Social Distancing For LadyBugs by mehrdadsh
My very first GameJam Ever :) .
Important: "Any graphic designer or teams wants to team up to make new games email me please:m.shahiri.m@gmail.com . I could do the code of the game(know little graphic design)".
Made for LD46 Compo with Love, A game about killing bugs to make some distance. :)
Added some nice swarm movement A.I to it as well.
it has one endless level that you can get high scores.
My eyes are pretty much bleeding at this point :) .
I have used freeasound.org free stuff for the sounds: https://freesound.org/people/milton./sounds/86865/ https://freesound.org/people/TexasMusicForge/sounds/173066/

All in all, good job and keep up the good work. I look forward to what you come up with next!
Consider the bugcount in a "bugs alive / 75" way that gets bigger / gets red when you are almost at the limit. Personally I don't really pay attention to the bugcap now, because it forces me to look in the upper left corner instead of look for more bugs to smash. Loved the game! :)
Swatting a big group of bugs was very satisfying.
It was a fun game, oddly satisfying to kill them bugs :D The short background music loop was a bit annoying though.
Overall simple and fun, good job.
It's not a good choice to to kill something for save another one. :sob:

This game is a great work, you got a release ~~(even though I have some reservations about which insect I have to kill/save)~~ :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
Maybe i would reduce the hitbox of the flykiller. One great advice I got is that the geometry of the objects doesn't always have to match their hitbox! (Especially for everything that moves very fast (like bullets))
great game nice job :))
Very nice!
simple gameplay and relax music can kill all my time! =D
GJ!
means alot
I liked the simple concept, it was fun and just the right amount of challenge. Could make a fun little mobile game if you added a few more features. It reminded me a lot of the Mario Paint Fly Swatter game from back in the day (maybe I'm dating myself).
As far as improvements, maybe make the swatter collision a bit smaller when it comes to hitting ladybugs. There were a few times where I hit ladybugs but I didn't really feel as though I should have.
Other than that, great job! I hope to play your next game at Ludum Dare 47.
• There should be a swap animation for the controllers to feel bit more responsive.
• The first flies to show up should be the bigger ones and then proceed to get smaller as the difficulty increases, or the bigger flies should be able to stand more damage. You know, bigger target = easier to hit so should be adjust accordingly.
• Finally, I think the ladybugs should not overlap each other, at a moment I had three of them to be at the exact same place and that drove me crazy looking for the missing ones so I wouldn't hit them.
I went up to 20300 points, great entry ♥
anyone who gets more than 15300 points is officially better than me at my own game :)
Congrats on completing your first game jam, you did great!
@zeggamer , @slothtimistic , (@hcursino , ....
Gameplay is fun!
UI needs some work. Buttons were too small, text was a little stretched etc.
Ladybug and the first bug characters could use some color differentiation.
Very well done!
I like the music - both the theme (it kinda doesn't fit the action, but also kinda does), and especially the death tune. I also think it's a great idea that you showed the rules _after_ the loss.
Edit: A better idea would probably be to make the bugs' hitboxes slightly larger than their sprites, and the ladybugs' hitboxes slightly smaller than their sprites.
The gameplay may be simple but it works well! Feels polished and is bug free. You even got a soundtrack and effects, which is not taken for granted!
One thing to improve the satisfaction of killing those pesky bees would be a nice animation of the fly swat... coming down on the little critters :D
I'm not 100% sure I feel this hits the brief, it kinda feels like the opposite, but maybe that's just me?
Either wa a great little game, that I'm sure I will come back to just to play again. :) x
Was a little concerned about the lack of instructions to start, but got into the game and it was very straight-forward and intuitive (as it should be). Great for your first submission!
A nice clicker adventure!
Nice music and art job.
The game plays nice and it's kind of relaxing for me for some reason... I don't know.
The movement of the bugs is really well done. The ladybugs, on the other hand, are always too close together and easy to avoid.
Great job!
I played several times to beat my score and it was a satisfying experience (best 7620 on a touchpad :sunglasses: ). I would love to have something to keep my attention for longer, thou.
Best,
Anna from 4boa team
I had fun with the game, something cathartic about splatting all of them and mildly saddening when a ladybug was got :(

Great entry!
@kjscott thank you, bird flock algorithm
@bloham thanks, yes, i was dying at the end, i think i worked like 24 hours in those 2 days on this. :)
First time I pressed played, I immediately squished a ladybug, as I was expecting my bug-squishing implement to go on some king of arc, not just squish directly in front of itself. I got a groundbreaking score of 0 that time
And none of the bugs are wearing masks! Outrageous !
I had a lot of fun playing it. It was very intuitive also. Great sounds effect. I miss animation of the ... "bug crasher?" this big gray thing xD
Nice sounds and art too

I'm a programmer(only know a little graphic design) looking for a graphic designer or a team to join and maybe work on new games, anyone interested?
if you are interested email me please, thanks

Very well coded, congrats !
Also the way you have different kind of enemies is a nice touch even though I don't think they had any other behaviour.
Sometimes in the heat of the moment I smashed the lady bugs which made me facepalm.

