Although the game is simple, my daughters are fighting to play first :)
This game made me laugh aloud immediately. It also scared the hell outta me cuz I didn't know the knife was gonna come so fast. This is literally the best reskin of the Battletoads race level I've ever seen. How much further does it go beyond my score? I wanted to try more but I was getting hypnotized by the game in my post-jam state. Overall a very well done game and the best one I played so far. Amazing job from a new team, you got a lot of 5 stars from me :)
The difficulty is also well adjusted, it's "easy" but it pushes you to make misstakes. I made it to 120 :)
Good job! :)
I imagine this on my phone, and i'm pretty sure that everyone would play that at least multiples time!
The controls are a bit laggy, but maybe it's what you want (you can't roll then jump really fast, but that's how the game is made).
Animations are good, and timing too, honestly this is a very good work !
One of my favorites so far i got a highscore of 65. Nice Art nice sounds and the controlls feel good.
quick tip: on itch.io set the Embed options to "click to launch in fullscreen" to make the fullscreen work better for everyone.
tip for everyone in the current verion: if you want to play fullscreen, wait for the game to load then hit the blue arrows and not the transparent white ones that are overlayed.

I think this is the record so far?
@everyone come and take it :)
then @ me so i can take it back xD
Love how the game tricking you makes it challenging, even if the mechanics are technically simple. This definitely made me giggle.
One thing I would say is around timing - might be worth adding a super super small window where even though it would technically be a miss, it gets considered as a good move. This would add a very rewarding "almost hit, but saved it" feel to the player that might be worth exploring.
Overall, fantastic entry!
This is our first game jam, and every single comments you make means so much to us. :two_hearts:
@dovahkciin thank you, and sorry for the negative lives haha! We thought this was a very minor and fun bug so we did not prioritize it :fire:
@lykawolfie Thank you! We tried the best we could, but indeed I think there would still be work to do on the "clear and responsive" feeling of the jump! :fish:
@peachtreeoath Thank you so much! The last difficulty level is triggered at 200! But please go try other games, I hope that everyone will get comments as great as the one we receive!
@brylamare Thank you! We thought of allowing jumping and moving together, but did not do it for several reasons, one of the major ones being the enemy AI would need to be very different and very aggressive to keep the game challenging, thus removing the rhythmic feeling we got here. Also, it would require a lot more work on animations to make them feel coherent. We thought of being able to cancel every move on early frames, but this was one of the many many things that was not prioritized and did not make the cut :knife:
@ausstein thanks for the tip! But wouldn't that make it awkward for people who want to play it in their browser and not fullscreen? I think I will make a mockup itch page and try all options to see which one feels best. It's my first time uploading a game, a friend helped me with the html version but I guess I still need to learn a lot!
@marcin-godzina Thank you so much! We are thinking about that, I will let you know if there is an android version coming! We do not want to monetize though so that would not be on any app store I believe.
@ausstein impressive! the difficulty shift at 150 really is something eh? :anger: The current best score we know about is 207!
@sndr Thank you! There actually is such a window, but it is only a few frames! You are right that it might need some adjustment :tools:
@everyone, thank you so so much, I feel like I am living a dream :rainbow:
I improved my Highscore to 164 but i keep dying to early difficulties because they are too slow to pay real attention. Maybe you could add a Starting dificulty option like in tetris :)
I'll beat the 207 tomorrow ;)
Keeping the fish alive definitly hits the theme and the graphics and the music is matching. And i had a lot of fun with the soon to be sushi!

and

and

Finally I did it!!

Tell who ever had the 207 to get the record back :D
Excellent job!

Wonderful graphics, nice audio, fun graphics, you have it all covered. Great job!
Ps. I suck at this game but I still enjoyed it, will come back and try to improve my score

