Keep Me Breathing by AstroLabe

[raw]
made by AstroLabe for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

banner.png

Finally, it's here!

We all 3 hope you will enjoy our game. It's our first Game Jam and so, our first Ludum Dare.

Have fun!

Your spaceship has suffered serious damage and the air recycling system is now out of service. The only way for you and your crew to survive until repairs is to grow plants to produce oxygen. Keep them alive long enough to grow so they can keep you breathing in return!

Note regarding the RGB sliders: - The color changes only happend 1 slider at a time. Which means you don't have to move every slider to try and get the right color. - They are additive colors, which means adding Red + Green will get you Yellow. Start with the sliders set to black and play around to better understand how they work !

great job. At first I thought this was going to be a stressful puzzle game. Then I was like oh this is mellow. The music was relaxing. It was fairly simple controls. Then the difficulty rampped up and I was not mistaken. Great job with the music and the graphics. I really enjoyed the game.

The music was gorgeous! The sound of the buttons switching and being pressed got a little mixed in with the music, but that wasn't too bothersome, it actually was kind of cool. Turning the temperature knob wasn't too intuitive, I didn't realize you had to click to the right or left of it, so maybe you could turn it into three buttons instead of a knob? I kept trying to drag the knob instead of just clicking it. As cool as all of it is-- the beauty of the graphics and the music -- there is very little variation, and it took a long time to finish the game; the same three mechanics got a little boring after a few minutes. But great job, it's really nice to listen to and look at!

I really enjoyed this game. The controls were fun to use. The RGB picker was my nightmare, especially near the end! I loved the soundtrack throughout the menus and I didn't think it was repetitive. The only thing that was kind of annoying, was the clipping sound when the audio track looped in the tutorial screen. Bravo guys :)

Tried to comment earlier and the site died.

I love the art, the audio, the concept, everything! My only issue is that it was incredibly difficult to color match (and would be next to impossible for those who are colorblind).

Overall, Excellent work! At a slower pace / easy mode, i could see this as being a mini-task as part of a much larger game.

Cheers!

Wow. WOW! Overnight the comments and ratings are almost doubled!! That's huge for us!
As said in our description, this is our first game jam and so Ludum Dare!!
So... Agin... Thank you, thank you for your support, positive review and we hope ratings!!
I saw some of us were complaining about the light/color system, that's understable. We had some issues with the balancing of this game mechanic, so we do apology for that... :(

Also, we did not have any time to implement a colorblind option to include all people, and we are sorry for that too!

Again, thank you for all, it REALLY means a lot, especially during the current situation :)

Cheers!

That was enjoyable. Matching the color was quite hard, but managed to grow the plant and save the station on first try. In fact I think I deserve a medal. I got one in another space station game. I'll give your game three thousand stars and rate this game as mega extreme plus. Also, the plant was cute.

Love the micromanagement but wow the color part is hard. Art is spot on and so is the music.
21. Apr 2020 · 06:53 UTC
Really good game. Very impressive. The art is amazing and the music is good too. The concept of using the sliders to get the color was very original and I don't think I've ever seen that before. I thought "anxiety increases as oxygen decreases" was a humor touch.

You really have to be fast!
Not sure if it's a "feature" or a bug, but the temperatur control can't be set to a hold-state like it starts with and the water control just fills completly with one click, so it`s not really manageable to control that.

But overall really liked it.
Kinda reminds me on the good old games in my childhood

21. Apr 2020 · 15:04 UTC
Hello @lloydcorfex , thanks for playing. Could you describe more precisely the problems your encountered and precise the version you played (web/32/64 bits) ?

We tested it many times across the development so I can ensure you that what you describes are not normal behaviours. Temperature have an hold state, just click the other side of the button, and water can't be filled by holding the button so we are a bit confused about how you achieved this.

If this is a real bug, we'll surely take a look at.

Really cool concept! I've also got an idea for a feature: Have something to play around with, which does absolutely nothing. So that when you have everything under control, you have some distraction (like on the hearthstone maps).

Really enjoyed this! The graphics and overall style are really nice. The music doesn't loop exactly, there's a fraction of a second causing a slight stutter. Matching the colour was difficult, maybe there's a clearer way of showing us what we need to do. Great work though!

This game was really really fun, I loved it. The art was really good, and the music was really good overall it was really good and polished. Only problem was the RBG part of it, but i liked how that was challenging because the other stuff wasnt that challenging, but the RBG part of it was since i had no idea how to get to color so i actually had to figure it out! Nice job!

21. Apr 2020 · 19:18 UTC
We love the color palette you choosed for the game :) It took us 4 attempts to finally save the plant and it was really nice to play. The RGB matcher is hard to control at first, but once you get used to it the game feels pretty well balanced. Congrats!

21. Apr 2020 · 20:18 UTC
Great simplistic game. The temp was a little confusing how you had to click on one side or another to change it. I kept trying to toggle it. The RBG was a little difficult and I felt that it could have left a little more room for error. But that would be hard to do so I understand. A lot of fun!

This was such a beautiful experience, when the alarms were going off it actually had me worrying about keeping the plant alive! I love how the music evolves as the plant grows, especially as it first kicks in as the sapling starts growing! The art is amazing and the gameplay was fairly easy to grasp. The only thing that I started to become frustrated with is some colours i had no idea how to make. It was easy enough if it was like a solid green, yellow, blue etc. but when it starting asking for purples and things, id be scrambling around with the meters unable to find the right colour until it died. I think maybe a hint to which bar should be moved might of helped. Overall great job! :D

Great entry into the spinning plates genre. I like how the inputs into each of the variables is different to keep things interesting. One thing to be careful of is when you are working with colors as an important game mechanic, as even though my color vision works great, many people cannot say the same. And even though I'm not color blind, the margins between whats good and not seemed really small. I really liked the graphics and audio, they made a really great combo!

