Save the Fish by Duck Reaction

[raw]
made by Duck Reaction for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Oh no. The fish is going to die... Save it! It's basically a "Simon says" game, do the right action in order but only if the fish ask it. Don't forget the previous actions and repeat everything correctly to save the fish.

Very good! Reminds me of early Russell Honor games with the very intense nature of it, and that's high praise. The concept is simple, and just a game of Simon Says, but it's executed in a funny and compelling way. The sound effects and extreme animations really make every action you do (except for pressing a key, but that's a small nitpick) feel like a BIG action, which just makes this fun to play with. The stunted, third person presentation, the fact that you made me press quit... it leads to a memorable experience. It might be a repackaged version of a classic game without much changed, but the fact that I played it as long as I did despite that fact is a testament to the quality of the work. Nice job.

I really like memory games, the first game I ever coded was Simon back in Java lol. This game is super hard though because there's much more variety in here and a bit less memory queues you can use. Your game has great art direction and I'm surprised this is your first LD game given this level of polish. Great job!

Haha this one was very unique to say the least. Interesting visuals and (screeching) audio, gameplay equally bizarre and memorable. I'll admit obeying fish commands is a first as far as theme interpretation goes - as far as I know - so definite points for that. Quite a humorous and well-executed take on the memory game genre!

@dreamcastgh0st Wow! Thank you for your comment and your analysis! When we released the game we didn't think people enjoy the game like this! But you're right, need some game feel on "key pressing". So happy that you have fun playing it, that's basically why we want to create games :)

@peachtreeoath Yes the game is very hard definitely! That's right it's our first LD but we really want to make something juicy, we're glad that you feel it playing the game! Thanks :)

@ttyana Yes that would be terrible for you haha
@pke1029 The animation was the tricky part and we spent lot of time to have something juicy! It's a mix between ragdoll (character joints in unity) with tiny physics explosions and blend shapes to have some mesh deformations. The challenge was to have a good result blending 3D skeleton, mesh deformations and physics but finally... It works

Really funny game ! The design of the Fish, the hilarious audio, the satsifying interactions... It might be presumptuous, but I think you had a tremendous amount of fun making this game ! And I had an awesome time playing it, so all's good.

Strengths :
- Self-explanatory gameplay, consistent with the theme and with a great game feel
- Visuals and audio superbly contribute to the fun

Possible improvements :
- Maybe allow the player to restart with a level of similar difficulty instead of sending him back to lvl 1.

All in all, great job !

21. Apr 2020 · 21:35 UTC
Such an artistically impressive game! The sound design really ramped up the absurdity of it all. I enjoyed this a lot, but the screen space could have been put to use by having the fish be bigger. I ended up a few of my longer runs by misclicking what I thought SHOULD have been the body but ended up being the head. :(

A really solid entry, and I can't wait to see what you make next!

@jlv Simon Says is a sequence game, so you can't start at the end ;)

That was funny. I like how you randomise the actions. I got to round 4, but it closed the instructions before I had time to read all of it. Some instruction were also a bit unclear, like "fish says hold" hold what? Also, sometimes "fish says click", but then it only works if I click on the fish. Overall, pretty good game.

@mika-la-grand, @thekingbarry thank you for your constructive feedback. We hesitated during a long time to make instructions more clear, but we have chosen to encourage players to click on fish, making the action very juicy. And so, players discover the right action by their-self. But still, the game deserves lot of improvements to make it more clear. That's why we want to spend more time on the game development.

Thank you everyone, you're making this community awesome !

It took a while for me to notice the bulging eyes on Fish, but I instantly burst out laughing when I did! The sound effects are great overall, but I would have liked more fish-like sound effect for the 'game over' sound instead of a screaming.. uhm.. something? :D I guess it could be deliberate too, but the list of previous actions could be shortened by just showing the actions w/o Fish says at some point? It'll be hard enough at that point keeping track of it :p All in all a very fun game to play (and to compete with someone on how far they can get)! Great mood, great game!

@evert Really happy that the fish and sounds effects make you laugh like this! But yes, you're right, we can add some variations on the "game over" sound, that would be less repetitive. It could be but in the rules, if there isn't the "fish says" before action, you must not do it, because... The fish didn't ask you, right?
@valisse21 don't worry, not your fault, we have to make this game more clear to be sure that people notice all essential informations like this. If you enjoyed the game, that's the essential!

