The Pumpking by WFMG

[raw]
made by WFMG for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

In a field, in a castle, somewhere far away, you are the king of the castle! Well, you were until you were overthrown by the evil brussel sprouts. Now you must roll, dash, and sneak your way back into the castle and reclaim what is rightfully yours!

Controls:

WASD to move around

Mouse to move the camera

Hold down space to charge up a dash!

R to reload the scene!

Game Dev's note: Unfortunately, I ran out of time to add audio, more levels, more enemy types, and more assets. I'm proud of what I made, however. This might become a full game one day. Tell me what you think about that as well in the comments!

Interesting concept. Camera work needs a lot of work tho. When you press the dash button and try to retreat the camera will go all crazy. I personally would accelerate the dash buildup, and maybe make it a jump to give the player a feeling what is happening, as it is now I feel like I'm being teleported, which makes more complex platforming rather difficult. With a little polish this can be a good game. Don't forget to find spooky music! Would like revisiting the game on halloween, you better make it spooky ;)

Is there an intro? I just see a black screen with a skip button. Suffice to say, I ended up clicking skip to start the game.

At times the controls felt a little clunky. I had trouble getting used to the fact that you have to move to orient yourself, so I would roll somewhere, turn the camera and charge to launch myself, but as I started charging my view angle returned to my original roll direction because camera movement doesn't change where my pumpkin faces.

The camera also had a tendency to get outside of the area I was in, so I'd be facing the outside wall. I also shot through the wall a few times, falling down into space. The game crashed on me once.

I had some trouble getting over the spike traps. I'd launch myself but would be sent vertically in the middle between the traps without enough momentum remaining to make it over them. Eventually I managed by bouncing off the wall a little.

The guard balls didn't pose much of a threat, I am not sure if they do damage, but I could fairly easily roll around them. Eventually I rolled into and then around the king and won the game.

This wasn't bad but lacks polish. Adding a ray cast to the camera to stop it clipping through walls and making sure the player auto restarts the level when falling in spike pits would have been great improvements for me.

Not much I can say that hasn't already been said, I like the premise though!
Also, I got a javascript error halfway through the game so that's got to be good lol

I couldn't get pass the big pitt. As for the charging, I guess it might be better if you could still re-orient the camera and cancel the charging, as you must otherwise commiting to every charge you do.

I really miss a pause menu or some way to get back to the main menu. Those spikes at the beginning were not at the bottom so sometimes I'd fall and got stuck down there. Also the left wall on that last level I managed to pass through it somehow. The little intro is really nice, and I appreciate the work put into it haha

@nerdysl0th I haven't heard about this error. What is it?

@flaterectomy Unfortunately, it takes too long to load in the web version. It's a video. It's essentially just what is written right below the game on the itch page.

@starblast Oh, you ask too much too fast. What is coming out on Halloween, however, is Cool School. You can find everything about it on helmersoft.epizy.com!

I dont know why but the game's intro didnt work for me, and I got stuck in the spike pit because i fill inside of it w/o hitting the spikes "^^

I like the game's concept but it'll need more work, good luck

The rolling animation appears to be bugged - the pumpkin appears to "T-pose" rather than properly roll most of the time. (At first I sincerely thought there was no rolling animation at all, but I did see it a couple of times!)

Given how the charged jump is the main mechanic you have here, why not rework the game to focus on it? Have the pumpkin automatically roll down a track, and make the gameplay focus on dodging and jumping spike pits. Something like Canabalt, but in 3D and from a rear-view camera perspective.

All you need is a bit of cinemachine to controll that camera better other then that its pretty nice !

Really loved the lighting effect and 3d models, I think it's always impressive to do this in a short amount of time!! I'm not going to repeat the other comments about the dash issues, I do think that this could have made an awesome platformer if there was a little bit more control over the ability to pass obstacles / pits. I did appreciate the ability to quickly restart with R whenever I miserably failed at properly aiming for my dash lol. Good job for 24h!

Lol. I fell out of the world rather often. And movement was a bit janky as the camera got stuck. But nice idea for a game nonetheless!

One more thing, the web version intro doesn't work. Just a black screen, so inevitably I skipped it.

I like the concept. Didn't managed to get through the big pit, also the camera is a bit challenging to get used to, got myself lost sometimes.
Nice entry!
