Soundmarine by Dustyroom

[raw]
made by Dustyroom for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

You are like a Soundmarine collecting sound buoys to build up music from silence. Keep picking these as they don't last. And don't bump anything else.

It's a sound driven game, so turning sound on is preferable.

Controls — arrows or WASD.

I love this art style. But in my downloaded version, there is no contour and shadow part of the graph.

Your screenshots look beautiful. But, when I tried the MacOS version, the outlines of all the images constantly overlapped, eventually filling up the screen with purple. I was unable to play the game. Also, when I hit escape, the only option was to Pause, not Quit, and I needed to use Siri to open my Activity Monitor to kill the game process.

All i can say: Really nice shaderwork and controls.

My main concern are that the Soundmarine is too close to the camera and that the ship can leave the visible area.

10/10 would want a desktop wallpaper of it without the purple targets in 4k please

Oh, I think this game has one of the best visuals in this jam! And I liked how the audio built up with the game elements too. Sadly the game is not so interesting for me, not my type. But great job anyway guys!

Very lovely little experience. The art looks great, along with the sound design. Feels very polished.
Just a quick note, if you press space-bar on the windows build the ship disappears. Then I pressed is several more times, and could no longer control the camera and then it started to go faster... so not sure what is going on. Used for testing, and left it in by mistake?

Outstanding visual style, but I ran into a bug where the player submarine was missing and I couldn't tell where I was going.
08. Oct 2019 · 17:21 UTC
It looks promising, but it doesn´t match the screenshots, there is no outline or sound in the windows version, and if I press the A button of my controller the submarine suddenly vanishes

Ran into the same issue others are having with my submarine leaving the window and not being able to get it back into view. Other than that, visually great game, love the chill and the sound. Well done.

Very nice and relaxing game, well within the scope of the jam. Good job!

Some issues, though:
- It seems possible to start without a visible submarine. No idea why or how, but it happened.
- Due to the lack of shading, reference plane, and shadows, it's rather hard to understand where things are in relation to you.
- Some of the purple... thingamajiggers can only be reached by going off-screen.

Big wow! This game is dripping with vibes and good times. Amazing art, shaders, particles, and overall aesthetic. Loved exploring through this floating island paradise with good music growing along the way. Easily in my top 5 favs for this jam!!
Terribly Awesome Games

Ah! Wow you are the maker of Empty too!? Gosh, your games and art are so amazing. Do you have a website? Thanks for your contribution to another Ludum Dare. Unfortunately I haven't been able to play Soundmarine because of the bug on mac. Please fix, this game looks incredible!

I'm such a sucker for layered music, and this is some of my favorite! You did an insanely good job, and you killed it with style too. The shading and coloring is inspiring! I kept losing my submarine as you know happens, but even then I had fun accidentally collecting music and hearing it all come together

Cool aesthetics and sound, feels almost like a demo. I didn't get any purple outlines either, and the sub went invisible for some time. Other than that it's very impressive for a gamejam game

One of the best looking games during this jam and sounds really nice too. The aesthetic is really nice, really sets a good mood and the music sounds perfect. Gotta limit where the submarine goes though because for a while, i thought the game was broken then i realized i moved outside of the screen lol

ow that is a really polished game

this art is just amazing .. the sound effects remind me of some modern indie games, amazing how you accomplished that in a weekend

the colors just feel very soothing

the submarine movement is also very satisfying to play with

What a stunning game - really beautiful. Chill game and great vibes. If I could add a couple things, I would love to see the targets you hit changing the visual effects too, making it a trippy experience. That was fantastic!

I must say, this game is wonderful. The graphics are beautiful, the music is perfectly layered, and the controls are spot on! Keep up the great work! (Also, I'd also love to have a wallpaper or two from this game: it's incredible)

Very stylish, awesome soundtrack, overall beautiful experience. Would have liked to maybe see more variety or challenge in gameplay, but still a jammin' lil' game nonetheless!

"Judas Priest" That's what I said to myself when I played and the music started. Top marks for art, music, mood, and inovation. I could play more levels chillin' to the music with this flying submarine. Great job!

Really enjoyed the layered music + graphics. I think this could definitely help with some gameplay mechanics and maybe the possibility of losing music layers if you do poorly at those gameplay mechanics. Though I'm a little torn, because without those gameplay mechanics, it's a lot more relaxing of an experience. Great job!