Beautifully done artwork. The audio was nice. The concept was great, I especially loved the RGB slider mechanic. It seems like a somewhat difficult game to balance however. My plant died because the temperature gauge kept fluctuating rapidly and it didn't matter how fast I was at changing it, the temp wouldn't go up/down fast enough to reach it in time before it died. Overall though, phenomenal job!

Wooow, this was very fun! I really loved the graphics (although the text font was so wide that it was hard for me to read). I loved the RGB slider, so fun. It was just difficult because the plant took damage as soon as sliders started changing, maybe give some time like 2 seconds to adjust the slider before the plant starts taking damage. I still managed to beat the game on the first try though :)

I really liked the art and the music! I also really appreciated the little tutorial at the beginning of the game. I think the game follows the scene very well and is very unique.

It also made me realize that I didn't know what color combination makes yellow, so thanks for teaching me that today :)

22. Apr 2020 · 15:10 UTC
Thats was very nice and relaxing. But a bit hard with colors, but when I got used to it it was okay. The text in the tutorial was really hard to read because of the font, but everything was clear even without it. I honestly couldn't read it, too much text. Maybe it would be better to show it on the game, like here's the temperature control, here's this and that. But the game is amazing anw, good job!

Nice gameplay, matches the theme! Graphics are cute and it is relaxing. Two criticism, maybe the temperature knob could be change to buttons? because its controlling was little hard. And the gameplay could be bit faster, the difficult in 1-2mins could be easy, 2-3mins could be medium and 3-4 mins could be hard.

As a graphic designer by trade, I can really appreciate a game with some good RGB slider action

I really liked the atmosphere. I would not say it was relaxing, as I was constantly on my toes trying to meet the needs of this pickiest of plants. People who take up gardening as a hobby must be mad!

A very nice concept and executed well. Graphics are also nice and the changing plant stages feel natural. Good job!

Awesome! Very simple premise but great execution. Loved the part where you had to match the rgb color code correctly. That was by far the hardest mechanic of the game. Very stress inducing but fun! The art was very clean and polished, a marvel to look at. Soundtrack was top notch as well. Great job!

Was able to beat it on my first try, which is nice :) didn't overstay it's welcome, so I'd say the length of one run is perfectly balanced. Don't really have much else to say or criticize. Looks like you had enough time to polish and get everything working fine. Marvelous entry!

Really awesome entry!

I only have two pieces of feedback. The rest I absolutely love.

1) I'd say that sometimes the color and heat changing so quickly can be punishing. I think a mix of the heat changing fast sometimes and slow sometimes would be a nice change to try and track. The colors - I thought I knew decently - but maybe I'm just so used to using HSL or HSV - but can be a bit tough to get under pressure. I wouldn't say change that part much but maybe either a mix of fast and slow like suggesting with the heat, or some kind of hint/helper if it is red for so long.

2) I'm not sure the text at the beginning is necessary. The game is for the most part very intuitive. I would rather suggest more of a tutorial type introduction. First have to get the color correct without any pressure. Then that unlocks the temperature button. Then that unlocks the water button. Then it is full on game. Making it learn as you play.

Great job! Loved the art, sound, and overall theme/mood!

This was awesome! Ahhh i was so close to making it but sadly died close to the end. I like how the difficulty ramps up :) Maybe its be cool visibly showing the plant dying as you mess up the controls and its health decreases. Really nice!

This is a nice little game, and it would be fun to see it extended to encompass further difficulty levels. Overall the graphics and sound design were pleasant and fitting. The text for the intro bit was overlapping quite a lot in the fullscreen html version, but it wasn't an issue as everything was still readable (just mentioning it in case you weren't aware). I also appreciated how intuitive the game mechanics were, and thought the RGB slider was a really interesting inclusion. Well done!

Great game! I love the idea! Matching colors was quite difficult I thought, but it was a good exercise. Love the art style and the attention to detail. Music and sound effects were great.

Well done!

Some of your tutorial canvases might have their text boxes wider than you like I think... (played on chrome, on my mac)

The game idea was unique and stuck to the theme pretty well. The art was pretty amazing, and the audio was fitting. I wish the tutorial was not as long because I think there was too much text ,and I also wish there was more to do (Just my opinion). Also how does a single plant release enough oxygen to keep a crew alive? Over all great job, and keep it up!

As others said there is to much text at the beginning. Otherwise it's a stunning entry. I like the way you turned such a simple thing to implement as colors into interesting mechanics.

Very nice idea completely in the theme. I love the contrast of taking care of a plant in a spaceship to survive. The art and music and controls are perfect. And the tutorial at the beginning is very clear. I didn't find any problems in this small game. Very well polished. It's like a finished one :) Congratulation, you three.

Really nice art style and music. I love how calm and relaxing it is when everything's good and how jarring the alarm sound is when things aren't (it might be even more effective to have the music fade out when the alarm starts and fade back in afterwards). Having to react quickly to all the different changes was really fun. I liked the colour theory mechanic too.

I really liked the graphics. Nice idea, in particularly the color one. Maybe the game was a little too fast. By the way, well done!

I really enjoyed this game, sometimes these kind of plate spinning games can be frustrating or give me anxiety but this was balanced so that I just really enjoyed myself throughout the experience :)

I love it so much! I don't even have anything else to add because as a Jam game I think it has basically everything!
