Gameplay

You control a crab on a beach playing field. On the left side, turtle babies will hatch from their eggs and start crawling towards the ocean. From the top and bottom seagulls will spawn periodically over time that want to eat the turtles.

You can defend the turtles by building sand towers along their path. Towers are occupied by other crabs and have different kinds of projectiles or waves that will work as auto turrets for you. Towers can also be upgraded to further improve their efficiency and effectiveness. For building and upgrading towers you need seashells which you earn by defeating seagulls. If you misplaced a tower or need space you can also destroy them which will give you their initial cost back.

Additionally you can also detach and throw your own claw as a boomerang to attack seagulls yourself.

If a seagull reaches a turtle, it will grab it and try to fly away with it. Once the seagull reaches the top or bottom border, the turtle is lost for good. If you defeat the seagull before it can escape, the turtle will drop and continue crawling.

Win condition

You win the game if you manage to keep the majority of the baby turtles alive. If more than 30 turtles die you lose the game.

Tips

  • The UI shows you many important numbers, including remaining unhatched eggs, the number of turtles that successfully reached the ocean, and how many turtles you can lose before losing the game.
  • The UI also shows a minimap for an easy overview on the whole beach area.
  • The minimap also indicates from where enemies will soon spawn in with an exclamation mark.

Technical details

  • The game was made in Unity 2D.
  • All used graphics and sounds have been made by ourselves.

I haven't played a lot of tower defense games, but I really liked the way that you guys innovated on the genre. It was fun to be able to move around and place the tiles manually, and the crab throwing its arm like a boomerang was really funny. The graphics reminded me of a flash game, make of that what you will. Good job team!

Lot of fun to be had here, great take on a tower defence game! This was probably the game that I played for the longest of everything I've tried so far. Good job!

I really like your game. The music and mood/humor were awesome. Very clean and polished.

Had a little trouble upgrading towers. It showed green on the tool tip but wouldn't allow me to upgrade it.

My favorite game so far. Really nice.

Pretty fun! I like the sort of active tower defense where they can be coming from any direction so you have to really have a good setup on all sides. I didn't really get a lot of shells until I was down many turtles, but once I started really building a lot that last bit of the game lasted a while. The music and sound are a little repetitive but overall good entry!

Great game concept and great execution. I just wish there was some sort of in game tutorial that walked you through the difference between all of the towers and introduced things slowly over time. I get it is a jam game but no one enjoys having to read an essay in order to be able to play. Also the graphics are great, very cute

I loved the camera movement :) The song is nice but comes to boring after sometime (i have this "problem" with almost all games, even AAA games, so its understandable).
Really nice game. Graphics and mechanic was very well done! Congratulations!

Very polished, well done. It's frantic and you don't want those little turtle friends to get taken. I'd like the towers to be more bombastic maybe, but that's a small critique. Well done.

Very fun game, nice graphics and gameplay and became very frantic by the end. The turtles were very cute so I was sad about each one that was stolen :( Very good job!

Great job! I'm impressed that this was only made in a weekend. The main music got repetitive quickly. Gameplay was addictive and built pretty well. I felt umbrellas were the best strategy.

I like turtles!

Cool tower defense-y game! Really liked how the difficulty curve kept ramping up. And also the inclusion of the crab dance. All in all great work!

Great work. Maybe some kind of build/upgrade circle around the crab to help people know that you can only build within a certain radius or just have the crab move to the build location.

Maybe higher towers could force the birds to go around them to give the game the full TD walls of towers affect.

Nice entry. This twist on the typical tower defense is enjoyable and the speed-up on the music is a nice touch too. Polished and well-packaged. After three plays, my best score was 430 saved. (So close, only ~15 eggs unhatched)

Three nitpicks (because it's a good enough entry that I'm down to just nitpicks!) - 1) The title screen shows a rather funny crab grabbing a seagull. I want that as a tower! 2) I saw a few comments that didn't understand how the upgrades worked. My guess is that it's not clear that you have to be in range, since I continually had this problem when the I lost my crab in the fray. Suggestions: Color/mark the player in a slightly different way from the tower crabs so it is easier to find (different color, circle underneath it, etc.) and when in place/upgrade mode maybe mark the max distance you can target towers somehow. 3) On my first playthrough I couldn't quite understand what the different towers did so I eventually tried to just use urchins (poison?) and umbrellas (long range?). I came back to the game page and read the descriptions and it all made sense from there. Tooltips on mouseover perhaps?

A nice entry with a lot of character! Enemies could be a bit more varied, but I like the different kinds of towers.
