Ribbon by blobo

[raw]
made by blobo for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

You've become trapped in a loop of ribbon! Luckily, you're still going to be able to move the ribbon if you can cut it in half. Using a rather powerful pair of scissors should do the trick!

Controls:

A and D to move left and right.

The mouse to interact with the world, pick up items, or cut the ribbon.

W and S to steer the ribbon while also moving left or right

It's a bit confusing at first, but to move the ribbon 'up' and 'down' you still need to be holding right or left.

TitleWebsite.png RB4.PNG RB3.PNG RB2.PNG

In case you didn't read the controls, they're a bit less intuitive than I initially thought, so I explain it a bit better up there.

That was super cool, controls took a bit to get used to. Wish I could give you more points for innovation, great work!

Really good idea! It surprised me indeed! The style and BGM are very cool.Btw, does the cover picture relate to this game? or I missing anything?

Alright, that was really cool. The transition between moving around on the ribbon and “pulling” the ribbon through the larger world was so seamless, and incredibly satisfying the first time it happened. This game also has just the right amount of comedy, I quite liked the little forest man and the fact that I had just stitched the ribbon with my house into that world. The music was great, I think that it added a lot to the mood of the game. About the only thing that disappointed me about this game was that it ended so quickly, it was really well done, and I was so engrossed in it that it was a shock for it to end. Very well done!

That was super awesome! The graphics were excellent, especially the 2-d world. Very innovative. While I think the controls could be improved (and the camera was awkward at times), I would definitely have played a full game with this idea.

@justuspan The title screen just has a ribbon wrapping around the player with a background that fits the color palette.

This is certainly impressive for a jam, principally the compo. The most creative use of render textures i ever saw. The visual and atmosphere are pretty unique too. It just lacked gameplay mechanics to increase the fun.

I'd say this will be the somewhere in the upper echelon of innovation this LD. Too bad there wasn't more game to play, but considering how tough it must have been to implement this, and the time constraint of the compo, it's more than understandable. Great work as always Coin!

"Ok, you may pass" hahahahah this is the first LD 47 entry that made me laughing out loud! The game is fantastic! How did you manage to make all this in 48h? It looks great, it sounds great - I like different music in "2d" and "3d" modes. Really nice take on idea. I had similar idea at the beginning - e.g you cut loopholes in ribbon, jump through it to the inner side, to avoid obstacles in 2d world. But scraped this idea as too hard to implement in 48h.

Ok this game is just awesome ! The fact that you did it solo is so surprising ! The main mechanics got me immediatly just when it "start" (after the "cut") and the quantity of visual is impressing (cover, 2 back ground, the world, the intro/outro.) Like, who ! And the game is clear ! Congrat

My only complaint is that it was over so quickly. That was SO innovative. I loved how the music changed dynamically depending on what you were doing. Grabbing the knife and stabbing the orc got a giggle out of me, "*Okay, now you can pass.* LOL The art was adorable- and you mastered the theme. This is excellent!

That was super cool! Never seen something quite like that before. I know 48 hours is not that much time and I know this is just a concept but I really wish I could have played it it more! I feel like this idea can be explored a lot more. Can't really think of any complaints. Even the controls are quick to get used to even though they sound tricky at first.

As always, it's a delight to come and try your entry. It's a very unique take on the theme and it's full of poetry. It's remarkably executed and the visuals and music are a perfect match.

I only wished it was a little bit longer, because when I got the "ow ok I got the idea" feeling, it was ~3 seconds before the end :p. But hey, I wouldn't even know where to begin myself to implement that mechanic, so hats off!

Wow! It's hard to find something completely different, but here we go! Never-seen-before mechanic and cool implementation with great visuals and sound. I'm impressed with the amount of work, both technical and artistic. As a film editor in the past, I have to comment on how this is similar to cutting the film reel to create a story. And how it actually feels like creating a story. Great job!

_None Shall Pass_ lol :joy: so funny.
Only feedback is W/S don't really move up/down as the prompt says, instead they steer the ribbon. That took me a moment to grasp. Once I got it though, it was great fun flying around on the ribbon. **highly innovative** and works great with the theme. Highly recommend!

This was the coolest game I've ever played for Ludum Dare! It was a very original idea and the presentation was done so well. Moving the ribbon around was really fun and the mechanic of splicing the ribbon with another one was really cool. I was sad that it was short, so I just played it a few times  Congrats on finishing and submitting your game!

Moving the loop around was pretty cool! I liked how you could make the loop longer. I thought I could slip inbetween the bars of the locked fence, I could see some exploration mechanic like that, though then you'd have to be pretty precise. Nice job!

Ohhhhhohoho, look at this thing! Awesome! Worth all your hard work, I think, for that first moment when you push against the cut and it starts sliding. Lots of potential, and I actually really like the controls. 2D meets 3D in a way I've never seen. More, please!

