This game may be a little too hard to learn and finish, if you are having trouble finishing it you can skip levels in the level select, but you will lose some cutscenes and dialog doing so. Also the final level is really, really hard but there's a cool reward behind it I promise!

Please look at the credits and explore the game a bit before rating the game as to know what part of the graphics I did!

It starts slow but picks up the pace fast! This is my first Game Jam ever. Thanks for checking out the game!
The "For Educational Use Only" is a Unity watermark and I hate it with all my h̷̦̕e̷͖͑a̸̟̾ȓ̵̝t̷̐͜h̸̩͆

WARNING!!!

Since the final level appears to be really hard I made a video of me beating it for those who wish to see the finale! Link below!

I love these little touches that give the game life - different voices / text colors / personalities for characters that would otherwise be so simple - it reminded me a bit of Thomas Was Alone even. The story and humor, mixed with the surreal setting, made the game give off such a weird mood. It also got me invested, so I'm sad that I wasn't able to get past the second encounter with Might Opponent :tm: and never got to see whether they ever got those sweet n̨͟u̢͜ǵ̷͟҉g̶͠e̷̶̢̧t͝s͏̶̕͢.

@joleon that is the final level!! And yes there may be a nice little surprise at the end hehe. That final level was meant to be hard, so don't be sad about it! If you fell like trying just the final level again it is Level 5 in the level select. Thanks for playing and the feedback!

Really liked the game. Dialogue was great, and I loved the "voices"/sounds they made. I couldn't beat the last level so sadly I couldn't catch the whole story, definitely a little too hard, haha. Also, I think what made the game hard were the commands and aiming system. Maybe some sort of aim assist could be enough. Will try again to beat it.
Good job overall!

Cool controls/mechanics. Only bug i found was that after i died, some of my projectiles remained on screen and blocked new shots.
The dialogue was great, but did drag on a bit too long. Especially with jam games, i want to get into the action immediately.
Good job.

Ok, this was so so so cool! First, love seeing a surrealist / weird game in Ludum Dare. I'm a sucker for weird games. Second, the atmosphere feels so good and I don't know whether that was your intention or not, but the music aligned with the space background made me feel cozy and relaxed for some reason.

I'm bad at hard games, but I like how the game doesn't punish you and instead it just continues.

I like the concept. It's strange, but plays pretty well.

A couple criticisms:

1) There wasn't any feedback for when I changed eyeball shooty-bang-bang-thingies, besides the highlighted menu icon at the bottom. There should be some visual representation on the eyes themselves (like a little jiggle when I switch or something) to tell me which one I'm using so that I don't have to glance at the menu and lose focus on the incoming meteors

2) The eyeballs spinning around while talking is a nice touch, but it interferes with my aim. The only time it was a problem was when miss red decided *SHE WANTED SOME NUGGETS*. I think the eyes should have reverted to their positions when the character scripts started.

3) My shots were getting misdirected by the other eyes' shots. I don't know if they were colliding or if there is some sort of magnetism, but it was certainly a slight annoyance.

Other than that, there were a few grammar issues, but nothing terrible. Overall, well done!

@gmaanicus Thanks for the feedback! The part you refered in your second point was actually intentional to annoy the player a bit and disrupt his aim! So I'm glad to hear it worked hahaha.

Very nice game, i enjoyed it! I'm going to leave a review without reading what other people have said so you can see if something is echoing.

What i would've liked is to bind each eyeball color to a different button instead of scrolling through them. For example J is red K is green and so on. Another thing that would be cool is powerups that drop that maybe increase fire rate or rotating rate or something.

That being said, it's still a great game, good work!

The texts, including the sounds are really funny, and I enjoyed the challenging part of the game. A bit easier indication, like outlining or some effects on the controlled :͜͜.̷͠͠_̷͝҉'҉́͟-̢҉ - instead of showing it on the bottom could have helped a bit. That was a very challenging but fun game! I really wanted to keep going for the rest of the dialogue, but got stuck on a level. I'd like to come back and try it again some time! At first I wasn't sure about the graphics but they turned out to be perfect for this and couldn't imagine the game with another style. The dialogue was wonderful and I let out more than one laugh reading through it, you have a really good sense of humour. While the gameplay was challenging, it also felt intuitive so it didn't feel particularly unfair. I also really liked the music and sound effects, very fitting. Great job!

It was a very challenging game about multitasking, you really need to be doing 3 things at the same time in order to beat that asdasdas whatever it's called.

I also enjoyed the funny text conversations, but the voice of blue and red were really annoying (specially red).

It's a great idea and the game was fun to play, while I also appreciate the fact that difficulty went up smoothly.
Definitely going to get some nuggets now, though.

Hello there! I played your game on-stream last night. Thank you for sharing it!

My favorite part of this game is that - on the surface - the main mechanic appears simple and understandable... One might take a look at it and think that they may be about to play something familiar and approach it casually.

But the game is full of surprises - thinking about the rotations of each weapons, the direction of the rotation, the color of each weapon... and also remembering which weapon I have *equipped*; it forced my brain to think in ways that not many video games have. There is no muscle memory here - a brand new skill to learn. Fun!

And on top of that, there's a whole delightful narrative to follow throughout!

