Cute theme - gameplay is easy to pick up, pieces of the car a little less so. :) Congratulations on the submission!

Wow it's a nice project! Collisions are cruel, and re-picking a part wasn't obviously bad so it's a bit frustrating. But except that, models and UI are pretty, there is a complete soundtrack, the theme fit is great and everything works well! Congrats for such good work

At first i didn't understand what I am supposed to do other than avoiding obstacles, but then I saw the car parts on the side. It was mostly my fault as I didn't read the instructions before I started playing.

I think the car parts should stand out a bit more, but other than that good job!

I really like the little guy floating above the road! If this would be a full game with a lot of dev time, I would make an intro animation where the guy is getting into his invisible car :blue_car:

The game is very simple, but what I really like that the car parts are acting as lives. Nice idea!

Cute little game! I like the feedbacks when you hit something and overall it's easy to get used to the game and to understand what to do (even if having to read lines of texts to get the rules is worse than a tutorial, but in this case it was not very long). I think the collisions detection might be a bit easier, sometimes I felt like I would not touch anything but I ended up colliding with an object I just crossed, but overall the game was working pretty well ! Maybe think of adding a replay button so that players do not have to go through the main menu to play again
Cool entry!

A good game idea based on the theme! I agree with the commenters above regarding finding the pieces you need. I would also try to make sure that the pieces dont spawn right next to an obstacle which makes i impossible to pick up. Oh, and I also experienced that all the lanes (and sidewalks were blocked, making it impossible not to crash. Otherwise, I enjoyed this. Well done!

The game is little bit laggy. I think the alone player has same collier as in whole car. The parts spawn in obstacles and sometimes there was no way to pass through..
But good game and good luck.

Nice spin on the theme. I also had an idea of 'racing game but you start without a car' but couldn't think of a good way to do it. Well, this is it! As others have said, car parts some times spawned inside other stuff which was a bit annoying.

Pretty nice. I was confused by what I was supposed to do at first, because when I tried to pick up car parts I got the crash sound, because the part was at the same place as a boulder or something.

Funny concept :) Hitboxes felt a little bit harsh to me (I swear I didn't bump that cow!). Sometimes I also ended up with an impossible item to pick up, like intricated in a rock. However I'm always impressed to see people able to manage 3D game in such a small amount of time. I like the idea that the elements of your car are also your life. But I couldn't be able to build it entirely. Is there a kind of ending when you do so?

This is hilarious. I love the idea and you did a great job implementing it. The only issue I had was the collision seemed a little off. I maneuvered into a lane after a car passed and it felt like I should have safely made it, but unfortunately I crashed. Maybe it was just bad judgement, but I thought I had let enough time pass to safely get in the lane. Great job!

Really funny game!
The hitbox was a bit unforgiving, and a lot of car parts were near impossible to get, but I dug the concept of building up the car in place of a health system. It's also unclear which car parts are which when I see them on the side of the road, and I'm going so fast I'm not even sure what I have? I think a HUD that displayed what parts of the car I had fulfilled as well as some sort of indicator over the pieces on the road telling me either what piece they are or whether or not I have them already would be super helpful.
Good times, though!

Haha, I laughed at the idea of not having a car and that I didn't stop him from racing down the street. I was always a fan of Outrun and the old school road scroller brought back some memories. Humor category scored good for me for the thought of a driving game with no car. I also like that he sits in the tree at the menu =) Clever to have the car parts available not only to pick up but also to act as lives as you progressed. Nice with low poly art too :) Good job!

[For reference, I played the original jam version.]

This is a fun little game! As others have said, it's surprisingly tricky to remember which pieces you've already picked up, especially when some of them look almost identical. The fact that the driver isn't sitting in the exact centre of the lane threw me, until I realised that of course he wouldn't be, he's in a car!

The low-poly graphics are charming, but I think the draw distance is a bit low; new obstacles very noticeably pop in. Having the driver sat in a tree on the "game over" screen was a really nice touch :joy:

The other criticism I have (and I think the post-jam version fixes this too?) is that the collisions feel off, and sometimes it registers a collision when I swear I haven't hit anything. I dunno whether it's because the hitbox is for the full-size car even when you only have the driver, or what, but it might be something to work on, because it doesn't feel right to me.

btw, is it possible to "win" the game by collecting all the pieces? Or do you just keep on driving in your finished car until it inevitably falls apart?