Whoah, this looks really nice! Love the art style, a chilling experience! Sometimes the pickups are too close to each other so it's impossible to pick up both. Overall - a great entry, congrats!

This game is splenedid! Can't imagine this is a compo game. I am empressed by the art and sound of this game. The layer of bgm is rich and stunning, which also "start with nothing" at first. Have to say this is one of the most complete ld game I have ever seen in LD45. Good Job dude!!

Okay. Wow. I loved this. The music, the visuals, the imaginative world, I adore everything you did with this entry! It was such a beautiful experience, especially once I realized there's not just the one track that could play! The way elements popped in and filled up with color complimented the Moebius art style. It's a simple concept, but the execution is top notch.
I guess if I have one criticism to give, the option to invert controls along the Y axis would be one? But the lack of them did not detract from the experience at all.

This art in this game is beautiful and such a cool style! I love sound/music based games and I really enjoyed this one. I love the music and I'm a sucker for beat heavy downtempo/ambient music. The layering of the music is dope. Really well done and creative use of the theme. Great work!

Yay,someone used layering sound/music for their take on the theme!

It looks and sounds gorgeous, one of the best I've played so far. Mechanics are simple, but they work well if we take this as some chill experience (I still kept trying to reach further to see how the world unfolded in front of me).

Loved this, congratulations!

I'm in love with the sounds and art style, very nice work with the shaders, composition, mood... good job! The mechanics are simple, maybe a little dificult and add something guitar hero like would be a nice add to the mechianics

Okay now that I actually processed that someone made _this_ in 3 days I gotta say I'm still impressed. There are still a few bugs and weird design choices, what annoyed me in particular was that some of the things you gotta collect need to be collected *outside* the screen, you have to leave the screen with your submarine to do it. Also it reminds me of Gorilazz, the submarine, beutiful 3D cartoony shader, windmills in the sky, on floating islands and generally weird things and shapes followed by beutiful music.

11. Oct 2019 · 16:05 UTC
This is really beautiful! The mood is incredible and the bg is packed with nice details :) The theme connection is a bit "light", but it's mostly due to the fact that unlocking layers is not super obvious. The sense of "sound progression" is a little weak. Anyway, it's a very cool game, good job!

Man, I kept listening to the track even after the game ended. Too bad it faded away, so I just had to replay the whole thing! That was one amazing experience! One of the most beautiful games I've seen this LD.

Ridiculously good game for a jam. Superb art man ... Superb. Loved the drums on this track, rmeinded me of Lena Raine's on some Celeste soundtrack.

Gameplay wise it's kinda Rez meets Soundscape, Beatles Yellow Submarine style. Brilliant.

The navigation especially feels so good, just navigating trhough your game is a pleasure ...

Improvement ideas:
- camera follows a tiny bit the user because on the edge it can be a bit desorientatintg.

Congrats

This is so beautiful and everything works so well together. Loved the artstyle and colours. Amazing entry!
My only sugestion is that would be great if the bomb doesn't kill the player, but just make the player lost some sounds.
Overall is a great game!

Lovely idea of collecting sound-nodes on this sonic-journey.. Not sure what's going on with the far/near clipping draw distance, somehow it all gels together. Kudos and nice touch on the "Extra-feature" after completing the level :)

This was a tough one to rate; the visuals were fantastic, especially the way distant objects rendered outlines first and coloration only later was very cool. The audio, while simple, was also quite pleasing, and the way you built up the song over the course of play was kinda cool. That said, the actual gameplay was _very_ limited... it's not really "fun" in a traditional sense, though it's certainly still _enjoyable_.

In some ways, it reminds me of Gris, if Gris didn't have any puzzles, nor any player verbs other than walk left and walk right. It feels like it could be expanded into something really great (like Gris as it _actually_ is), but as it stands it's a bit lacking. Which, I mean, that's to be expected, considering the constraints of the Jam.

Outstanding visuals and music! The art style fits perfectly. Perhaps adding a scoring system would have made it more game-like? Regardless, very impressive. Well done!

Wow that is a really fantastic visual style! I absolutely loved how you shaded everything, it's really impressive how well it works! I wasn't a huge fan of how you died instantly if you hit anything, but I did play it a couple times just to hear that music. Do you have the soundtrack anywhere on the internet? I'd love to add it to my playlist!

This is an easy 5 stars from me :astonished: Insane shaders to get these types of graphics, and the soothing sailing through as you collect music, to keep it from fading, and adding new sick beats! Well done!