Loved it. Super impressive for a compo. Maybe I am high but did the music also get more intense and adventurous when I cut the ribbon on different occasions? Cause I think that happened and it is a really creative use of music and really ups the sense of adventure. Great for mood.

I also really liked the humor in the orc becoming friendly after a stab in the heart :P violence makes everyone reasonable :nerd:

Really good entry and like I said, impressive compo. Easy 5.

Probably the best submission I've played so far. The concept, style, execution: all top-notch. The controls make perfect sense once you figure them out. Graphics and sound are great. Good game with potential to further develop. Very nice concept which I've never seen before. Game could be longer. And work of camera could be better. It was hard to see where I'm going. Maybe some ideas of moving camera by mouse?

Oh.My.God. I mean people, who participate in compo are by nature stand a bit higher than other humans, but this game even by compo standards is really something! Yes, there is a place for confusion in this game, but the intersection between art and technology here is just insane. The game even has a place for some humor! However, no multiplayer. No battle royale mode. Very disappointing! ;)

I loved your game, I like games related to things with paper because I make characters in origami, and this game reminded me of a technique called kirigami, the one that is best known in children's books when it opens it turns into three-dimensional objects, I liked your style of art, it is always a great honor to know these wonderful works, then I will make a point of knowing your other games, my congratulations again a big hug!

I think the controls are actually pretty useable, I think it's more so a case of how to explain it to the player, other than that, incredible jam entry, super unique concept, beautiful art, and even though it has a single line of dialogue, it's one of the funniest I've seen all jam!

It ended way too soon but that's a given. Making more content of this caliber in such timespan would've been illegal. The ribbon textures are so detailed! It does look like a fifth gen game.

It's always great to see a new and innovative concept. That said, I don't think it would translate well into a full game because of how weird it feels.

It's a very charming game!

The art is very well done, so cute, everything very well polished with animations and particles!

The music is excellent too, very lively and matches the game.

The mechanics of the tape and walking around with it by cutting the level is mindblowing, I am very impressed that you managed to implement it in such a short time! And it works very well, without any bugs!

When I looked at the theme, I already knew that many games would implement it in a very frustrating way, like making you lose progression by looping you back in time. But you managed to implement something that fits the theme perfectly and also is very fun and rewarding, great job!!

The only problem is that the game ends too quickly hahaha, I wanted to play more!!

Awesome game!!

This game was rather confusing, but great fun and technically impressive nonetheless! I also noticed it's a compo game, which makes it even more awesome.

I want more levels! That was so much fun, I loved the artwork and the music was great. Getting the ribbon to move was tricky at first, but so satisfying once I figured it out. The highlighting and picking up of objects does feel a little awkward at times, and sometimes I tried to cut the ribbon and it wouldn't cut, but these are little things I am sure that could be ironed out. Would play more levels!

WHAT!? This game is stupidly good! I love everything about it - the art and music are cute and fit together, the controls are simple and pretty intuitive (it took me a sec to learn how to move the ribbon), and the theme is FRICKEN AMAZING!

The only downside is that it is so short. I was instantly hooked and wanted to do a lot more with the idea. Very inventive and superbly executed for a Ludum Dare entry. Great Job!

I think that was the most impressive piece of ludum dare I've played until now. Wow... just wow! This was frickin awesome! The whole game play concept is so well done and polished already that it feels like a finished game. I'm in pure awe. It oozes style and atmosphere and the art direction is gorgeous. I also loved the music and not only do you have really cool score, it even changes slightly depending on the game state, adding even more style points on top. Too bad it was so short and misses sound effects. But that's really not an issue :) The rest was sooo good, that that doesn't really diminish the fun I had. Congratulations! This was very original! Visually is very beautiful, and the music is good (tho it has that chinese vibe that I don't see fit the game that well).

The mechanic of moving the ribbon is as you say a bit weird to get used to, especially the scissors part, but with a little bit of effort it could be easily explained, you need just a bit to get used to it!

I really liked how original it is, I'm sad though that it is more of a concept, and it's true potential is not shown (and it HAS a lot of potential).
I can see this expanded into a complete game where this ribbon mechanic is used in a deeper and more interesting way!
I've seen now it is a compo game, so to be honest you did way more than enough, the polish is incredible, I just hoped to see that mechanic used a bit more but I can understand that in 48 hours it can be a problem, and you did a lot of work.

It also has a bit of funny vibes with the knife part.

Overall, this is an amazing work and one of the best game I've played in this LD, also considering jam entries!