(P.S. the web version doesn't work, I just see a black screen with the UI over the top :( )

12. Oct 2019 · 18:11 UTC
I found the proposal of the game very interesting and fun, but I feel that the mechanics of losing the pieces just because the player already owns I found it a bit bad, because it gives the first impression that the game is buggy but it's a mechanic, I think it should have a bonus when catching and not a punishment. but overall I really enjoyed the game

@elmos-minion @mrerdalural @f1krazy @felipegeovani @yhi @ausstein @nikita-demidov Thank you for feedbacks, advices and comments guys and, of course, thank you so much for playing ! Glad you liked playing my game !

@mrerdalural Hi ! Thanks for the feedback on obstacle generation ! I did a first try to reduce impossible scenarios ! I'll improve it again bit in a future update. Can you tell me which version you played ?

@f1krazy Thank you for you very complete feedback ! For collision and car pieces visibility and car pieces remembering, I added some little things on the last updates ! About graphics, I'll try to find way to pop the objects in a more discreet way ! Like @ausstein saids, there is no "win" when you build the full car. But, if it's not a "win", build the full car could be an event, reward or bonus on the game !
For the web version, I didn't have the problem, so I think that it could be a browser problem. What browser are you using to play the game ?

@felipegeovani Thank you for your feedback about "picking twice the same pieces" ! I think that a part of the game difficulty is based on this mechanic. I will add a bonus when you build the full car in another update. But you're right about the fact that this rule looks like a bug. So I will add more obvious "collision indicators" or "collision feedbacks" to make this mechanics a little bit more clear for the player.

@nikita-demidov Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you ! You really help me guy ! I'm happy that the Mac OS version works ! I don't have a Mac but I use the Unity building system ( very useful ) to build for Mac !

@t-bo I believe the Highscore counter is glitched atm. In your first webgl version i scored 9000 with no problems. I last a lot longer on the current versions and rarely get over 500 (while lasting a lot longer than in the release version). Then sometimes I get 300 before i saw the first obstacle. I tested the windows versions (all 3 of them) and the highscore stays at 1 the whole time. Once it got to 4 but that was it.

Having the webgl version minimized while waving the mouse across the screen (sometimes) makes the score go similar to the initial version, but that can't really be the solution.

So somhow the score is not added consitently.
Moving the score counter into the fixedupdate method in unity could solve the problem. otherwise you could try multipying the updated score with time.deltaTime if you use the regular update or define a delta time yourself between when the score updated the last time.

Good luck bughunting ;)

Great fun, but I think obstacle spawn rate is tied to distance/gametime rather than progression through game? Perhaps it would be better if more obstacles spawned only when I pick up more parts, and less spawned if I started to lose a lot of parts.

How do you get scores so high?   Mine was something like 15k.

The game is really nice, happy colors and controls are intuitive. As many said before me, I'd prefer more "understandable" collision boxes. And (also said before) there maybe could be a bonus if you have all the car pieces?

@ausstein WOW ! Amazing score on this run ! I want to understand the "broken highscore problem", so it could really help me if I could watch your video !
Can I share your highscore video ?

Yes you can share the video of course :)
I don't know if I'll find time today to make a video of that problem but I'll leave one here as soon as I can :)

That's an interesting idea of assembling cars on the fly.

Awesome game! Please release an Android version. Another suggestion: The different parts of the car should have different colors especially the front and back doors and seats. That would make it a lot easier to not get confused. This game should defintly an Underground or Hot Pursuit version :)

Lane changing animation would look better natural if car's nose would turn in that direction a bit. And if camera would be fixed to the car, instead of center of the road.

@kamil124b There is an Android version on Itch io, if you want to try ! And I think I will release a version on Google Play with many posts jam modifications !

I’ll make other updates soon to improve the game ! If you want to follow this game dev or my other projects, you can find me on Twitter here :

Managed to get to 8112 on my first go! Was a little hard to read the text of the car parts incoming, as well as where they were on the car, but other than that this was a fun game! It reminded me a lot of Crazt Taxi, but with nice music and cool 3D assets. It was a nice touch having the driver wave to the player in the beginning, makes it more inviting to play.

Very fun entry! The core game mechanics are very solid and allow you to avoid obstacles at the last moment, granting you a way to go through lines of obstacles if you got the right timing.

However, i found odd that when you 'collect' a part that you already have the game consider it a obstacle and you crash on it, losing a car part. I dont know if it is a bug.

In the other hand, the graphics are very neat and the sounds pleasant.

Good job on this game!

You are probably the more experienced game developer so ignore this advise if you don't think it helps you:

I think the lagg issues at around 60k are due to unity's garbage collector, since they are micro laggs that come up every few seconds. You could try to not instantiate and destroy your gameobjects, but set them active and inactive and reset their positions.
The driving inbetween lanes is probably due to small errors for every lane switch. Instead of adding to the position, you could try to find a way to set the position every time.

