Unnatural Selection - Circle of Life by Robinerd

[raw]
made by Robinerd for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

At the end of our universe, on a tiny cube, life has appeared.

But the circle of life works differently here.

You select who will pass on their genes.

Instructions

  • Select the best creatures as parents, by clicking them.
  • Click "Next Generation" to create offspring with similar features as the selected parents.
  • Orbs are collected when a creature touches them.
  • You cannot control the movement directly, you must rely on evolution.
  • Win by collecting all orbs.

All content made by me during the compo.

I love the idea! It's so fun to just pick random ones and seeing what monsters they change into.

I really love the music and mood in this. I'm still listening to it while writing this. Excellent work! It took some generations, but I managed to breed some fast moving creatures and collect all the orbs.

Really cool concept, visual evolutionary algorithms, I think the colours could have been a bit less dark, but it didn't affect the fun I had watching them grow. However I thought the orbs would be reset each round, so you had to build the ultimate orb collector species, but it was easier with them gradually going away, so less frustration = more fun. Good game.

I had a lot of fun with this game. Putting the player in genetic algorithm's shoes is a really clever idea. And I do believe it would be easy for players to get into it, even if they don't know this stuff.

@robinerd I've tried to play, but didn't manage anything alive :D Maybe I'm bad from evolution perspective :) But as a big fan of Spore I do like the idea and respecting your game :) Well done

I spent too much time on this, actually not doing much :D
I really love the concept, some of them grow up and it's really satisfying to see them go for the orbs and get them.
Not sure if it's by chance or not, but managed to finish the game.

Anyways, really great entry.
cheers

Well, that's a weird game. Brilliantly weird. The type of game I was looking for when browsing compo games. I'm not sure how genetics work in this game, but it was fun to make new species. It can be an addictive idle game if you add more creature features. It's fun to watch them grow, you know.

Haha, this is great. The creatures that I had the most success with definitely didn't match what I was initially going for in the beginning; love it when a game ends up subverting your expectations like that.

I have always enjoyed these kind of games where creatures evolve, so i spent quite some time playing it and i actually enjoyed it. Really nice music, very atmospheric. Perhaps a bit slow.. but these kind of games tend to be that way :)