Easily the most innovative game of the jam. Graphics were nice and simple as well. I guess the vertical movement isn't too intuitive and the music was a little repetitive but I'm honestly just nitpicking at this point. It's a bloody awesome entry and I had fun. I was sad there wasn't more though XD

Not at all what I expected! There's some cool ideas in here. I could see this expanding to some really cool ideas and ways to manipulate the level "tape" as you play. The gameplay otherwise is fairly basic, which isn't a bad thing. The music fits well, but I'm sad there weren't more sound effects to accompany it. Great job and very innovative! By far one of the more unique takes on the theme that I've seen so far.

This game was fantastic and the dev is fantastic too. He waited patiently while i played other games for half an hour and kept me company. He is playing over a hundred other jam games, he is game jam hero.

As for the game, seeing as how it's compo, im very impressed. You managed to make great art, complicated player controller AND music. One thing that i will remember for a long time with this game was the door opening and closing when you run past it. You made sure that the ribbon had an animated world within it, very good attention to detail.

You should definitely build more levels and release this on steam, i'll buy it for sure.

Damn it. Impressive entry for a jam...in compo. Amazing stuff. May the music had to be a bit less electro for the cartoon style but it works. Very good game. Congratulations.

It's the first time I see something similar, very unique game mechanics! Original gameplay, great artwork and music fit very well together. I really enjoyed it, I just wish it could be longer. Great job!

Ok, this is easily my favorite game this jam! As many others have felt, I too got sucked in when the "true" game revealed itself.

The dynamic music is very nice. I suspect it would perhaps get monotonous, but the game is too short for me to notice repetitive music.

Contrary to the public opinion, I thought the controls are very intuitive. I didn't even read the description part about controls, and after a few seconds of trial and errors I got the gist of it.

"You cannot be this good!"......"Alright, you may be this good."...\***unalives**\*

I thought that I'm a bit too harsh on the rating, but not on your game.

This is the only game on jam/compo (perhaps ever) that made me say "noooo I want to play more!" out loud when it was over.

This game is pretty awesome. Very good and innovative take on the genre. I think the only thing that it would need to advance this to a "full game" is to get better perspective when moving the strip, as it's hard to see where you are going.

But all in all, top notch!

Really awesome concept that has so much potential! I did struggle to get used to the movement of the ribbon but it was really smooth and well done especially for compo. The ribbon graphics were really cute with and really appreciated the little detail in animation of background pieces in the second ribbon. However, I feel the background graphics didn't quite match the aesthetic of the ribbon graphics but of course, this could have been a time restriction. Music was a little too intense for my liking and I'm not sure it fit the rest of the vibe but it definitely gt me pumped up! Overall, really awesome game that I would love to see developed and play more levels of! Amazing job!

Wow, your game is incredibly creative! I think I can dare to say that it is the most original and creative among all the games that tried to follow the theme in this game jam / compo. The graphics are very nice as well as the sound is amazing too. Everything works perfectly. I can imagine several possibilities, thinking about an expanded and complete version of your game. You created something very precise, don't be afraid to polish this jewel! If I may, the only suggestion I can give you, is that maybe (just maybe), the controls are a little tricky to pick up in the beginning, so my suggestion is that you consider facilitating movement in some way. But still, the important point is that your controls work, and that's a very good thing. Anyway, congratulations for the creativity, and for the achievement, few manage to abstract the idea behind the theme in a very satisfying way. Good job!

Holy cow! This game was fantastic! Such a unique mechanic that works really well. Took a second to get used to but once I figured it out it was pretty intuitive. It was a little disorienting if I moved the character back into the ribbon when I was controlling the ribbon, so maybe some sort of transition or smoothing might make it feel better. That's really the only little complaint, everything else about this game was amazing. Good job!!

This is fantastic 💕

The uniquene mechanic feels good to control after just a few seconds, everything is clear and works well, the adaptive music is perfect, and omg this is beautiful.
I guess the only way this could have been even better is with a bit more audio feedback (on actions and on the unlocking of the last door).

You are very very talented, I hope some day I can do something as good!

This one really blew me away. The concept is incredible and the execution matched it flawlessly. I wish there was more to play, but I really appreciate that it wrapped up so cleanly. I thought I got stuck at one point when I went straight into a wall, but then I got to feel absolutely brilliant when I walked to the end of the ribbon to reverse. You did a really wonderful job with this one.

Wow, this is a surpringly interesting and innovative concept, I don't know how you did all of this in the time of a jam! The elephant in the room are that the controls are somewhat wacky, but honestly you'll get used to them quick enough, so that's no biggie. I found it hilarious when I stabbed the guy to be honest, that was golden. The art was really beautiful too! I loved the concept of the little 'islands' in their own style, but I couldn't help but feel that the brick world surrounding it felt a bit cold and disjoined from the lovely artstyle of the rest. Maybe that's just because you had to cut corners in order to get it done in time, and I totally respect that. Anyway, good job, you did really well on this one!
