Nothing by JoelLikesPigs
This is my first Ludum Dare I decided to keep things as simple as possible. Here is my game "NOTHING" a short platformer where you start with nothing. Including controls.
About 10 - 15 minutes to complete. Emphasis on humor and artstyle.
UPDATE: Added some post jam versions - obviously for a true judgement please only make scores on the original, however the new downloads offer an easier version with the stomping machine things not killing you if you walk into the side of them, as well as some minor bug fixes and clarifying some glaring issues I hadn't noticed in both versions of the post jam files.
I still need to find whats causing the notorious elevator glitch - it's on the list. And after finding out people are mad enough to collect all the upgrades I'll be working on an alertnate ending.
HTML5 Version now available However It uses post jam fixes please judge the original exe if possible
Thanks for everyones positive responses so far, I genuinely appreciate it.

@circleoflife Hey thanks thats quite the compliment - I made everything excepet the music myself and though this is my first Jam, I have been making games for the past couple years if you want to check out some of my other stuff my itch.io page is: https://joellikespigs.itch.io/ (I personally recommend Just passing a game I made last october for the #Devtober hashtag)
@ninjacatz Thanks! It's been really encouraging seeing peoples responses to everything. I mention it above but I think my best game is Just passing another game I made last october It was made in less than a month and can be played in the browser.
Had a lot of fun, I love the art style, aaand that was pretty clever!
Congrats!
@jane-pr It's crazy how removing something we've grown dependant on changes how we play platformers, when play testing this I would instinctively try and correct myself in the air, but it all comes down to slowly being patient with platforms instead. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for checking it out.
@fragment-games Thanks! Art is my strong point compared to my coding, so I'm glad people are enjoying that. Thanks again for checking out the game
couple of bugs and weird polish things (such as the music doubling up after the elevator) as already mentioned, but mostly inoffensive especially for a ludum dare game. also the music fits perfectly.
nice, fun experience :)
@torcado Wow! Torcardo thanks for checking out my game, your stuff is always super impressive so that means a lot, again sorry about the audio glitch, not entirely sure what causes it. But I'm super glad you enjoyed it thanks again
And the graphics are top !
One of my favourite for currently <3
@karanveer thanks for checking out the game. I'm a little confused on what must have happened on your playthrough. The sound unlock is the first unlock, and you can only move left for a large amount of the game, jump shouldnt unlock automatically either, its unlocked in the first real area at the beginning. Is there a chance you've rated my game by mistake?
@designernap Oh man thanks! That means a lot I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@romibarbosa Thank you! Thats awesome I'm glad you liked it.
@clemonades thanks! And I know right? play testing this was a huge pain haha
It's a good critique though I should either make the stompy things have spikes on them or instead make them solid on the sides *EDIT* I just want back and added this in turned out quite easy to add - that being said the game is a million times easier with them, not sure if I enjoy it or not ...hmmm
@torfi thanks torfi glad you enjoyed it

