

As far as improvements, maybe make the swatter collision a bit smaller when it comes to hitting ladybugs. There were a few times where I hit ladybugs but I didn't really feel as though I should have.

Other than that, great job! I hope to play your next game at Ludum Dare 47.

Fun game, reminded me of that Mario Paint flies mini game, boy I loved that mini game. Cute graphics, nice sound effect, chilling music and an interesting level design. I have three notes though:
• There should be a swap animation for the controllers to feel bit more responsive.
• The first flies to show up should be the bigger ones and then proceed to get smaller as the difficulty increases, or the bigger flies should be able to stand more damage. You know, bigger target = easier to hit so should be adjust accordingly.
• Finally, I think the ladybugs should not overlap each other, at a moment I had three of them to be at the exact same place and that drove me crazy looking for the missing ones so I wouldn't hit them.

I went up to 20300 points, great entry ♥

Good work. I Think the game would do well with some love put into the UI. Custom or well chosen fonts as well as the usage of health bars and such can build a lot of character into a game for a little effort. The UI in this game was a bit basic, so I think it would help a lot if you put in time for UI into your next project.

Funny idea! The music is great but doesn't fit the hectic gameplay. Audio work is nice also.

Ladybug and the first bug characters could use some color differentiation.

Very well done!

Nice fun game! I like the concept of it, the music is nice and catchy, only really problems in full screen some of the scenes have blue walls or whatever you would call them to the side, which im guessing isnt supposed to be there but it happens (it happens a bit in my game too). Heh a nice little game. Someone here posted a highscore of 19k - what a baller, I can't get up to 10k!

I like the music - both the theme (it kinda doesn't fit the action, but also kinda does), and especially the death tune. I also think it's a great idea that you showed the rules _after_ the loss.
Alex Davies
21. Apr 2020 · 19:53 UTC
I love the music and sound design! My only real piece of advice to improve is to make the hitbox on the swatter slightly smaller than the swatter itself, even if it's only a few pixels. Doing this helps to avoid losses that 'feel' unfair even if they are accurate.

Edit: A better idea would probably be to make the bugs' hitboxes slightly larger than their sprites, and the ladybugs' hitboxes slightly smaller than their sprites.

This is exactly the kind of game I would have been hooked on as a little kid! My recommendation would be to reward hitting large numbers of bugs at a time. Perhaps a chime sounds each time you kill a bug, and the more bugs at once the higher the pitch and intensity/fan-fare. Hitting 10 at once should look and FEEL like a great deal!

The sound effects worked well for this game, and while it may not be the most complex of games it does what it does really well which is good. A recommendation I would make, if any, would be to reward the player for hitting more at a time, and giving the player an audio cue for that. Beyond that, it's a simple, but well-made game.

This is brilliant! Something about slotting the very edges of your panel into a tiny gap just next to the ladybugs to get rid of one or two bugs scratches a really specific itch. Maybe in some later version you could have differently-shaped paddles and different kinds of bug with different behaviours, for added complexity? I also love the topicality of it, and the splat sound effects. I scored 1335 on my best attempt.

Very nice game. There is something very fun about games that involve clicking on things, and this one has enough of a twist that it works really well. The swarming behavior of the bugs is great and provides enough space for some strategy that when combined with the interestingly shaped and large swatter made me think a couple of times about the strategy that I approached with. The music was fun and fit the game well, and the jingle when I accidently hit a ladybug was quite good. Great work, especially for a first jam entry!

Great job! :D Smashing the insects feels very satisfying :sunglasses: Could you perhaps make the hitbox of the ladybugs a bit more forgiving? I often smashed them accidentally and was fairly certain they weren't really under my swapper ;) Very fun to play and kind of additive! Congrats!

Congratulations on your first jam game!
The game plays nice and it's kind of relaxing for me for some reason... I don't know.
The movement of the bugs is really well done. The ladybugs, on the other hand, are always too close together and easy to avoid.

Great job!

I liked how your swarming routine worked out, it was nice to see them clump together. I was trying to spot if you had designed as a single lead insect which all followed or if had all the neighbours influence the direction of their nearest neighbours. Would be curious what technique you went with in the end.

I had fun with the game, something cathartic about splatting all of them and mildly saddening when a ladybug was got :(

So simple and yet so engaging! Graphics is very pleasant and the jumpy music gives a nice rhythm to your bug-smashing efforts.

First time I pressed played, I immediately squished a ladybug, as I was expecting my bug-squishing implement to go on some king of arc, not just squish directly in front of itself. I got a groundbreaking score of 0 that time

And none of the bugs are wearing masks! Outrageous !

Simple but really well made game! Pretty addictive, I wanted to beat my highscore and that's always a good sign. I feel like the fly swatter's hitbox could be more forgiving and could have more feedback when you smash. But except these small things, I had fun playing it! Well done !

This is a prime example of taking a simple concept and really focusing on the polish for that core game element. It makes for a very fun and engaging game and it is super clear how to play it.

Also the way you have different kind of enemies is a nice touch even though I don't think they had any other behaviour.

Sometimes in the heat of the moment I smashed the lady bugs which made me facepalm.

![ladybugs.png](///raw/1e4/3/z/33512.png)

Excellent idea! I actually did a flocking algorithm this LD too. Kinda funny how you show the rules after the first fail. That got a chuckle out of me (after I splatted the ladybugs instantly on start). Could get rid of the second dialog box though.

It was a bit unforgiving. One missed more by a slight margin and it was over. I'd decrease the swatter hitbox radius so like the flys radius on the edge of it wouldn't kill anything (especially the ladybugs). Just grazing a ladybug currently kills them and while technically fair, it doesn't seem that way really. Having close calls (where player should actually lose) makes a game more actiony.

