Rolly and the Flower by Rolly

[raw]
made by Rolly for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Rolly the Robot fell in love with a beautiful flower.

RollyInLove.png

He would like to bring her to his garden and take care of her for eternity. But even if it's safe for a robot, the path that leads there is full of danger for such a fragile creature.

Take good care of her!

Keys

  • A - D (or Q - D on AZERTY keyboards) to move left and right.
  • Space bar to throw the flower if you are carrying her.
  • R to restart a level
  • U to show / hide audio settings

The game was designed for 16:10 screens. The window in the browser has this ratio and will give more comfort if not set to full-screen.

Changelog

I provide a link to the original version, as it was published before the deadline ; and a link to a fixed version. This fixed version is exactly the same as the original except for: - Fixed a bug with buttons not being reset when rolly is on it and the level restarted. - Changed a bit of level 9 to give more time to leave the platform. - Changed the interaction area of the wrench to catch the flower more easily.

Good luck, have fun, keep it alive!

THe art style immediately caught my eye, let's see

Is the flower.. your voice?...

Yay I beat lv6!

Love the dying flavor texts

You're not gonna like this but I beat lv8 via bug. It's the only way to get past...

I'm at lv10. Wait so it's not a but? It's a game mechanic? That's a little weird

I beat the game. Okay honestly this was really good. The physics was flawless, level design were really clever for each step. The game didn't pause upon my death and that made for some interesting bugs which I'm not sure if you intended it. Congrats on making a full working fun game.

This game is excellent! The level of polish is really impressive, and the gameplay is legitimately engaging. Very well done!

Wow this game is an amazing take on the idea. I love the concept of throwing the flower to get to certain areas and quickly running back to catch the flower so it won't die. This is an amazing submission. This would make a pretty good post LD game.

Super fun game! Physics were GREAT, I really liked the different elements in level design and how it felt like you kept learning new mechanics. There were some puzzle elements which made the levels feel fresh and encouraged you to keep playing, and somehow you managed to give the Flower a personality and I actually cared about keeping it alive.

Loved it!!

It's a great one. Starts easy, but then all level increases just as much as needed. Neat. Love the audio, the simple graphics and the mechanics as well, great job!

Great game! It's a very fresh and interesting take on the theme :)

The game as a whole feels very cohesive, and the ramp up in difficulty was pretty spot on. I did get stuck a little bit on the third level because I kept trying to throw the plant over the super high blocks when you're supposed to just walk under it xD That's just my own stupidity though...

In terms of the physics, I feel like it could be a little bit more forgiving - I had trouble lining up the landing with where the flower was going to fall because the collision it's looking for is quite narrow.

I also really loved the sound design - the music fit the mood of the game perfectly. The sound effects were also really cute, it did make me feel really bad whenever I dropped the flower though.

The animation on the character and the flower were nicely done - simple but to the point. If you put in some art for the level it would help give the game a lot more direction.

Overall I had a lot of fun playing this game, great work! :)

Fantastic job! The puzzles kept me going - and not at a discouraging rate too - they were just the right amount of difficulty. I REALLY enjoyed that you spent time on the end scene! The music was calming, and the flower sounds were spot on to keep things fun :). Even the playtime length for a jam was EXCELLENT!

The game is very polished - it is hard to come up with anything that NEEDS to be done to it. Even the graphics were great being plain. I guess just better animation detail?

Really nice aesthetics, I like how you got the simple graphics working so well. The animations and sounds of the flower are great. Almost lost my mind on level 10, but otherwise it was quite manageable. Bonus points for the ending scene!

Now this was simply a delight to play. I love your game concept. Having to carry and protect an otherwise doomed companion, its great. You've executed the carrying and throwing of the flower perfectly. The music and sound effects also got me right into the whimsical mood.

I did find the level 10s timing on the set of guns can be a bit tricky to navigate on a first go and required a few tries. You can also get rolly stuck in a few places in level 10 and 11 but hey its a Jam!

Thank you so much for letting us play!

So cute game ! It's a beautiful game ! Thank you for this moment !

There are few bugs (collision between the crab and the flower make the flower die oO, and the move of the crab may be random when the flower collide)

Good job for your game ! It's a real poem ! (and the Flower voice is so bewitching )
I hope you will make a "Rolly and the Flower II" !

Wow. Beautiful, fun, simple, innovative, the kind of game that really makes you think 'why didn't I make this'??. It had me captivated the whole time, and the ending cutscene was adorable. Sounds and looks amazing - 5/5, give yourself a pat on the back.

Hello @twowolf , thanks for your feedback ! I will try to fix the button bug, since it can make the game a lot easier; Let me assure you that all levels can be completed on the first attempt. :)

Yes, all the sound effects actually come out from my mouth  that's always a lot of fun to do that part.

I made it to the end, that's really good !
Physics and controls are great, the sound is great, and there is quite a lot of content.

A little thing : some levels end up being more or less randoms, I took some elevators while praying nothing would hit me instead or figuring out the patern, because figuring out when to go is not clear enough imo.

Good use of level design to introduce mechanics. Hilarious flower audio. Quite decent music for 48h. Adding some texture to the level surfaces would really make it pop.

Interesting mechanic, playing catch while navigating a platformer level! Some more work on the background art would've helped a lot but the art that's there is nice. I would reset the platforms when the player restarts so they are always on the same cycle. The way it is I had to wait for a long while on some levels before I could attempt them again...

Love the audio and animation! The gray tiles need some more detail, and some of the moving platforms feel unnecessary, like at level 11 forcing you to wait. Overall this is a great!

@Rolly this was really fun and interesting, i liked the unusual approach to platforming and i think this is something you should explore further!

Here is som feedback in unordered order, mostly some small ideas:

1. I loved the soil conveyor-belts and the particles at the end, it would be very cool if the plant itself would follow the particle path on the high conveyor belts more precisely, so that you can place the rolly directly at the correct spot (the plant falls differently at the moment, probably because of more weight?) This works very well with the lower conveyor belts, that's why it caught my eye. I know this is a small detail but it would make it feel even more polished in that regard ;)
2. I dont' know why but i am thinking of some sort of portal mechanics in addition to the ones in the game right now ;)
3. Loved the sound the plant makes, really cute idea, the sigh and wheee! This is very satisfying while playing.
4. I am super interested to see where you might go with the environment or level-graphics in case you continue working on this!
5. I would overthink the choice of music, it seems a bit too simple and repeating to me, maybe you can find something a little bit more atmospheric? For the short time in a jam i really think it's awesome to have sounds and music at all, we didn't even find time for that at all, so chapeau!
6. Taking the mechanics further, it would be awesome to switch sizes of the plant through special machines, or have things which only the plant can "do", e.g. pressure plates/hatch doors under some soil for example which open after being pressed, so the plant falls down again where you can catch it and something else was openend or activated.
7. I love the idea of having a small "helpless" companion which you have to care for and move carefully. This makes your game very unique and fits perfectly tio the jam theme. I would however make the plant keep more momentum of the Rolly's forward or backward movement direction, so that you can drive and catch the plant without having to stop - this might give more "flow" to the movement. In addition, maybe it is possible to make the plant's collider a bit smaller, so that the collision with walls and obstycles i a bit more precise, now and then my plant died without really haveing hit a wall.

I don't want to sound overly critical, just trying to give constructive feedback, as i really like the game and its approach!

Kudos for making this alone!
