Steal water from your neighbors. Let their gardens dry up and die. They defend themselves? Use your guns. They'll try to do the same...

Enough of walking through idyllic villages gathering flowers. This is the era of Animal Crossfit.

I love the art style and the gameplay is fun and addictive. Very cool game and could easily make a full game!

I really love the graphics! But the theme seems a little off.

Funny concept, nice work! Unfortunately, I couldn't get the sound..

that was a funny concept. I love it. I thought the game was a little unfair, and i'm not a huge fan of doom, would rather it be 3d, but definitely a good idea. Multiplayer would be awesome.

I had a lot of fun playing the game, but it is very hard to know when you are being shot at. I died many times without even knowing someone was shooting at me. I loved the strategy of the game too

Very cool game, it was pretty easy though :-) I like the idea, and that gun sprite is amazing! Could be a fun multiplayer game to play with friends. And audio could do a whole lot for the game, as i had no idea where i was attacked from :-)

Love the retro visuals and the idea is really interesting. Adding even simple audio would greatly improve the experience - and maybe having some more feedback as to when you're taking damage could help as well. Keep up the good work!

Overall incredible. A couple of issues, but nothing that really hurt my enjoyment:
- No sound
- No indication of whether you're hurting enemies/their health
- No clear difference between weapons (or indication that you can change)
- Some jank with weapon animations (got stuck on firing frame as the idle)

I really don't like the graphics, but that's just because I don't really like that style. it's actually very well done, and I'll rate you accordingly (altough everything is gigantic?)
I've seen this with a lot of ludum dare games but it really needs a tutorial, it's not fun to just keep getting killed without even clearly knowing what to do.

Pretty fun game it just really needs a tutorial... (oh and scale the bushes waaaaay down)

nice work! i thought it was very satisfying to shoot the guns (responsive and that little recoil felt like a nice addition), though i found sometimes that i wasn't dealing any damage. i really enjoyed the idea too, it was a nice little twist on typical deathmatch style games

Interesting concept. Really liked the graphics, but found the overall concept not that compelling. I mostly just ran around getting water and kinda ignored the enemies. When I won the round, the overview showed other gardens still had water, that was confusing.
Still I liked the game a lot just for the look. Really great work on that front.

Love the graphics, love the style and the zazz. The core gameplay is interesting, and the mix of fast paced FPS with tactical water-stealing strategy is really fun! I missed sound design and music, it would have made it feel much more exciting and responsive. I also wish there were more weapons and a clearer indication of damage done. All things considered, fun!

+ Love the graphics and style

- No sound, would be nice if the enemy names were floating above the wells so you could target specific rivials

I think this might have been a little overly ambitious to be completely honest. You've done very well in a short space of time! It's good fun and fast paced.
It's very difficult to really feel anything without sound, and everything feels very 2 dimensional. The player graphics and the trees look very cool, but some of the other assets like the water and the terrain itself don't seem to match. With a little work post-jam this could really come to life!

I really liked the graphics, I have a special place in my heart for billboard sprites ♥ Fun idea! The beams of light showing where each well is was a nice touch! Some audio and additional feedback for shooting/getting shot would have been cool but great entry! Well done :D

Great concept!

The balance between relaxed gardening activities and frantic mass murder offers a lot of potential for a multiplayer game. I think for the setting pixel art works well enough :D

My main issues come from the lack of feedback about your surroundings.
Unless I had an enemy right in front of me I would get shot and not even realise at all until I was dead (the HUD does update, but you're not actively looking at it if you're focused on the scene). Also, tracking the state of your garden is simple once you figure out, but it was not immediately obvious, so I lost once because I was not aware of the withering state of my garden.

Some basic sound effects would help a lot with some of these things.

Despite all this, I do think there's something really cool past the feedback issues. Keep working at it! :D

Really peculiar way (in the positive meaning of the word). Maybe the sensitivity of the mouse is a bit too high but it's a jam game. It's totally understandable

Old school type of rendering sprites and enemies but, sadly, without sound game looks a liitle empty and you start to focus more on sometimes bulky gameplay mechanics.

For anyone interested, I just wrote an article about the creation process we followed and some learnings we got from the creation of this project : )

Classic style with the billboard sprites! Felt a bit hard to defend properly, and the AI seemed to get a lot of points fast. But perhaps I was just not proactive enough.
As others have mentioned sound would help a lot, even if really simple. :)

LOVED the visuals. The description itself made me smile but then when playing it was definitely a very fuynny game, but def. the trees are my favorite thing in this game. Lack of sound takes away a bit of the mood.

I'm a huge fan of old-school shooters, so seeing the billboarded sprites thing was an instant plus in my books! The movement was pretty fun too, being able to just strafe around at crazy speeds is always a good thing! I think adding some jumping so I could bunny-hop would make movement even better!

The idea is pretty neat as well, I like the idea of bouncing between aggressive and defensive play all the time.

What needs a lot of work though is the gun play. Right now it's just press mouse 1 a few times until the enemy dies, or you die, whichever happens first. Which, technically, is how it works in all shooters. But you'll notice about other shooters is that they do a bunch of tricks to make that action feel really powerful and fun. Look at the animations in some of your favorite shooters and try to get the guns in your game to move in similar ways. Also make the enemies really react to getting hit. I'm talking particles, knockback, a bunch of sound effects, hit markers - anything you can do to make sure the player knows they hit someone, do it!

I think for a game jam it's definitely a solid effort, but if you decide to take it further you should really try to polish that gameplay up!

Since some people asked us which technique did we use to create the sprites in less than 72h, I decided to write an article about it: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/garden-royale/garden-royale-making-off-part-2

Wow lot's of fun! There was'nt much feedback on when I hit an enemy, when an enemy died, when I was being hit, how many times I could be hit, or when an enemy was stealing my water. I wish there was also a way to tell which wells belonged to who, as enemy one got way ahead of everyone but I didn't know where his well was. Awesome first entry that was a lot of fun tho! Really dig the art style! PS. Came here after reading your making of!

Interesting take on the theme. I much liked the billboard 3D pixel art vegetation, that was really cool. A bit of sound would be nice though, and it was a bit hard to see if I hit somebody. Thanks for the article too, was inspiring.

It reminded me of Daggerfall or Wolfenstein (old one) in terms of graphics, cool! It was fun.
