Pass it On by Ryan Jung

[raw]
made by Ryan Jung for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

title-screen.jpg

Pass it On is one big game of ~~telephone~~ international espionage. Play as a spy, obfuscating messages and passing them to other secret agents around the world. Rephrase messages and get points on how well you do. Decode other player's messages, deciphering the codes left by other real players. Watch your phrases get mangled in the dashboard, where you can see how a message has been changed from person to person. Keep the message alive!

Changelog

4/21: Fixed bug where failing by taking too long to write a phrase leads to a blank screen (see Github for more details)

Really cool game, not really my cup of tea, however it is really well done and can see a lot of polish was put into it. Hope you guys can expand upon it in the future and I can recheck it out.

One issue I did face was that some of the menu was a little laggy.

That however was it for me:)

This is very thematic, and creative too! I can't believe this came out of a game jam with how polished it is! The timer is very stressful, but I kept playing round after round!

I really love this! One small thing I want to complement you all on is that the game is very easy to get the hang of, even with the use of spy language instead of plain speech. In the future, using phrases that are't famous lines might be a better idea, because guessing was made a bit too easy by the ubiquity of the phrases.

Really nice and different but I couldn't understand too much. Maybe some tutorials and easier levels for noobs like me.
The tick of the clock was genial! Gives me so much tension!

I really enjoyed the innovative idea behind this game. It really made me think about what I was doing and how I was rephrasing the message.
I do think it needs a little tweaking though, some messages were downright impossible to decode.
Overall I really enjoyed my time with this and it's definitely a unique idea!

This is a great game, it would be fantastic if it was better moderated (not possible here I know). It feels very complete, a shame that the trolls keep entering gibberish.

can't wait to see the results after a good number of people played this game.
i feel like i cheated somebody when i misunderstand a phrase but manage to decode it anyway.

I had some trouble understanding what was going on but then I am also really tired after jamming all day. However, the concept seems really cool and I adore the mood the game sets. I'll probably check back on this later when I get the chance.

I was a little confused by the "Guess the original message" part, on my first one it gave me the thing I was decoding as an option so I chose that and won, but the next time it didn't so I had no idea what to click and lost. I'm very interested to check back in once voting ends, I'm sure the progression of the phrases will be interesting! Very unique and cool idea

Man been playing for a while now, im working my way up to first (mainly cause im just having alot of fun). When Javascript came up it bounced between JS bad and JS good until “Jack Skellington's nature is to not be evil, I do declare” came up which was amazing

edit: so you can grind score REALLY easily if you are in every channel i have learned, since you just create new channels and can always guess correctly

This is incredibly polished and accessible for everyone worldwide. Amazing. I might send the link out to friends who otherwise would not get much out of LD entries.

Awesome job!

I think this is the best game I've played yet... My first round I just started cackling like a maniac. I then immediately grabbed my sister and her Fiance so they could try the insanity. I think the game could use more phrases (I saw a couple repeat which took the fun out of guessing) but this is just about perfect already. Expand and polish this and you have a viral social game on your hands!

This game has such a simple concept that I absolutely adore. The theme is nice, the music chill, and the group think everywhere. Super polished, very stylized, I love it in all respects. Gonna hold onto this one.

Damn, son!

Only issue I ran into was that when I failed to encrypt a message (i r slow) the mission summary would never show up and it was F5 or the highway.

Loving all the messages everyone is putting in here! I'm playing the game right now (trying to get some fun ones for you all to rephrase).

Full disclosure, asking for responses in a different language *may* have been a questionable idea but we're rolling with it!

Good luck! Can't wait to see how crazy some of these messages get!

@tobiasw I think you need to phrase it more than six words instead of exactly six, hope that solves the problem!

That seems a bit arbitrary, @connie-liu, but good to know. Thanks!

21. Apr 2020 · 17:55 UTC
Alright, played a bit more now. I love it! It's quick, it's funny and it works well. It's also the first game that I have bookmarked and will probably open multiple times in the next days!

(And thanks for the inspiration! Now I want to try to make something with chains where players build upon each other next time. Probably a better idea than my game for this LD, where the timing is too critical for this distributed community.)

@tobiasw I played your game and it was amazing! Can't wait to see what you make, hopefully you have a (slightly) less chaotic time than we did making ours. Admittedly the word limit *is* a little long

This is pretty neat! I'm clearly not cut out for this game since I failed after only a few turns in but I had fun either way. I think it really sets the mood right into making you feel like a true spy and it's rewarding when encoding and decoding the messages. Great job!!

This was fun. I'm not too sure how it fit the theme, but regardless the concept is neat and not one I've seen done before as an online game. I remember playing this in middle school drama class, so it definitely brought back some memories.

@saadsirius Im sorry your starting phrase was difficult! Sadly we didn't have enough time to make a short tutorial with a starting phrase, so its very possible that the first phrase was undecipherable.

Lol I loved it! It was fun and entertaining. Really creative. If I was to correct anything about it, I'd give maybe a few seconds before the timer starts for the first time so the player can read the tips on the bottom first and then proceed to the game ^^ Amazing one, definitely one of the best ld46 games I played so far :D

The only game I've given five stars across the board to this jam. Amazingly fun concept, execution, and general tomfoolery. The only real suggestion that I have is to give greater rewards the further down the telephone line the guessing player is due to the significant difference in difficulty between a five man line and a twelve man line.
