STRAND·ED by S J Palmer

[raw]
made by S J Palmer for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Ed is stranded on an alien planet with no fuel.

Luckily, there are lots of radioactive rocks around. All he needs to do is gather them up and bring them back to his spaceship...

Unluckily, you're tasked with keeping his DNA intact. Good luck!

Update [23 April]

I had some feedback that the game wasn't very playable for colourblind users so I have adjusted the colours and shapes slightly. There are no changes to the gameplay, and the original file is available for download as 'final.zip' at the itch.io page.

This game was tough. Good concept though. I can see myself playing this a lot and getting good at it.

Wow, this is such a great concept for a game! It was definitely tough for me. I think it could have been bulked up a bit more as far as the tutorial goes but overall, very nice job!

Saw your post on reddit, cool concept! The DNA animations are very smooth, gave me so much pressure trying to repair it ;)

I like this one a lot, it may be my favorite LD46 game so far. Clean presentation, good idea, interesting mechanics. It did take me a bit to figure out, but then I didn't do the tutorial so it's more my fault. Once you see that you can fix things up in a queue it becomes less frantic, at first I was trying to figure out how to fix the DNA right at the end only.

This is what I want to see-- keyboard support. Pressing left and right and then space to flip would make the interaction much cleaner and would allow people to input commands very quickly. I could see someone getting really good with the keyboard and going through DNA like a DDR pro.
Well done!

Really great game! I was really confused at the start as to what health DNA was meant to look like until I understood the pairing system of the top and bottom indicators. After that I had a lot of fun! The difficulty is up there but that keeps you on your toes and means you have further progress with your skill (hence more playtime). Fits the theme perfectly so a high rating for that and overall!

Nice visuals, pretty hard to keep up though! Keyboard controls would have been nice, I'm not a big fan of mouse controls for fast-paced games (although ironically our submission does exactly that...). Cool choice of music and sounds too, and nice to see you're using Godot as well.

Clean visual and cool mechanic. However I had some trouble with mouse-control to put precisely the pair. I think it is due to the fact that the screen was sliding.

I really love the visualization of DNA replication! I'm always on the look-out for science games, and this immediately drew my attention.

Neat idea, and very polished, very playable game for a game jam.

May I request a feature for a future version? keyboard controls! I think it would be possible to control the entire game by keyboard, faster than with the mouse, to get a higher high-score.

Yeah, I would love keyboard controls as well! Such a gorgeous game, tho. Every element is amazing- very cool music! Super juicy as a whole and I think you knocked the death anim out of the park! Thanks for the game!

I saw your game on twitter and thought it looked like a great concept! I really struggled having enough time to react though. The entire right side of the screen is not really relevant to the action. Also, the matching pairs are tiny and difficult to discern from one another. the colors might need more contrast from one another. I think a way to gradually ramp up the speed or frequency of the base pairs would have helped me wrap my head around what was going on. Really polished presentation though, I plan on going back to it and giving it another try!

Interesting game mechanic idea. Visually everything looks clean and cohesive.

To me it seems the beginning is too fast. It would be nice if it started slow and ramped up in speed as it went. It also was not initially clear to me from the tutorial that the strands are being split into two and flipped. If a few seconds was given at the start so the player can catch their bearings, it would probably be self explanatory.

As others suggested, keyboard controls could work well. It was really hard to not only see, but do something with the pairs as they turned flat. Likewise, it also becomes increasing hard to see the shape's direction as they go flat.

The idea of the game is really something worth working with though. Just needs to be a bit more beginner friendly. Could be a great idea for a mobile game.