I had fun and loved the humor, and the hidden message, one of my fav game in the jam so far, well done !!
@Tori thanks! I really appreciate it and the response has been very positive so far thank you so much for checking out the game I'm glad you enjoyed it
@mmatt-ugh the elusive blue mode is not for the faint of heart haha. Thanks for checking out the game I'm glad you enjoyed it
@morilia It seems I've found a true completionist for my little game here - I didn't think anyone would want to go through all that again and collect all the power ups I'll for sure add something in the future for people like yourself. Thanks again for playing the game, I love that someone was willing to go through and try and find everything haha
@veer Thanks! The fairy is my favorite power up too haha
@jjoeyay I'm so glad people are enjoying the humor I just put in stuff that makes me laugh so I'm glad other people are also appreciating it haha
@bearlikelion I've been told this area is quite difficult and after watching someone play it today I'm working ona revision to try and make it a little more accessible. Many people have noted they weren't aware you could move the camera, as its not explained in game anywhere, this tends to help make that area much easier - I'm working on some changes to make this more obvious though. Glad you tried it out though. Thanks again
A few people have done the Platformer with Missing Abilities. I'm terrible at platformers, so it was nice I was able to actually finish this one!
\
Interestingly, I started with the Easy version, so I knew about the camera shift.
- I didn't see anything fancy to do with Blue Mode, and I was hoping that Elevator "bug" was a Mario type secret passage (but you can still only go right there to a point!)
- if it's humor, I get it, but I was confused by not seeing any effect from the Fairy, or Squeaky Shoes.
- Really generous checkpointing - it could have been far worse with the 3-5 lives then back to way back!
- Clever use of Left Only. I'm trying to remember if I've seen t hat again yet after playing a bunch. So the rotating platforms are simple enough in reg platforms, but then you discover you botched the angle going too far left and can't fix it!
reminded me a lot of DLC quest, but this game felt unique enough with its own style of humor.
i recognized the elevator music! "the girl from iponema" or something
the only thing i didnt like was the blind pit jumps you had to make. srsly man, im not psychic!
the permanent squeaky shoes had me laughing out loud. most hilarious "upgrade" I've ever seen in a game!
congrats on first ludum dare!
@d1gital-cuts Hey thanks for checking it out! I'm interested in what you say about the checkpoint placement I tried to place them just before any new obstacles, was there one in particular you felt needed another one? I'm trying to revise the game a bit for a post jam version so I'd love to hear your feedback
@pablotitan Thanks Pablo, I'm really glad you enjoyed it you can't go wrong with black, white and red right? haha.
@taophoenix haha most of the upgrades are just there for humor, where as the rest are either little gibs at common game mechanics "hat unlocked" for example it's a neat thing to have in games, but when you only want to move right it becomes a little frustrating. I also needed them for a checkpoint system and figured it would be more fun than a generic flag point or something.
@raitozan Thanks! That means a lot, I realise now after I've seen some other submissions that my idea wasn't the most original, but I'm glad people are saying my interpretation is standing out, that's super positive and I'm happy about that.
@dummydojo Thanks! I didn't think I was all that good with level design so it's reasurring people are enjoying that aspect. Thanks for checking it out
@cybikitty haha squishy round characters are my Jam, glad you enjoyed it
I played the postjam version and found the part with that moving platform on a chain to be extremely buggy and hard to get through. One time I even got bitten(because it kinda has a face) by a horizontally moving platform and it carried me all the way through the wall and back to the checkpoint! At first I thought that was intended, but the platform never came back through the wall to it's original trajectory until the restart.
Overall this is a quite fun game with a sense of humor. The color palette is very pleasing and that squash and stretch on the character looks really satisfying.
Maybe one thing: When looking up/down, the eye could also move up/down.
@moonroll Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@zepimppotatoe the trick is the limited color pallet - art and animation is pretty easy when you don't have to worry about getting the colors right - plus my character is a blob with legs solely because I didn't want to animate any arms too haha.
@t1a2z oh man thats some high praise! Thanks for checking it out that means a lot
@dmanzano101 super glad my humour is gelling with people nicely - I just put in stuff that makes me laugh and hope it hits haha. Thanks for checking it out
@bilalch213 Thanks I'm all about that squash and stretch so I'm glad people are enjoying it! Oh! also I just put up a tutorial on how to create the shading effect if you're interested in finding out how I made it.
@le-don Wow! Thanks! Thats some high praise thats awesome. Also thats great idea and something I should definitley put in - it seems so obvious now that I'm surprised I missed it I'll for sure stick that in the post jam version when I get chance.
@carsencraft thanks! I'm still a little worried that my platform placement could be better improved but it is what it is - something I could probably polish up in the post jam version when I get chance
@detectiveLosos haha! And ah! Thats a shame you found a bug with the platforms - seems like something I'll have to fix in the post jam version - it seems it's caused when a player gets lodged between two moving platforms - not too sure why it decides to fly off and place you back at a continue though - it looks super intended but it's straight up a bug...I mean feature haha. Thanks for letting me know I'll see what I can do.
@foolishfire That's such a nice comment thank you! I've had a lot of fun playing with other peoples LD entries so I'm glad people are interested in mine and genuinely enjoying it. Thanks again!
@joaop Thanks! I'm getting a lot of praise for the graphics and I feel super guilty, because it was mostly just a time saving keeping them down to 3 colors due to the LD time constraints - I'm glad people are liking them despite that though haha.
@hkspadez A lot of people brought this up - there was actually a camera shifting mechanic in the game - you could shift it up and down by pressing the up and down keys, but because I didn't explain it in game a lot of players missed it which is unfortunate - I changed it into an upgrade in the post jam version though. Thanks for the feedback
@artyom-volkov same to you I saw a playthrough of HONk yesterday and you squeezed in all sorts of things in such a short amount of time - super impressed. Thanks for checking out my game and good luck on the results
Quality work.

And I too fell prey to the elevator slide. Guess I should've checked the comments.
This is a neat idea though, but I wonder how well it would work on a full scale game.
After the intro, it'd probably just turn into a metroidvania of sorts.
Real neat intro either way.
@Gauphastus wow that's quite the complimenet thank you - Yeah like I said above it would be a great thing to move this into a full game at some point - but I'm a bit lost on where to take it outside of an odd repetitive loop - or maybe taking it in a different direction entirely and turning it into a roguelite or something haha

Awesome entry! Well Done!
I hope to see more in the future ! Keep up the good work !!
It's really nice to see what interesting stuff can be done if your options of movement are limited in a platformer.
The one thing I didn't enjoy that much was the choice of standard music (elevator music was good). And a fullscreen for WebGL would be nice!
But still, this is the best platformer I've played this LD!
Everything is spot on! Congratz!
Thanks for submitting your game for me to play on my livestream!

Started with nothing, finished with everything!
Honestly, this is such a great game! I wish the game went on for a little longer, but nonetheless awesome! I can't wait to see what you come up with in your next game!
