About the Game

Trelet is a puzzle-platformer in which you place letters onto others to form new words which act as platforms on your way to the goal.

It was made for the Compo using these Tools:
- LÖVE as the game's framework - LMMS and Bosca Ceoil for music - BFXR for sound effects - The Lua libraries bump.lua, classic.lua, easing.lua, and lovebird.lua

Some Hints

  • You can enter Edit Mode mid-jump
  • There are a lot of short words
  • Long words (5+ letters) give you extra letters

How to Play

In Trelet, your goal is to reach the flag at the end of the level (yes, there's only one level, I didn't have enough time for more!) You do so by placing letters onto others to create new words that act as platforms to pave your way forward.

Keep in mind that only real words will work, and that all neighboring letters (read top-to-bottom or left-to-right) need to form ones!

Can you collect all nine Star Coins?

Controls

Jump - W, space, or the Up Arrow
Reset - R
Edit Mode - Enter

I love the concept! However I think the punishment for failure is a little to big. Maybe if there were several short levels instead of one?

Thank you for the Feedback, @notexplosive!

I honestly didn't give too much thought to the punishment. I guess I didn't feel like the game was *that* hard, so I thought it was fine...

I originally planned to have a bigger level with reasons to return to previous portions as well as checkpoints, but I didn't get to that part!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to comment!

Clever idea! I included it in my Ludum Dare 45 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/-U44UyPCEiM

@jupiter-hadley Thank you! I'm taking a mental note to actually include an in-game tutorial next time. I felt like the concept was simple enough to just 'get' like that, but I see now that I need to communicate the details of how mechanics work a lot better (or at all)!

I'll get some friends to test the game next time! Sorry I gave you a hard time like that!

Struggled to work out how to play initially (didn't realize you could use the mouse) but I really like this - cool graphics, nice music, and a lovely concept.

Mac version doesn't work. Trelet_macOS.zip is unzipped to reveal Trelet_macOS.zip.cpgz, which in turn unzips to Trelet_macOS.zip... and so on...

I'll check back later in case it's fixed.

@shaolin-dave I feared something like this would happen, since I don't have a Mac to actually try it...

I'll see if I can fix it later today. Sorry for having wasted your time!

Not a problem. I might be able to help you with you Mac build if you’d like?

I agree with the others, it's not that intuitive at first glance an also a tad punitive! I had a really good run until... I failed the jump while I was going to the marketplace ;_;

I also feel it would be easier to make words if we had all the letters displayed on screen.

But appart from that, what an amazing game! Very clever system, and great art as well! My favorite so far! :)

this is a really cool concept

(1) it's a real hassle to have to press the up and down buttons to select the letter. it'd be easier if i could hold it down to continue selecting or select it with my mouse.

(2) it would be handy to be able to see further ahead

(3) i felt like i never had enough letters to continue. and it felt like making longer words really wasn't worth it.

(4) i think it's a cool concept but the first level needs to be shorter or just accept that it's going to be an open-world kind of game

(5) it felt like it wasn't worth it trying to build up back to the wizard guy, who gives you hardly anything for all the words it took to get back to him

(6) an in-game tutorial would be nice

(7) this is basically Scrabble: The 2D Platformer, and it's awesome!

Pretty hard game even after you understand the mechanics, but very satisfying once you get it.

This is a cool idea, but the game pace is a little bit slow because you have to stop all the time to create bridges for your character. Also as everyone else said, it's very punitive to die. With the right balance, this could make a very cool game.

Wow, that was a lot of comments, so thanks for all the feedback!

@shieldgenerator7:
Regarding (1), you could also use the mouse wheel, although that's still not a *great* solution.
As for (3), the amount of extra letters you get for making longer words actually scales pretty steeply - you get (n-4)² letters where n is the length of the word. So making, for example, an 8 letter word would get you a whole 16 letters, which is pretty good, I think.

But yeah, I agree with all of your points! I wanted to make the level larger and more open but that would've required me to change some other things and I just ran out of time...

@shaolin-dave: If you have any ideas that could help me that'd be cool! I really know nothing about Macs, so I just tried following the tutorial in the LÖVE wiki...

Everything [looks alright](http://puu.sh/EqdPK/5604330462.png) on my end, I think?

nice choice of colors ... the animation on the main char is very fluid too

I loved the game! Really simplicity is a very "dangerous" weapon. Challenging, fun and well done.
There is a small bug here. The character when not moving is crouching making a very annoying noise.
Great game. Congratulations!

This is our game if you want to try:

I would say, really smooth game with an innovative approach. I saw one LD submission with creating platforms/levels and I really like how it fit the theme - you did a great job in that case too! It is a difficult game, though I would say it's a great challenge ;)

I enjoyed this game a lot. The simple, yet well executed art style is visually pleasing, and the game mechanics are a very interesting take on scrabble. The punishments for small mistakes is a bit much, but I see that you've already responded to that issue elsewhere. Great game!

The player character is so adorable. I like the game mechanics, even though I'm really bad in a jump game ;)

Finished it. Last bit was quite challenging , I mean I had to think wisely. Amazing game. Since it's a jam game and people don't spend a lot of time playing all the games, you could help the players more on the way. It wasn't the case for me. But that's what I learned jamming so far. Thank again for the great game! :)

Visuals are awesome! Also the concept great but too hard to play for me for some reason...

Interesting concept, but the controls do feel a bit clunky. I wonder if clicking a tile, and then typing the letter via keyboard would have felt better? As some other folks have mentioned, having the death be a bit more forgiving would have been nice too. Other than that though it's pretty solid!