When I saw the picture of the main character float-driving a no-car, I knew I had to try it out.

I like the idea of assembling the car on the fly, though the penalty for collecting a repeated part can be harsh. Personally, I think it would work better if all parts were listed by name - collected highlighted, uncollected dimmed - so that I can tell which parts I've yet to collect and which parts I've already got. Aside from that it's a pretty generic endless runner, but a fun one, still.

Not much to say about the audiovisuals, except that they worked well with the game. Also, I liked the game over screen with the main character sitting on the tree - a silly conclusion to an even sillier run.

Got 15k on my second run. Not getting anywhere near the 60k scores others reported here... ^^'

Overall, an entry that is just as fun as it is funny. Good job.

Not bad. It is a nice idea indeed. The music track should have been a little bit longer, the car parts were a bit hard to see and I had to get really close to identifying them. That's all really. Great idea.

You should have a separate link for your post-jam modified game. Right now you just have the one link which points to a new version with the checklist, which was not in the version I played last week.

I played the new version with the checklist, and I've found the gameplay to be more focused in general, and it was nice when I reached that Zen state when I have all the car parts and all I need is to dodge. So I think this worked out for me. ^^

(the final score I got on this playthrough was 58606, by the way)

The new update felt very neat.
Generally it felt a bit easier. Chrome version and the lags arround 60k are fixed, good job, but the car drifting to the right is not.
from~100k on, it drifted a full lane to the right so that I could avoid all obstacles by dring right of the rightmost lane (see video). I can basically farm endless highscore. So Highscores are useless over 100k.
I recorded 200k points for the lols

That was fun! I was really confused why some parts, when collected hit me instead of getting collected. At first I thought parts were spawning in the same place as obstacles(which did happen at times) but then I went through the comments and realized that you can't collect the same part twice, hahaha.

Really nice game. Good idea in general, graphics are pretty good for a ludum dare, the mechanics are well made and it is in general fun -and quite challenging-. This game doesn't need anything to "fix", so to say, but I can only talk about improvements -like more sound variety, animations, and player feedback with the right amount of humor-. Given that that's only a matter of time: bravo.

I thought the polygon graphics were nice, and the music helped the silly nature of the game. The arcade gameplay was simple and easy to understand, and a little fun, too. That said, given the jam version doesn't speed up more over time, it was pretty clear to me there was only one way the game would increase in difficulty: throw more elements to crash into. As such, it was pretty frustrating to end up in situations where super-human reflexes were necessary to get further into the game later on. This is, admittedly, a problem with the genre itself, and a bit of a pet-peeve of mine, but I would like to see some measures to at least give the player an illusion that with more practice, they could feel they can further into the game at certain points.

Wow, the idea of the game is very similar to my concept! My idea is also based on the fact that you start with an empty car and you can collect new parts, which are armor!

@t-bo did you figure out the drifting to the right problem?
Btw it also happens if you do not change lanes at all, so the swapping lanes is not the issue of that bug.

Not a bad little game. It's kinda hard to play because it's difficult to see what car parts are coming next. Maybe once you've got the car part it should only generate the stuff your missing.

Fun and challenging - Some sort of nitro/boost ability would be cool, probably with the ability to go through objects while you're boosting (could last a couple of seconds). Also maybe an outline on the text on the side of the road to make reading it easier. I like the build your car as you go mechanic - very unique. An indicator for the parts you don't currently have (green text maybe?) would be good.

Here's my high score :race_car:

A simple game that works pretty well for mobile I imagine. Some of the sound effects got a bit old after a while but it's not a big deal. It also took me a while to figure out that getting an item you already had would damage you as well, so I was stuck for a while due to that. Interesting game, I like how you used the theme here!

I see that you've made a really great job integrating feedback from comments. Thanks to that, I had practically no issues and managed to completely enjoy the game, thanks to the details like checklist, A/D, names of parts, restart... :) This is a perfect example of a simple clever design which a 3-day jam is supposed to manage!

I've managed to find three small issues though... As some people mentioned, there seem to be some performance issues. This also includes a horizontal screen tearing, as small black lines sometimes appear. Also I believe that your algorithm doesn't prevent spawning obstacles which cannot be avoided - but this RNG issue may well reasonably be a part of your design. Also I feel that it's anticlimatic how nothing happens when we assemble a full car - there is some post-LD potential to make it about something more than just chasing inifnite score :) By the way, I've really enjoyed the cow and waving from the tree on the respawn screen, that was a vital part of the experience worthy 5/5 :P