This Is great, I had no idea what I was getting into, but what is was was amazing. Simple simon say, yet so full of life and personality! loved the fish, it failed to make me feel bad but it did make me laugh! I learned I'm surprisingly bad at following instructions or remembering them. Though I think I faced a bug because one time when I got in the groove I failed by pressing what (I think) was the right button. but the fish said I was supposed to do nothing! (which makes no sense because it wasn't the lastest round and I clearly never had to do "nothing" before; thats a memorable act in itself)

Still, game was so fun and silly I couldn't tell, if it was my bad, the game bugging or the fish trolling. Great game loved it!

This is a weirdly satisfying game with great audio and art. Maybe add another mechanic to keep the player interested. You should have titled this one Fish Slapper.

Evaluation...

1 - Mechanics, Learning and Flow:
The mechanics of following the sequence of the previous stage, but adding a new layer.
Learning was not much work for me, because with each attempt we have visual feedback of what we try to do, in addition to a text explaining (I believe in some moments with errors) what we did wrong.
The flow escalates very fast (at least for me), it makes me much more anxious than bored (I really didn't feel bored at all, and I want to return to see if I can get past the fifth "layer").

2 - Graphics, Audio, Narrative and Polishment:
The graphics were really fun.
The audio very funny.
The narrative is not the focus here.
Polishing can always be done, but I haven't really found anything to point out (considering Ludum Dare's time).

3 - Culture:
As it was mentioned that the game genre alluded to another previous game, I believe that it takes sides by increasing the number of game pieces derived from the previous one.
The game doesn't make much sense from the point of view of saving a fish (I didn't expect that, I just laughed a lot with all this, hahahahahah).

4 - Monetization:
I don't know how much the game could be sold, assuming it was just a stage (until now).

Definitely very funny and has a lot of "juice." The graphics are awesome, from the UI design (which feels like a Jackbox game) to the fish animations / reactions (which feels like an oldschool cartoon.

@qfrct @a333 Quit button issue is now resolved for the webGL version!
@gustavo-christino Thanks for your feedback and your analysis! You're right, we just wanted to create a game for playing. Our choices don't have any sense for the narrative aspect because this game is only about "having fun" and "laughing". 30 seconds or 10 minutes where you just forget everything and you listen to this fish
For the monetization part, we'll see, maybe a free mobile game or something else, we don't know, it's too soon for now to decide.
It's hard for us to answer to all comments but, THANK YOU everyone for supporting us!

@james-kusardi it could be the game, cause sometimes Unity colliders have strange behaviour and fail to detect click. I can't tell for sure. Hope that doesn't spoil the game.

This game is amazing. The graphics blew me away. The 3D model of the fish was absolutely amazing. Also I love the sound effects. It is so funny when the fish dies. Overall great game. It gives me a vibe of the fish game, "I am fish", which is like the game, "I am toast", as in those games you had to save yourself and there were difficult controls making it a little rage inducing. The difficult controls are part of the game. Just like those difficult controls it is hard to remember the sequence in this game.

I loved the colour palette, and the wonderfully squishy fish eyes. Something that I found a bit frustrating was the down time between rounds. The 'Fish Saved, Next Round x' screen felt like it could have been incorporated into the main game screen for better flow.

I've played quite a fair amount of game entries for Ludum Dare 46, but this is the first game I rated an overall score of a perfect 5... a game about saving a fish in a completely nonsensical way... Lord help me.

Nonetheless, the game was funny, it was challenging for someone with terrible memory like mine, it was simple to understand, and I loved the incredibly odd animations. My only critique is that clicking the fish on his "upper body" would still be considered his head, which made me a sad fish, sometimes D: But other than that, the game was awesome!

Ahah, it's amazing! No game with LD46 has ever made me feel as good as yours. Really good job! I especially liked the way you did the fish squeezing animation - it's really fun :) I also want to note the sound after death-fast zombies from HL2 perfectly fit into the setting of the game. But I think that by level 5-6 it becomes too difficult to play and it is not very good. However, it is not necessary to increase the difficulty at each subsequent level. But still well done!