I think some "quality of life" improvements could push this game even further: Add a highlight to indicate which weapon the player has equipped so they do not have to take their eyes off the play area. Maybe add some logic to the random color changes so the asteroids will not change "red" or "blue" after it has passed the distance that it can be hit by those weapons.

Thank you so much for sharing this wacky game

OH MY DEAR PRECIOUS, I so love this game right now! I'm totally sucking at it but I love it either way - that doesn't happen often. My mind is hurting from combining both of my hands.

It would love to play it on a gamepad with colors of the eyes assigning to the colors of A-X-B-Y on xBox controller. But then, it might game been to easy that way.
And I had some problems spotting blue meteorites - no problems with green and red, thou. Maybe some glow about it would help?

Anyway, this is the most fun game I have tried so far on LD!

Hey there! I thought this was really fun to play. I feel like it was harder than it should have because of the controls but I still has fun. The explosions looked really really awesome, and the sounds were great too. I think that you could make the controls easier to use, and possibly put them on the mouse. I think you could send the meteors to the player in a different kind of pattern. Like when you get the second eye you could basically send the one hit rocks for each colored eye, then make a bigger rock that changes colors when hit. This rock could move slower than the rest, all while the one hit rocks are coming as well. You could also show the player what color the rock will turn into giving the player more better opportunities to defeat all the oncoming rocks. You could have a full circle of one hit rocks come down on the player all at once in unison. You could have each eyeball shoot a different kind of weapon. Maybe one eyeball shoots a lazer, and one shoots something with a splash attack, like sort of a makeshift rocket launcher. Maybe you could even give the player some type of super move, where after you have defeated say 20 rocks, you could press a button and freeze all the rocks on the screen. By the way I think you did an awesome job! Good Work!

The gameplay of A Tale of Rebirthism is fun and engaging, but obviously what makes it stand out is the dialogue, which was consistently funny throughout. I wasn't sure if the typos and misspellings were intentional or not but they only added to the charm. Good stuff!

It's nice to see a relatively simple mechanic explored to a high degree.
My finger movement rate wasn't quite enough to pass level 4, but that mostly felt like personal struggle, as the difficulty curve was quite nice.
Some more consistency in art style would make the game more pleasing, but it still works nicely for a game jam.
As for the audio, simple and effective.

Dialog was great! Enjoyed juggling the different colors. Took a moment to figure out that the meteors would change color, so maybe some audio or fx to give feedback would be helpful. Easy to pick up and play otherwise. Nice jam!

Love space games, and this is a good one. I found it pretty difficult. If you keep working on it, add game pad support - can control green guy with left stick, blue guy with right stick, red guy with bumpers, etc... make people tangle their fingers all up on a gamepad lol

Great game. I loved it. Just needs better graphics. Also its a great idea to have a winner list. That incentivises people to play the game.

As I said on stream, if you had mapped the functions to 1234 instead of jk it would've made it much less micromanagement of 1000 things at once, and acceleration on the outer shield (or having the shield closest to the centre, or having it defend "below" it too would help a lot. Was gratifying beating that last boss, that guy deserved death for sure.

Had such a great time playing this one! Reminded me of some old classic arcae games in the 90s! Well polished and the concept is nice! Good luck!

weird looking, but really fun game

It has that arcade feel, but switching can be a hassle. There could be ways to make it more intuitive. Or even turn it into a local multiplayer, when several people can play at the same time.

Wow that was fun! Enjoyed the humor too! The game itself was a little tough and I would have loved to see some camera shake in there, but for the time allotted you did great!

Love the music! it's so chill - doesn't exactly match how hard this gets haha. It's pretty stressful! I like the humor and the overall aesthetic :)

Fantastic game, audio is great, graphics work really well, dialog and humor are perfect and the instant restarts are welcome. Got too hard for me, wish I had a way to instantly switch to each with feedback (maybe jkl;). Very well done!

Nice game. It ramps up nicely, by starting with only one and going up.

The text boxes felt a bit slow, but besides that a really fun game.

Loved the plot, sounds were fully matching with characters, lovely. Only reason I didn't finish the game is because I didn't want to waste to much time trying/getting angry today XD

It was a weird game, and it was also a great game. Couldn't go past level 4, but I had a lot of fun. Amazing work. Good keybinding choices, nicely increasing difficulty, fun story. Ah Pomo, what an experience. I did find your dialogue took a bit too long to get through (considering I don't find nuggets funny..!) However, I enjoyed the game and I appreciate the effort you put into the presentation and scripting. For a jam - checkpoints would have been good. But at least you shared a video to the ending so people could see it if they wanted.

Great game. I really like the individual characters. I didn't expect them to be characters at first glance, but I'm glad that they're not just some kind of weapon without personality.
The gameplay was fun. I had to adjust with the character switching each time I got a new character. Maybe the ability to select the character with numbers would help with that (like changing weapons in an fps with the numbers keys instead of scrolling).

Also thanks for playing our game in your stream.

@honest-dan Daaaaaan!!! Wait, there are checkpoints, there is even a level select, when you die you restart the level, not everything. You're saying you want even more checkpoints ? Split the levels even more ? Hmmmmm

I fell like you may be refering about the interruption dialog in level 3, I made that one to be annoying and interrupt the player, so it repeats every time you play level 3, but that is the only one with that intention.

@arthurds you are correct, my mistake - I misremembered, it was the repeating dialogue!
