Isle of Light by Lexi89

[raw]
made by Lexi89 for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Crack open some rum and sit by the fire on the Isle of Light :fire:

Survive on this mini paradise with stuff that gets washed ashore.

Keep the fire lit, cook food, boil water, and don’t forget to put on the tunes.

Oh, and watch out for crabs :crab:

Move - WASD. SPACE for everything else

Very peaceful and relaxing little time on an island. Graphics look great. The Hawaiian sound track seems a little louder than the other track. I recommend adjusting the volume so they're around the same.

Damn, soo atmospheric :) Losing conditions could be a bit softer for my taste, as the game feels so relaxing.. I really love it though !

I was going crazy until I found the mixtape. This one is one of the most immersive games in LD46. It has very nostalgic vibes. I felt that it was my last day alone in the universe and, well, you gotta make do with what you have. So good! Kudos to the creator.

Such a calm and soothing game! Great job! At the beginning you could have pointed out to the bottle with the message. But overall the game was great.

Really liked the artistic setup you did chose for the minimalistic style that you picked. I liked the central setup with the bonfire in the middle throwing these long shadows, this underlines the main interest point of your game (the fire) quite elegant. Also the hawaii music fits perfect and gives a really good vibe!

Some additional ideas:
- draw footprints on the sand from characters: makes your island even more alive and helps the player guiding his eyes to running crabs that are maybe already hiding in the shadows.
- play more with color and light for floating items that are approaching your island. for example you could highlight items with light sources (old oil lamps, fireflies etc.).
- more advanced gameplay ideas: you could play more with the principle of shadows and the behavior of your character (crabs maybe want to move in shadow or behave differently in the shadow). then you could bring the position of the light as a new gameplay element (the player maybe can make torches and needs to place them in certain strategical positions to control the enlightening of his island).

overall really strong approach for the staging of the game, I would try to build up on that :)

I was able to re-lit my fire at the same time I got the death screen, I was so sad!
This is a almost stressful since you see you food and water gauge going down relatively fast, I had no time to look for crates or so.

I really likes the tape you can play in the radio.
(I had problems running on Firefox, but it worked fine in Chrome, but a lot of WebGL games do.)

Really liked this one, reminds me of the game I made for Global Game Jam a couple of years ago, very similar graphics and gameplay. I had fun with this, it wasn't too complicated or too easy, it felt nicely balanced and played very well with no bugs that I encountered. Great job!

I love the idea of this game, graphics and music, but I found it very frustrating (but perhaps that was a point?).

I figured out bucket at first, then found a radio and a tape (nice add!), then a message in the bottle and a crab which I was able to kick (!). I searched whole beach and found nothing else to interact with, but I managed to stuck between the bottom palm tree and a rock more than once. Also the palm on the left catapulted me through the air few times and I wasn't able to move back to the ground level for a while.

I played the game more than 10 times and found nothing more to interact with. Maybe better indication where to look for something would be nice. Or a sound that something came ashore?

Best,
Anna from 4boa team

Great game! I realy like the atmoshpere. I am a bit sad, because I would like to enjoy a bit more before dying! Nevertheless, trying to survive is a lot of fun! :) The scene could be a bit brighter, since I had to close all shutters to see the edge of the island.

I agree with everyone who loved the atmosphere - It was nice to kick back, listen to some music, and enjoy some island living! The low-poly look works really well for the mood you set!

One thing I wished I was able to do was put down food/drink without consuming it - I would often pick up a bucket of water off the fire to make room for a fish that had washed ashore, and it felt a little bit bad to be forced to drink it when my hydration was still full.

I missed the note with instructions that had washed ashore on my first playthrough - It might be good to place that more prominently on the island, but the controls were self-explanatory enough that I didn't feel lost, despite never seeing the instructions. Good job! :)

Very atmospherical game, well polished too!

Found it hard to survive since either wood or food goes out quickly enough, but enjoyed it nonetheless with some hawaian tapes playing in the background!

Love the graphics, sound, and general atmosphere of the game. The controls showing up after you get the bottle wasn't very intuitive, so I'm glad you put the instructions on the page right under the player (and especially kept it simple!)

It's an amazing game. It's a life I like very much. It's quiet and relaxing, but there are too few boards in the game, and this crab is really damn. Part of that is the recorder, you can play music by putting different tapes, this is the best in the audience

Nice game, I didn't play it but followed a twitch streamer playing it. I like the overall idea and the graphics, but as the streamer pointed out the game is a bit too dark and the lack of a timer kinda removes the purpose of the game. Good work tho!

Being stranded on a small island is a really neat take on a survival game. The music was chill and the actions were simple but well-balanced. I lived for a decent period of time then died of hunger. Nice game!

This game has a really nice feel, and the graphics suit it really well. The letter was funny. I like the crates. The game has a good concept and is well implemented. A small bug sometimes stops me from kicking crabs. Overall, it was great.

Amazing! Love the atmosphere, the sentimental music fits perfectly, being able to change the music is a nice touch. I didn't really notice anything negative, except that the objects floating in the water were sometimes a bit glitchy. Loved playing every second, thanks for making this! :)