Very nice audio work. I really like the fail song bit, really fits it and hammers in the whole "oh you dun goofed" vibe. The art was good but very very static. First of all, should flip the sprite x scale so that the bugs face their movement direction. Also a simple wing flapping animation would do wonders. I mean it's super easy, just make them consist of three sprites, the base and one for each wing. Then just slap in an animator there and rotate the wings around to points and voila, you got a less static bug.

It was very hard to distinguish other bigger bugs from ladybugs the further the game got. I was just kinda squinting my eyes and focusing on red. It probably is quite impossible for colorblind people.

Would have liked to see the same fancy font used for all texts. Although, it could be quite unreadable. It already was quite hard to make out what the red circle buttons on dialogs were saying. But kudos at least for not using default unity buttons, so often see people use those without even changing the color.

The scoring could be improved too. I think (it's very hard to dissect right now too) it is very linear now. Getting more score the more you squash with one hit would make sense. Like so that if you kill 10 bugs with a single hit, you'd get more points than killing 10 individually.

Bug limit seemed too high. Even while idling, it takes ages to fail because of that and more often than not you just end up splatting a ladybug way before that.

Congrats on the first game jam and easily clearing the bar by making a fully functioning game. Good job!

Honestly, there was a bit of lack of polish in presentation, but the gameplay is great. You took an innovative idea and executed it very well, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I feel like lots of games get caught up in presentation and making the game feel and look good, and forgot to make it fun, but you had a good foundation and I enjoyed myself. The game gets faster quickly, but the high bug limit still makes it feel too easy. Despite the slightly unpolished graphics and pretty solid but mildly repetitive music, it was a very good experience and was pretty fun. Good job!

### For the Compo, you are not allowed to use outside assets.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt since it's your first game jam, but I found your two music tracks on Freesound:
- [Losing music](https://freesound.org/people/milton./sounds/86865/)
- [Game music](https://freesound.org/people/TexasMusicForge/sounds/173066/)

From the official rules for Compo:

> Your game, all your content (i.e. Art, Music, Sound, etc) **must** be created in **48 hours.**

Again, it's your first event, so you may have not noticed the details in the rules, but this casts doubt on the legitimacy of all of the other assets in your submission as well, and gives you an unfair advantage over Compo entries that correctly made everything from scratch.

**Edit:** Thanks for opting out and for clarifying. The rules can sometimes be confusing for the first few events, so it's understandable you made an error. Best of luck for the rest of the event and any future jams you do!

Nice simple concept, though I felt sorry for some of the other insects. Including the bigger bugs later on definitely helped to up the ante and make things more challenging. I also appreciated the subtle colour change when you bug-count started edging towards the higher end of the spectrum. With this sort of game it's easy to become super involved and just end up playing it endlessly trying to beat your own high score, so you definitely nailed the engagement aspect. A sweet little game, especially considering this is your first gamejam and all done by yourself :)
the graphics are one of the best I've seen done by a programmer, the bugs looked really cute and the music was sweet and I loved the whole premise, very cute :D
The music was also very well chosen, made me happy. <3
I didn't notice any bugs (at least none without manners! Because like "ladylike", get it?! teehee)
and the controls were easy and smooth :) Managing to get a hold of a huge amount of bugs and squishing them all at once felt really cool, hehe :D Sadly, I couldn't save all the ladybugs :(
Really impressive for a gamejam! :D
Some small visual tips I can give: try to look for a nice font next time (if there is enough time) it adds so much to the mood and makes your UI look immediately better! :) Just drop em into the Font Folder in your Unity project, plus there's a lot of cool free fonts out there! :) Also, while in the build settings you can easily add the Logo of your "Game studio" to the startup screen if you have one :) For Standalone builds you can add an icon there to be used a thumbnail for the .exe file, both super quick things to do that makes the whole thing seem a little more gamelike :D (idk if you did the thumbnail thing tbh, I used the Webplayer :3)

All in all, a very awesome entry! Keep making games <3

A simple concept well made. All is clean and working well. The weird thing is that we have to kill so much bees and they are so important in the nature environment... Why the ladybugs need so much attention ? ^^ Anyway. Perhaps you need to give feedback when we kill a LadyBug by mistake (When don't feel it when the game is over). So, even if I don't like to kill bees the idea to manage the numbers of sprites to keep some other safe is interesting. You made a clean finished game, congratulation!

11. May 2020 · 12:00 UTC
Nice game! Simple and fun! I found it intuitive and enjoyable especially with the atmosphere from the graphics and sound! A simple highscore, infinite game loop works well and you've executed it well here! I think a good addition would be a bonus of sorts when you swat lots of bees at once. So you have to optimise when you're going to swat (when they're grouped together) against when you really need to in order to keep the bug numbers down. Some more diversity in gameplay would spice it up a bit (a bit more game feel and even new bugs as the game goes on). Also, the audio loop appears to cut a little to obviously rather than loop which is a though for next time (this may have been my end so ingore that point if it does loop properly for you). I liked the way the bees moved, the random nature almost seemed natural, and it was an immersive experience. Overall, great job, and you've clearly put in the work and the result is really good. I like the name of your game, and it really suits the theme. When I say theme here, I mean the Ludum Dare one and how it ties appropriately with the present global situation without going to far. Hence, you've done very well done in this aspect. Great game and well done to you!

Yeah, pretty nice game. The visual effect on the screen when you approach the limit is a good addition. Though, it does block out the corners of the screen (making it more difficult). It would be nice if the game kept track of the players highscore. An online leaderboard would be great as well. I managed a whoping 8670! Though, most of the time I got around 2000.