(@kwaku)
My 2 cents: the text on the buttons is difficult to read and sometimes I lose the game but don't know why because I did not hit any ladybug and the bugs number was way below 75

I did what I can, probably not too impressive though. :D
Excellent idea! I actually did a flocking algorithm this LD too. Kinda funny how you show the rules after the first fail. That got a chuckle out of me (after I splatted the ladybugs instantly on start). Could get rid of the second dialog box though.
It was a bit unforgiving. One missed more by a slight margin and it was over. I'd decrease the swatter hitbox radius so like the flys radius on the edge of it wouldn't kill anything (especially the ladybugs). Just grazing a ladybug currently kills them and while technically fair, it doesn't seem that way really. Having close calls (where player should actually lose) makes a game more actiony.
Very nice audio work. I really like the fail song bit, really fits it and hammers in the whole "oh you dun goofed" vibe. The art was good but very very static. First of all, should flip the sprite x scale so that the bugs face their movement direction. Also a simple wing flapping animation would do wonders. I mean it's super easy, just make them consist of three sprites, the base and one for each wing. Then just slap in an animator there and rotate the wings around to points and voila, you got a less static bug.
It was very hard to distinguish other bigger bugs from ladybugs the further the game got. I was just kinda squinting my eyes and focusing on red. It probably is quite impossible for colorblind people.
Would have liked to see the same fancy font used for all texts. Although, it could be quite unreadable. It already was quite hard to make out what the red circle buttons on dialogs were saying. But kudos at least for not using default unity buttons, so often see people use those without even changing the color.
The scoring could be improved too. I think (it's very hard to dissect right now too) it is very linear now. Getting more score the more you squash with one hit would make sense. Like so that if you kill 10 bugs with a single hit, you'd get more points than killing 10 individually.
Bug limit seemed too high. Even while idling, it takes ages to fail because of that and more often than not you just end up splatting a ladybug way before that.
Congrats on the first game jam and easily clearing the bar by making a fully functioning game. Good job!
Solid concept!
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt since it's your first game jam, but I found your two music tracks on Freesound:
- [Losing music](https://freesound.org/people/milton./sounds/86865/)
- [Game music](https://freesound.org/people/TexasMusicForge/sounds/173066/)
From the official rules for Compo:
> Your game, all your content (i.e. Art, Music, Sound, etc) **must** be created in **48 hours.**
Again, it's your first event, so you may have not noticed the details in the rules, but this casts doubt on the legitimacy of all of the other assets in your submission as well, and gives you an unfair advantage over Compo entries that correctly made everything from scratch.
**Edit:** Thanks for opting out and for clarifying. The rules can sometimes be confusing for the first few events, so it's understandable you made an error. Best of luck for the rest of the event and any future jams you do!
i thought when it said you could use free library that means free sounds too. this is my first jam ever and i did not know that. i removed the Audio rating from my game. but i have created everything else in my game my self. you could check that in the source files, i even put the psd files.
also added the sound files link to the post.
I like how satisfyling it is
.
Overall pretty fun little game! Kudos!
@jaywoody
The only thing I've noticed is that the collision for the paddle is somewhat too big. I kept killing a ladybug and I'm sure the paddle wasn't really over one...
But all in all, cute entry
Keep up the good work.
Satisfying and tactile.
I love the swarm movements!

Nice simple art style, and a well exceuted, playable game!
The only tiny tiny thing, was the button graphics being scaled down and unreadable. ( see screenshot from @joemid )
I got to 9985 until accidentally touching a ladybug :(
the graphics are one of the best I've seen done by a programmer, the bugs looked really cute and the music was sweet and I loved the whole premise, very cute :D
The music was also very well chosen, made me happy. <3
I didn't notice any bugs (at least none without manners! Because like "ladylike", get it?! teehee)
and the controls were easy and smooth :) Managing to get a hold of a huge amount of bugs and squishing them all at once felt really cool, hehe :D Sadly, I couldn't save all the ladybugs :(
Really impressive for a gamejam! :D
Some small visual tips I can give: try to look for a nice font next time (if there is enough time) it adds so much to the mood and makes your UI look immediately better! :) Just drop em into the Font Folder in your Unity project, plus there's a lot of cool free fonts out there! :) Also, while in the build settings you can easily add the Logo of your "Game studio" to the startup screen if you have one :) For Standalone builds you can add an icon there to be used a thumbnail for the .exe file, both super quick things to do that makes the whole thing seem a little more gamelike :D (idk if you did the thumbnail thing tbh, I used the Webplayer :3)
All in all, a very awesome entry! Keep making games <3
P.S.: If you wanna do something about your smart balance, you can always check out our game if you want ;P

thanks everyone :) (@frederika), (@matootsy), (@lazzydev72), (@miranda),