The difficulty increase around 150 is surprising, the increase around 200 is insane!
I think you pulled it of really well. Super nice aesthetics and audio. Great humourus vibe and nice snappy gameplay. Well done!
Awesome!
I'm a huge fan of the Rhythm Tengoku series and found myself quite at home here even though I could not tell if action was actually synced with the music (which is excellent by the way). The art style is very cute and coherent, and everything regarding telegraphing hazards is spot on.
Probably my favorite one so far, congrats and thank you!
Thank you everyone for your nice comments and constructive feedback.
We are not sure what the project is going to become yet, we will decide as a team and wanted to give ourselves some breathing time before! We will give updates on the possible future of the game via itch.io if there is such a future, so feel free to follow us there!
@javasaurus, thank you! We had similar comments about the "only japanese" aspect. For those who are still wondering, here are the approximate translations of most words:
- "Start" at the beginning
- "Faster" at each difficulty level bump
- "Ouch" when hit by a knife
- "Hot" when hit by a blowtorch
- "Bon appétit" on the score and credits menus
@krassenstein, thank you! The ideas you gave are actually near the top of our backlog if we decide to continue the project.
@aurel300, thank you! The music is indeed not ours, that is why we are not rated on it. You can find info on the 3 musics used in the credits menu if you like one of them! The one during gameplay is Yume O Yume by Reiswerk.
@marcusnystrand and @rongefilet, thank you for the comparison with those awesome games.
@everyone, thank you so much once again! :two_hearts:
Is the music original? That's very authentic sounding, and really adds something to the game ( and the humour! )
We have big news for you today.
**Android version**
Flippy Fish is now available on Android!
The apk file is available here on itch, and the game is waiting for Google's approval and will soon be live on Google Play!
**Big first update**
All the great feedbacks we received from irl friends and awesome internet people led us to this first big update. Here are the major changes:
- **Difficulty modes**
Want to relax a bit and enjoy more of this awesome music by reiswerk? Calm mode is here for you! We believe this might be the best way to play the game for younger players or people not very familiar with video games. Tell us what you think!
You are a crazy person and found Flippy Fish too easy for you? We got you covered and added Fishy mode! Share your highscore with friends for increased brag potential.
Other difficulty tweaks have been made, such as making torches a bit less hard to avoid in all modes, or an invulnerability window when hit.
- **QOL updates on controls**
We added a buffer window to help you control Flippy with perfect precision!
- **Menu makeover**
All menu went through some work to better please your cute eyes.
- **On / Off sound control**
You can now toggle sound on or off in game.
- **Bug fixes**
Music not looping, pause menu slowing the game instead of really pausing, negative lives... Flippy doesn't really like bugs, so we had to ask them to go away. Let us know if you find sneaky ones that we couldn't see.
We are all very happy to go on this adventure with you. This is our first game and seeing people enjoy it makes us really happy.
@everyone **Thank you so much**. 💕

The animation, art style, music, gameplay and humor are all spot on.
I got 172:

Brilliant take on the theme, with amazing art and a simple but addicting and FUN af mechanic that got increasingly challenging. Loved your music choice, it matched the art well too.
I failed spectacularly the first time, but I managed to reach 217 on my third playthrough in the web version

Amazing job, I love this game!

I'm sorry that I can't find any constructive feedback to give for this entry, lol.. I really think it's release ready
Very well done. A whole game, challenging, compelling, and very polished.
amazing game
The gameplay is simple and it's easy to play. I like how you slowly increase the difficulty! Had a lot of fun playing and evading the chef.
Very well done for your first entry. This is a great achievement!

It is simple and fun. Well done! If I wish for one thing it's that we could jump and roll at the same time
Got a highscore of 294.
I saw you are looking for some HTML5 games to try, maybe you could have a look to mine. Thanks! :)
I'm writing an analysis. :)

A narrativa é simples e direta, sendo bem-humorada. Apenas sobreviva enquanto tentam lhe preparar (engraçada é a cara do peixe no final, quando perde, hahahahah).
3 - Cultura:
Hahahahah.
1 - Mechanics, Learning and Flow:
The mechanics are simple and easy to learn (jump and roll to stay alive longer) (it's just difficult to master the gameplay).
A world scoreboard would be very nice for this type of game (after LD time).
The game flow seemed balanced as far as I played. :) I would like new interactions to emerge over time.
I didn't fully understand the purpose of the "learn more" button in the credits. I would like you to open another page instead of removing it from the game (I don't know if it was a mistake here or if it was that, hahahahah). :)
2 - Graphics, Audio and Narrative:
The graphic art was good and very clear when transmitting the concept. The typeface could be improved in some points (just one or the other character, which became somewhat ambiguous, "d" and "o").
I really liked the soundtrack (they didn’t put it to vote, so I don’t think it’s authorial or entirely authorial), anyway the choice was good. The credits' music (among other tracks and funny sound effects) is especially fun.
I would like to suggest that you work up and down the volume instead of cutting the music in the menu transition (I think it would give a more immersive effect). :)
The narrative is simple and direct, being humorous. Just survive while trying to prepare it (funny is the face of the fish at the end, when it loses, hahahahah).
3 - Culture:
This game talks to several other games regarding the humorous and quick-thinking challenge. Congratulations. \ o I hope the team continues the project after the event time.
4 - Monetization:
I believe that the game (with the proper extension of content and authorial audio) could sell well for smartphones. Hahahahah.
