tile.flip() by Move127

[raw]
made by Move127 for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

Description

tile.flip() is a puzzle game, inspired by Minesweeper. Click on tiles to flip them, but tiles also flip some of their adjacent tiles. Your goal is to flip every tile over to the black side, unless that tile is a bomb. Flipping over a bomb will result in "game over." Try to complete each puzzle as quickly as possible.

Theme

I tried to think of games that already exist and are both simple and fit the theme. Minesweeper came to mind because starting with no information about the puzzle leads to an interesting randomness in your starting position. I tried to replicate that randomness that originates from a lack of information with tile.flip().

Tutorial

Just click on the white square to begin the game. There is not in game tutorial because (i) I didn't have time and (ii) I tried to make the game simple enough that people can figure it out quickly on their own.

I couldn't understand the use of the theme, but after reading the explanation, I agree that starting a puzzle game like this with no information does lead to interesting randomness. Great job implementing the theme, and making a rather unique game!

Cool concept, i like it. It will probably be quite hard to do level generation, unless it is already random

Nice, the most addictive game I've seen yet.

@zwodahs level generation is already random

really ? nice ! I kind of encounter the same stage multiple time. Will definitely replay this later since i now know it is random

@zwodahs given the way the rules are set up, there aren't a lot of possible solvable puzzles for small boards. So, it is likely that the random generation will spit out the same ones.

The idea is a quite nice. It took me quite a while to figure out how the game actually worked though. I was just clicking randomly and dying without understanding for about 5 minutes. :( Maybe some more explanation of how the game works would be good?
In particular, the start was confusing because I was just placing red blocks, and then I died. Maybe if the game started at the point where I can already see some symbols on screen, it would be easier to understand.
Another possibility would be a tutorial level with no bombs, so you can get used to the flipping mechanic without dying all the time.
Minimal aesthetics are quite nice too. Overall, a nice puzzle game!

I would write in your submission post a little more about what the symbols on the tiles mean. Apart from that nice entry!

Have to agree with these other people that a tutorial wouldn't hurt. I found it difficult to understand exactly what the different colors and symbols meant, but after playing around a while I think I got a general idea. Clicking around mindlessly to try and understand the pattern isn't super fun, but once you get it it's pretty fun to play the game, especially I found the smaller puzzles engaging. The stopwatch is a really nice addition, makes it easy to track how well you're doing adds a lot of replayability. I think one downside of having randomly generated levels is that you'll sometimes have levels where you just have to guess your way through, unless I'm missing something (example below)

Overall it's a pretty solid entry, clean graphics and fun gameplay when you understand it

Once I understood the colors and symbols (Which in itself was pretty entertaining to do) I really enjoyed the game. It's always really cool to see something so simple yet so unique, it truely feels like an elemental design that should have existed for a long time, and yet I haven't seen Minesweeper + Block flipping puzzles together before. Great job!

Looks like a nice game, but I really couldn't figure it out.

@marcus-otterstrom Thanks for the detailed comments! You're not wrong about the having to guess. I wanted to get rid of levels like that, but unfortunately I ran out of time. Adding in the bomb count was the one thing I did to try to reduce the amount of guessing. However, it doesn't help with the kind of level you found.

This is a good minesweeper! i like it a lot but at the same time it was hard to understand at first, anyway i got into the fourth level and is a cool mechanic to rotate slots depending from the shape, great work :v:

Looks like webgl build broken. There are only black screen with UI.
But windows one works fine. Simple, but enjoyable concept.

Neat play on minesweeper. Graphics are spot on and fit the bill. brief tutorial would be really neat, could see this doing well on mobile.

Puzzle games are tough to make feel intuitive, but I feel like I could figure this one out playing, and experimenting with the turn by turn play, so congrats there! The simple shapes and style was nice as well.

@team-on Hmmm, I wonder what's going on. It loads properly on my side with Chrome. What browser are you using?

WebGL worked fine for me - that was, if anything, pretty fun. I think it took me far too long to make sense of how to actually play the game. I played for about 10 minutes, but I still feel like I'm missing a core element of the game: "Actually detecting when I'm about to get a bomb"

The 5x5 levels are pretty tough - trying to get the flips to work without accidentally flipping a potential bomb, but it was still really enjoyable.

Additionally - if you click a bomb on the first click, you should probably just regenerate the map until the first click simply doesn't have a bomb underneath it. Either that, or shift the randomized representation over by one.

It was pretty gun I GUESS since I think I still havent figured out all the core mechanics. I really think a tutorial, even written could be a huge help to dive in your game! Smooth graphics and animations though!

Nice idea. A bit confusing how to figure which pieces is bombs. Also no idea how to progress to next level. 🤣

I agree with @marcus-otterstrom , when i figured it out, there would be many situations like this and then it got frustrated, because i thought i understand the game, but the game wont acknoledge that. Other than that it is simple, beautiful and cool.

My background is in tabletop games and I love me a solid game mechanic. It just works! I have to point out, however, that I ran into a couple of occasions that the symbols did not stay on the tile after re-flipping, ruining the flow of the game a little bit.
