Save Your Wife! by Sparsha Dhar

[raw]
made by Sparsha Dhar for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

You and your wife are professional hunters. Your wife shoots a wolf and now is being attacked by a pack of wolves! You, as her husband have to save her!

Shop:

(Press C infront of a shop to buy)

10 coins= Pistol (50 ammo) + 10 HP

30 coins= Rifle (50 ammo) + 40HP

Tips!

Jump, and throw your wife up into the air to evade wolf attacks!

Swampy lands are easier for wolves to attack. Unless you have a good weapon with enough ammo, its better to stay out.

Before entering the next area, the Cave, make sure your wife has adequate HP.

If you have already entered Area 2, you can always go back to Area 1 to get some extra HP and ammo!

Wait for wolves to spawn for collecting coins.

Its gonna be tough out there! Best of Luck!

Controls:

Movement- Arrow Keys

Open Crates- Z/ Space when no gun equipped

Shop - C

X- Throw wife into the air to evade wolf attacks!

R- Restart game

Our Team:

Thanks to Subham and Tabrez for participating in the Game Jam with me. Due to my errors in managing our team we had ended up with a lot of errors in the player mechanics. We thought we would fail to submit. We did not even have the time to discuss. Codes sometimes become so confusing to understand! That’s when on Day 3 we decided to do the programming again from scratch! Well, as a result a lot of features are missing. But, we enjoyed our first jamming session and learned a lot!

List of Bug Fixes after Project Submission:

(7:02 pm Tuesday, 21 April 2020 GMT)

-Player animation while Picking Up Wife sometimes not working

-Player movements and/or shooting disabling after Picking Up Wife

-Wife Sprite disappearing after picking her up

-Shooting disabled after going to Area 2

-Wife being thrown at odd angles due to an overlapping object removed

-Sometimes wolves spawning every 1 second

(8:18 pm 21 April GMT)

-Changed a condition which considered the time passed after game loaded as the difficulty to set accordingly, which means game becomes more difficult as time passes by and after restarting level its harder.

-Adjusted difficulty

This is beautiful. I love the "Throw wife" mechanic. I am so confused as to why you picked up your wife though. She was never hurt in the cutscene? I love it anyways. Just adds to the feel.
Also, the environment looks super good!
Great job with the game, great stuff.

@crispypear , Thanks for liking our game! Yes the wolf was supposed to jump on the wife in the cutscene, but due to some miscommunications and being low on time,I had to ignore that part.. But this, being my first complete game, and first Jam, I am supper happy with the results!

The game is strange and difficult, but really fascinating! Also the graphics are very nice and the wife tossing -mechanic is really fun.

Nice art style and good work on the cut scene to establish some mood. I found the controls quite confusing at first, and the wolves are tricky to shoot. It would've been nice to have some feedback when you are attacking\being attacked. Must've been in the gym a lot to have those wife chucking skills.

I think I managed to rescue my wife haha! Great idea and execution. The funniest part is when I throw the wife in the air and she falls on the ground. The pick up animation is just priceless.

I initially found the controls a little confusing and hard to master but once i got into the groove, i was able to beat the wolves (thoguh they maybe need some additional feedback to show you have hit them like a splatter of blood or something). Having a reminder somewhere in game for controls would help for sure since i found myself scrolling back down to read the info a lot. I also didn't understand the transition between the cutscene and the game, their was a bit of a jump that i felt like i missed, i was thinking my wife would be the shooter and i would be the runner which could be nice & open up some dynamics of shooting in the air. The graphics in this are really really beautiful, absolutely my kind of style - lovely work on this. Good work!

Cool game, great work on the graphics. Certainly an original concept. A bit confusing that you're wife can get hurt but you don't. I felt a bit bad throwing her up in the air, especially when I dropped her . Good work on the game. It would be interesting as a two player co-op game where the second player controlled the wife and she had some agency as well. Maybe she could be shooting wolves from the air with her mad hunting skillz.

This is hilarious I love how the wife just splats on the ground if you don't catch her. The animation makes it all the more funny - although I do not condone throwing of wives, or anyone for that matter in real life. :) :)

@peterfiftyfour haha thanks for your comment, yes sure, we dont encourage throwing their wives in real life, just love your wife, and save her with all worlds danger. :)

really cool little game made me laugh at the wife landing sound effect - I can tell you had fun making this :D

a couple of suggestions on improvements:

when the wife gets damage make it more clear sound effect on damage maybe
make the movement just a tad slower it was hard to hit anything

I dropped the wife a few times XD. The graphics is really nice, and the mechanic of throwing your wife around is unique and hilarious XD. Could use some more visual feedback when the wife gets hit by the wolves though.

Overall, it's a pretty fun game and the movement was quite polished! Great work!

Nice game! But one tip: You could make an indicator (like an arrow) to show where the wife is if she's out of the window!

throwing wife is so funny idea! But wolves are so fast that I can't avoid them. It's better if wife moves horizontally when throwing her... I feel it's too difficult now.

Very nice game! The wife sometimes got super damaged which was sad as it made me lose faster :disappointed: The controls were also a bit strange but once I got used to them everything flowed easier  Congratz and keep on making great games!

Gameplay was a lot of fun, personally not a big fan on concept but I really enjoy the experiencie. I was able to get use to the controls kinda fast which is good. The only weird thing for me was the main character couldn't be hurt. But overall, nice experience. (PS: Graphics a 10, loved it)

It was hilarious! Wish I could throw people up in the air that high :') Sometimes when I spammed 'X' a second wife spawned and I could pick one up while the other was still in the air... does the character have a pack of wives?

The idea is.. interesting, the graphics are nice and the animations work well! And damn, those are some aggressive wolves! The intro is cool, and the parallax effect on background gives it a nice depth. The thing I would most like to see improved is the aiming, very hard to hit the wolves.
🎤 Sparsha Dhar
26. Apr 2020 · 11:17 UTC
@sorko Yes its made hard.. It feels like starting right off from level 5..
It takes time to get used to the shooting.. We would have made the level easy if this was a game big enough with many levels.. This means the player has to spend a little more time shooting. Sounds bad though right? But we didn't want too easy either : (

Five stars for humor. Your project is really well done, but I am so bad on it - controls are weird, but good enought. There is a big amount of work on the aesthetic and you deserve my respect for that. Maybe a background track could improves mood. However in less than three days you did an anmazing project. Thank you for this experience. Well done ++

Hey, that's an unique idea!

Was rather hard to shoot the wolves - they are incredibly fast and the different heights do no help either (wanted to crouch multiple times but couldn't)

Was fun to throw her up while (trying to) shooting the wolves.

And the artstyle is really nice, as mentioned, as well as the intro.

Well done!

Very funny concept!

When shooting the screen scrolls down.

I loved this idea of having the wife eaten by wolves :smiling_imp:!

If we throw her, the wolves focus on her, so it would be better saving yourself...

I also loved the artstyle!

Congrats!

The art style is really nice, but the wolves simply move too fast for me to be able to react at all.
Thus I couldn't progress too far.

But really an interesting idea.

Although, I love my wife and I'd rather not throw her that high in the air

The look is really fantastic. I love the chunky pixel art style, and the animation is great!
It was hard to tell what was going on with combat and gameplay in the state things are in now, but it feels like you could have something solid with a little more time to build.

Really interesting game, very hard game though :D (the controls were really confusing initially too). That intro was really nice to watch. The animations are really good! Loved throwing my wife a bit too much....she didn't alway land on me accidentally on purpose... Thanks for making the game!
