it's a very nice game
Good job :)
Really impressed with how you pulled it off! The graphics/mood are really nice and consistent. The level design is also great - and things are pretty dynamic with the rising water levels etc. I know that kind of stuff can be fiddly to get working, and it's really slick here - great work!
I'm biased towards liking this take on the theme, but I think you totally killed it! Very polished and well-realised.
As far as constructive criticism, it would have been nice to have a more detailed main character sprite, but the silhouette direction you went with works really well stylistically as a stand-in. Some of the platforming (mostly the springs) felt a tad slippery, also.
First I found the character controller a little bit slippery it was a little bit hard to control at first
The showers trigger themselves instantly which is kinda upsetting at time, It would be nice to have like a little animation like the propeller starting to rotate before. It happends to me that I died even before the actual water was touching my fire and it was frustrating.
Other than that I think it's an excellent entry, what you did compared to the time we have is amazing, there is art, animation, sounds, two different music, 10 different level with different features, and some teaching. Great great work, keep it up !
my only real nitpick is that i wish the elevators stood out a bit more, as i'd always fail to realise what they are my first time around and submerge.
:)
The only thing that I would criticize is the difficulty. Failing is very easy and being reset to the start can be frustrating when being thrown in an unknown situation and dying. The levels aren't all that long but often include waiting and standing around which makes replaying the levels very tedious. Maybe adding checkpoints would help in some of the levels to reduce possible player frustration. But thats really a minor issue and easily fixed with a little more time invested in level balancing and play testing.
All in all, very impressive entry. Especially considering you made this alone.
My only wish is that you wouldn't immediately lose if you touch a bad thing, like, maybe have just a second of reaction time so you can course correct or do something; it feels a bit punishing as it is.
But really, amazing job!
I think my only slight criticism might be just the control scheme is a little off, but that might just be a me thing. Using the arrow keys was fine, but having my fingers on A, S, and X seemed a bit off. Maybe something like Z, X, C might do better, or any combo where all your fingers are on one line on the keyboard, I don't know. Clearly I'm just nitpicking at this point. The game overall was great as-is.
@kiln honored to be compared to Zelda, and sorry about the controls, that's the kind of thing just a little play-testing would have helped me with but jams ya know? Glad you enjoyed though!
@joe40001 thanks a lot for the kind words, glad you liked the art/music that much :) I'm no professional so it makes me happy to hear I can impress people haha
