Someone called for an ambulance? by Bauke Regnerus

[raw]
made by Bauke Regnerus for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Take the role of a paramedic.

Explore a small open world island driving an ambulance.

  • Transfer patients to the hospitals
  • Complete tasks
  • Find stuff
  • Eat tacos

My first try at 3D, using Godot and Blender.

The driving is a bit wonky with a keyboard. A controller is highly recommended.

The sliding car controls add a layer of fun to the core gameloop of driving around. It feels cool to drift around corners with a patient loaded up and trying to not hit things. it would've been interesting if there was more to it than just back and forth transport

Great work!

Fun game! The fact that you drive a ambulance on roads that seem to be made out of ice, makes it a lot fun to play. The controls needs some getting used to.

Pretty cool game. Like the AI cars, the indicator, the artstyle. But the movement feels a little strange. Would be better to have the up arrow for the car forward, not the view.

Really liked this, the tricky gameplay, the cute art style and the small bits of humor add to this. Really hope to see more

The game is really fun and surprisingly playable even with a keyboard. The bigger flaw I see is the lack of visual and audio effects mostly on the collision that fill a beat weak. Overall it is a great game.

Fun little game, but in my opinion having the controls relative to the game view is not very enjoyable, the game feel could probably be improved by having the directions relative to the car facing direction.
Nice work !

Loved the art style! Felt nice and arcady to control (used an XBox controller), really wished the cars had some basic sound effects though, that would have made it pop!

Very fun. I find it cool how you managed to create nice models and a nice style only using minimal stuff

Really good art style! I enjoyed driving around the world and really liked the little arrows pointing out of the ocean when falling in.

For me, the controls were really uncomfortable with the keyboard... I would much rather have W go forward and direction keys rotate the ambulance.

very cool entertaining game with coherent graphic style and music. the controls are a bit confusing, i think i prefer controls relative to the car. :)

Loved the graphics. Loved the idea. Controlling the ambulance was a pretty big challenge at first, but by the end, I was drifting off of cliffs, speeding through taco lines, and narrowly missing trains. Fun, funny, cool.

Fun, and looks really good. The driving mechanics were pretty hard to get the hang of, but maybe that's part of the challenge. It also took me way to long to discover the second hospital.

Really loved the game, the low poly art style is defiantly a good choice. I love the controls and the not to easy but not to hard vibe. Congrats!

Really liking this one! I wanted to keep on exploring. The drive mechanics were really well executed. Great idea of gradually opening up the map.

Very cool entry!

At first I thought the controls are a little wonky, but after some time I got a hold of it. Then it felt really awesome racing though the city, jumping from the highway down to the streets and sliding around corners.

Music was neat and reminded me of theme hospital.

Room for improvement could be sound effects and somewhat funnier symptoms of the patients.

Great game. One of my faves. Lovely music and cute poly objects. Movement was confusing at first but renders itself to some insanely fun drifts later on and once mastered, gets really exciting. The map design is great, nothing like jumping off a cliff or running down the runway to the great sea below. The unlockable regions are a nice touch, as well. It lacks a bit in the sound effects but overall, a splendid job by the creators.

Very entertaining! And I like the art style, fits this game very well. The floaty drive mechanics lend itself to fun drifting stuff once you get the hang of it. Only thing it's missing is some more sound effects.

Very well done!

@kaelxd Nice. I wanted the name the game "crazy medic", but there already is a facebook game named like that.

I played Dirt Rally, Overcooked and A Short Hike recently. There a little bit of all these games in my jam entry.

this game is fun. love the controls and everything. I like how polished it is for a jam game.
I played it with a controller.. fun stuff :D
I got bored after a while because of how easy it is. I think this is easily fixable . maybe add a timer or something

What a cute project! The map was way bigger than I thought at first -- great job with it! I would force the first few spawns in a new area though, since as soon as I unlocked the city, the spawns had me staying in the first little area. for the most part and I wanted to explore the city! I think it should also require the sub-mission like getting ice, medicine, etc. Or have a scoring system that encourages it. Overall, amazing job for your first 3D game and in such a short time period!

Great idea and very polished/well executed. I wish there was more audio, It also got a bit repetitive so adding more mechanics to make it more difficult/interesting would also be a future goal! Great work:D

@diinki There is more to discover, but you stopped before unlocking any new areas. Thanks for streaming anyway!

@linluk IKR! I choose to have the controls relative to the screen, not to the car, which works great for a controller but not so much for a keyboard. Thanks for the feedback.

This is super cute! The music is FUNKY :saxophone:

Driving feels very nice. Sometimes I had a hard time understanding where the arrows were pointing. But enjoyed just going around and exploring.

I'd suggest using a bit brighter and saturated colours> so the graphics look cleaner. But that's details.

Man this was pretty great! I loved the drift that cars had when turning. There was just enough to keep my mind occupied and it felt necessary to try to save every single person who had a little bruise. :)

Excellent job!

Very cute little game! :) Saw it on stream and decided I had to try it! Good music choices, fits the theme, great interface, good controls (sure it's hard on keyboard but you say it up front lol). Could easily be an app store game, really great job in the tight constraints of LD!

Quite literally my favourite game of the jam. Very well done! Be very happy with what you've made.
I played with controller and it felt incredibly smooth if that even makes sense.
Also one of the most forgiving games of the jam if you end up in the water :P Great job

We streamed your game with Danae: [link to Twitch VOD](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/598538752?t=00h59m29s) (approximate timestamp)

Fun game! I was not totally clear on what to do to begin with – I expected the challenge to be more about delivering the patients to the correct buildings, but as far as I can tell, the only patients that were not just "go to the hospital" were the food and medicine ones? A somewhat faster progression in terms of areas might have been nice, but maybe I was just rushing due to the stream. I liked the secret medipacks around the map, and the verticality of the mountains and buildings offers a lot of options, similar to Roundabout. Sad that I got stuck on the roof x)

Loved the island and the cute models. The subtitled ambulance siren was a fun touch haha.

I'd say - if you do continue this, is either make it traditional car steering, with Left/Right arrow A/D as steering with Up/Down / W/S for Accelerate/Brake, OR.. Align the 8-Direction style movement to a grid that fits the roads. I could navigate okay with the keyboard, but I was doing a diagonal move ( UP+LEFT) to go straight on a road ahha.

The controls ended up being great - despite my initial reservations. Felt fun - really good within the limitations of a jam. I feel it became a bit repetitive - though I did enjoy the element of unlocking different areas and that some patients needed you to go to different places on the way to the hospital.

Thank you for the game. It's funny and has a good balance!

I like additional tasks for some mission, I would like to see the development of this idea. Also for the full atmosphere, the game doesn't have enough sounds.
